This is not to say that the dark shadow, which lays waste to everything that comes before its glowing fire is beyond redemption. At the edge of destruction, amongst the ashes, there is always a new beginning. From a force seen only to destroy, seeds of life will emerge, encouraged by the hot sulphurous springs that ascend through scorched and blackened earth. Only the most hardy souls know the benefits that a volcano can bring. Time, the great healer, can never restore life as it existed before but, helped by the sun, ice, the wind and the waves, it will gently break down hard, unforgiving rock into rich and fertile soil. Fear may linger, but against this must be balanced faith and hope. If these are lost, death will follow, for the very source of life is gone forever.

Although I have spent hundreds of hours teaching English to students of all ages, nationalities and cultures and know that I can do this job, it has never been my ambition to be a general classroom teacher in a private English language school.
After 30 years of working with land and buildings, as a geologist, stone cutter, surveyor, building restoration contractor and consultant, I feel much more comfortable with the idea of sharing the benefit of my experience with professionals and businessmen, who work in these sectors and need help in communicating their ideas or marketing their products, using the best possible English.
Having laid down the foundations of an extremely successful business, I have a thorough appreciation of administrative and financial matters and I am particularly experienced in producing high quality publicity material.

Although the spectacular natural landscapes themselves are enough to attract international tourists to these places, the Geoparks emphasise the relationships between the geological resources and the cultural development that gives each of these areas its own distinctive character. From the siting of ancient settlements, which perch on easily defended hill top positions, to the exploitation of minerals and building stone, the two are inextricably linked.
For the moment, my eyes are on the Geoparks of Sicily, not least because I am developing contacts with producers of “tavoli di pietra lavica ceramizzata” – another instance of geology being intertwined with art and design.

Here is a continuation of my last Blog:
Having taught Spanish students at summer school, here in England, for the past few years, my attention has been turned to Spain and the Spanish language. With my last two short holidays being to Barcelona and Madrid, I have had a great insight into the fantastic scenery, architecture, art and culture of Spain, but it is thoughts of Italy that come back to me time and time again.
With all of the rising unemployment and economic troubles that have been spreading through Europe in recent years, I know that this may be an impossible task, but I want to find the way to turn a dream into practical reality.
So many well qualified professional people in Italy are looking for the very limited number of jobs that are available – especially in my field of expertise - and many of them are leaving Italy in droves. Even if I was fluent in Italian, I know that I would be at the back of that queue.
That said, thousands upon thousands of English speaking tourists visit Italy every year and they really want to appreciate the spectacular natural landscapes that Italy has to offer, yet the published tourist information that is available to them is really so bad.
Etna, the Coliseum, Pompeii and so many other similar attractions are already well known to millions around the world, but has anyone really thought that just about every one of them possesses a common denominator – they are made of stone!!!
Italy and I share this passion and my unique selling point is that I can fluently speak the language of stone.

Tag: English language Back in 2004, I was fortunate to work for the Geological Survey of Ireland for 7 months, which gave me the opportunity to see some of Ireland's wonderful natural landscapes and make use of all my skills as a geologist, photographer and writer. More than anything else, it made me realise that there was much more to life than the old and dying industrial town in the north of England where I have been living for far too long and it put a smile back on my face. The main reason for this was that for 4 months I shared an apartment block with many Italians and Spanish who had come to Dublin to learn English. As the only native English speaker, I was asked so many questions about the English language that I simply could not answer. I tried to help where I could and it gave me an idea that perhaps this is what I should be doing in life. Having since obtained an internationally recognised English teaching qualification, the big question now is........should I be doing this in Spain or Italy? To be continued......

On this occasion, friends in high places definitely paved the way for me to take advantage of the sculpture symposium - which the market town of Fanano, set high in the Italian Apennines, hosts regularly. The script from Planes, Trains and Automobiles could even have been based on my adventure. Fortunately, it ended with a full stomach, a first prize-winning photo and a meeting with similarly-minded friends, which I will remember for the rest of my life.

Tag: sicilia You may be wondering why an Englishman is writing a blog here on Libero. I first visited Italy over 30 years ago, as a geology undergraduate on a field trip to Sicily. It was the first time that I had been abroad since being a small child and my first experience of southern Europe. Staying and eating in a hotel in Cefalu, and spending most of the days surveying the rocks in the mountains behind or being whisked to such exotic places as Mt. Etna and Vulcano on day trips, I didn't have any time to really appreciate the place, but it has left me with some fantastic memories. Even at Easter time, it was hotter than anywhere that I had experienced before.....I saw snakes in the wild, ate artichokes for the first time.....grilled together with beef steaks and garlic and washed down with the local red wine....and tasted the best oranges that I have ever eaten. I also developed a love of the language, which seemed so musical to my ears. Until the next time..........

Ciao a tutti...Mi chiamo Scott Engering e io non parlo bene l'italiano. Ho studiato la lingua formalmente molti anni fa e ho dimenticato molte parole. Ho visitato Italia sette volte..... Sicilia, Verona, gli Appennini Modenese e le Isole Eolie. E 'più di 15 anni dall'ultima volta che ho visitato l'Italia. Sono sicuro che molte cose sono cambiate. Tuttavia, vorrei fare di connessione nuove. Scusi...devo scrivere in inglese! A presto. Scott

Rilevamenti di Siti Geologici Regionali di Rilievo (RIGS) presso Rotherham, Barnsley e Doncaster, per essere inclusi nel Piano Regolatore locale (UDP). Valutazione del valore scientifico, didattico ed attrattivo di 250 siti. Rilevamento dettagliato di Anston Stones Wood SSSI al fine di individuare aree per gite d’istruzione e realizzazione del percorso geologico di Anston Stones Wood per il comune di Anston.
Ente del Parco Nazionale del Peak District Rilevamento di 150 siti geologici regionali significativi ufficiali con relativo resoconto sul valore conservativo, didattico e turistico. Ente di Tutela del Patrimonio Culturale Nazionale d’Inghilterra Oltre 500 fotografie accompagnate da didascalie utilizzate per illustrare fiere campionarie, pannelli espositivi, brochure, opuscoli, materiale tecnico, didattico e di diffusione informativa.
1° Premio al Concorso Fotografico collegato al convegno internazionale sulla Scultura in Pietra, Fanano, Italia. Secondo posto al concorso fotografico pubblico Du Noyer riguardante il Rilevamento Geologico dell’Irlanda.
