Reach Castel del Monte from the A16 motorway Bari-Canosa, exit Barletta-Andria, then along the main road 170 for about 18 km.
From the South, if you prefer to enter the A14 from Bari, exit immediately to Corato (SP238) otherwise from the ring road of Bari take the SP231 inizially following the directions for Modugno-Bitonto-Terlizzi. Approaching the site, the castle view is spectacular dominating, from its 540 meters above sea level, a wide area of Puglia and Basilicata.

The castle is built directly on bedrock outcrops, and is famous for its octagonal shape. 8 are the octagonal towers and the courtyard. It is rich in color contrasts because of the use of coral rubble, limestone and marble, in the past there were many sculptures and bas-reliefs but only the plate depicting the procession of knights and a fragment of an anthropomorphic figure remain. The rest was looted, including the marble of the walls. Currently there are still two anthropomorphic shelves in the Tower of the falconer, that support the telamons umbrella vault of one of the towers scalar and a fragment of the mosaic floor room.
The sixteen rooms, eight on each floor, have a trapezoidal shape and were covered with an ingenious solution. The space is divided, in fact, in a central span covered square cross ribbed, (with semi-coral rubble on the ground floor and pillars of marble in the upper trefoil), while the remaining areas are covered by a triangular pointed barrel vaults.
The cornerstones of the cruise are each individually decorated by elements of anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and phytomorphic, probably to help you to orientate in these halls, connected in a complex way, otherwise leading to lose your way. The connection between the two plans is via three spiral staircases inserted in as many towers.
Some of these towers host cisterns to collect rainwater, in part conveyed to the tankers dug into the rock below the central courtyard. In other towers, however, are located bathrooms with toilet and wash basin, dressing and / or spaces for large tanks for ablutions. These bathrooms are exceptional in Europe at those times since the care of the body was practiced by Frederick II and his court, according to “foreign” custom typical of the Arab world, much loved by the king.
In Castel del Monte everything has been included in a logical and rational scheme, in fact in the thirteenth century, coded messages are transmitted through architecture. The construction of Castel del Monte hides many secrets, but the only message visible to all is passed to the geometry of its forms.

The octagonal shape is the symbol of resurrection. There are many religious temples where there is a square surmounted by a spherical shape, the earth and the sky, the land given by the square and the sky as the circular shape. The form of  the octagon often arises between these 2 figures because the dome is not based directly on a square base but on the octagonal shape. In fact, the square symbolizes the earth, the man the octagon, the circle of the sky.
In Castel del Monte: 8 flowers on the right frame of shamrocks on the portal tympanum, 8 shamrocks flowers on the left frame of the eardrum on the portal, 8 shamrocks flowers on the lower frame on the entrance, 8 leaves on the capitals of the columns, 8 leaves on the keystone, 8 petals to the flower of the keystone, 8 vine leaves on the keystone of the first room on the ground floor, 8 leaves of sunflower on the keystone of the fourth room, 8 and 8 leaves petals on the keystone of the fifth room, 8 acanthus leaves on the keystone of the eighth room, 8 fig leaves on the keystone of the eighth on the first floor of the hall, the number 8 repeated in every detail of its architecture is present in infinite detail in Castel del Monte.
The structure does not conform to any classic use of fortifications built in that, as in others, periods. Enlightening, however, is the description of the castle given to me by the guide associated with the "Pro Loco". She has shown to me many details that seem to indicate clearly the castle as a place of study, and perhaps for the transmission of knowledge. Actually like a modern University.
This is a site of exceptional interest, well worth visiting. However, let me suggest to settle in Andria, Trani or Alberobello since the Castle is very isolated.
You can have a lunch or dinner at the foot of the Castle only in Taverna Sforza. It's a nice place but do not expect an exceptional value for money. My assessment is moderately positive, but perhaps because enchanted by the place.

My tour operator Duemari recently organized itineraries that included this attraction.
Thanks to UNESCO since 1996, this site is not only Apulia and Italy but world heritage.
