CITTA' DEL VATICANO (Reuters) - Papa Benedetto XVI è stato lodato dai conservatori per aver tentato di riaffermare l'identit cattolica tradizionale, mentre i liberali lo hanno accusato di aver portato indietro il tempo sulle riforme e di aver danneggiato il dialogo con ebrei, musulmani e altri cristiani.
Il Pontefice 85enne ha annunciato oggi di voler lasciare l'incarico alla fine del mese a causa dell'et avanzata, che non gli consente di svolgere appieno il proprio ministero.
E' stata una decisione che ha scioccato gli ecclesiastici e i fedeli in tutto il mondo, ma che gi non aveva escluso in passato.
Benedetto XVI ha sempre goduto di discreta salute, ma i primi segnali che questa si stesse incrinando sono arrivati nell'ottobre 2011, quando ha iniziato ad usare una piattaforma mobile per spostarsi all'interno della navata principale della basilica di San Pietro.
In un libro del 2010, aveva detto che non avrebbe esitato a diventare il primo pontefice a dimettersi in oltre 700 anni, se non si fosse sentito in grado "fisicamente, psicologicamente e spiritualmente" di guidare la Chiesa cattolica.
Prima di essere eletto Papa, l'ex-cardinale Joseph Ratzinger era conosciuto come il "Rottweiler di Dio" per le sue posizioni severe sulle questioni teologiche.
INCHIESTE SUGLI ABUSI
Gli scandali per gli abusi sui minori hanno perseguitato buona pare del suo papato. Benedetto ha ordinato un'inchiesta ufficiale sugli abusi in Irlanda, che ha portato alle dimissioni di diversi vescovi. Le relazioni del Vaticano con l'Irlanda sono però peggiorate durante il suo mandato, al punto che Dublino ha chiuso la sua ambasciata presso la Santa Sede nel 2011.
Le vittime hanno chiesto che venisse indagato dalla Corte penale internazionale, ma il Vaticano ha sostenuto che non potesse essere ritenuto responsabile per i crimini di altri.
Un altro scandalo ha colpito il Vaticano nel 2012, quando si è scoperto che il maggiordomo del Papa era la fonte di documenti diffusi alla stampa in cui si parlava di presunta corruzione nella gestione degli affari vaticani.
PASSATO TEDESCO
Primo Papa tedesco dopo mille anni, Benedetto XVI si è confrontato con il passato del suo Paese quando ha visitato il campo nazista ad Auschwitz.
Definendosi "figlio della Germania", ha pregato e chiesto perché Dio è rimasto in silenzio quando un milione e mezzo di persone, per la maggior parte ebrei, sono morte durante la Seconda guerra mondiale.
Ratzinger ha fatto parte della gioventù hitleriana durante la seconda guerra mondiale, quando l'adesione era obbligatoria, ma non è mai stato membro del partito nazista e la sua famiglia si è opposta al regime di Hitler.
Il suo viaggio in Germania ha però rappresentato la prima grossa crisi del suo pontificato, quando in una lettura all'universit citò un imperatore bizantino del 14esimo secolo, dicendo che l'Islam aveva portato solo il male nel mondo e che si era diffuso con la spada.
Dopo le proteste, che compresero attacchi contro le chiese in Medio Oriente e l'omicidio di una suora in Somalia, Ratzinger disse di essere dispiaciuto per il frantedimento causato dal suo discorso.
In una mossa ritenuta conciliatoria, Benedetto fece un viaggio storico in Turchia nel 2006, pregando nella Moschea blu di Istanbul con il grand muftì.
Mesi più tardi, l'ex-presidente iraniano Mohammad Khatami incontrò il Pontefice e disse che le ferite tra cristiani e musulmani erano ancora "molto profonde" a causa del discorso di Regensburg.
Nel 2007 Benedetto nominò un vescovo polacco, che più tardi si dimise quando si seppe che era stato una spia della polizia comunista.
Benedetto fece anche un viaggio di successo nel 2008 negli Usa, nel corso del quale si è scusato per lo scandalo degli abusi sessuali, ha promesso l'allontamento dei preti pedofili e ha confortato le vittime degli abusi.
Il 2009 fu invece un annus horribilis per il Papa, che fece un passo falso dietro l'altro.
Il mondo ebraico si sentì oltraggiato dopo che Benedetto tolse la scomunica a quattro vescovi, uno dei quali negava apertamente l'Olocausto.
Fu criticato anche quando disse ai giornalisti su un aereo che lo portava in Africa che l'uso del preservativo nella lotta all'Aids peggiorava solo le cose.
NOMINE CONTROVERSE
In Vaticano, Ratzinger ha preferito designare solo uomini di cui si fidava ciecamente e alcune delle sue prime nomine furono controverse.
Scelse il cardinale Tarcisio Bertone, che aveva lavorato con lui per anni, come segretario di Stato, anche se non aveva esperienze in diplomazia.
Benedetto si è impegnato per l'unit dei cristiani, ma le altre religioni lo hanno criticato nel 2007 quando ha approvato un documento che ha ribadito la posizione del Vaticano, secondo la quale le altre denominazioni cristiane fuori dal cattolicesimo non sono pienamente chiese di Gesù Cristo.
Ha confermato la sua visione conservatrice sulle altre religioni nel 2011, quando in un incontro interconfessionale ad Assisi non incluse la preghiera comune simultanea che si teneva da quando Giovanni Paolo II diede il via al raduno nel 1986.
Allo stesso incontro, però, Benedetto ammise "con grande vergogna" che la Cristianit ha usato la forza nella sua lunga storia e si è unito ad altri leader religiosi nel condannare la violenze e il terrorismo in nome di Dio.
Anche le relazioni con gli ebrei hanno avuto alti e bassi. Gli ebrei si sono sentiti offesi dalla sua decisione di consentire un più ampio uso della messa in latino, che include anche una preghiera per la conversione degli ebrei.
Gli ebrei si sentirono offesi anche nel 2009, quando diede nuovamente il via al processo di beatificazione di Pio XII, accusato da alcuni ebrei di aver chiuso gli occhi davanti all'Olocausto, dopo due anni di pausa di riflessione.
Ma nel 2011, Benedetto ottenne le lodi per aver personalmente esonerato gli ebrei dalle accuse di essere responsabili della morte di Cristo, ripudiando il concetto di colpa collettiva che ha danneggiato le relazioni tra cristiani ed ebrei per secoli.
Benedetto ha scritto tre encicliche: la prima, "Deus Caritas est" (Dio è amore) nel 2006, su vari concetti di amore, sia erotico che spirituale.
Quella del 2007, "Spe salvi" (Salvati dalla speranza), è una critica dell'ateismo e un appello al mondo pessimista a trovare la forza nella speranza cristiana.
Nel 2009 infine ha scritto la "Caritas in veritate", che chiede di ripensare il modo in cui è gestito il mondo dell'economia.
