Lakers hold off determined Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (AFP) – Kobe Bryant scored 19 points and Lamar Odom added 15 as the Los Angeles Lakers held off a determined Memphis challenge to post a 93-84 NBA victory.

The Grizzlies on Monday closed within two points in the fourth quarter, but the two-time defending champion Lakers capitalized on five Memphis turnovers to go on an 11-0 scoring run that gave them an 89-76 lead.

Pau Gasol scored 17 points for the Lakers, earning bragging rights over younger brother Marc, the Grizzlies' starting center who scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

Sam Young matched his career high of 22 points to lead the Grizzlies.

Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay was harried by the Lakers' Ron Artest but still scored 18 points, while Memphis' Zach Randolph managed just eight points on 2-of-14 shooting.

The Grizzlies were again without guard OJ Mayo, serving the sixth-game of a 10-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

The Grizzlies trailed by five entering the fourth quarter, but trimmed the deficit to 78-76 on a dunk by Tony Allen with seven minutes to play.

Three-pointers by Odom and Artest again stretched the Lakers' lead.

Los Angeles had begun the second half with a 10-2 scoring run, but the Grizzlies moved within two points in the third period before the Lakers responded to end the quarter with a 73-68 lead.

DisplaySearch Forecasts 200% Y/Y Growth for Tablet (Slate) PCs, to 55.7 Million Units in 2011

New Product Introductions and Announcements Expected to Drive Segmentation of the Slate PC Market

Santa Clara, Calif. (Vocus/PRWEB) February 07, 2011

Momentum behind tablet (slate) PC shipments is growing, with a Y/Y increase of nearly 200% to 55.7 million units expected in 2011, according to the DisplaySearch . Though growth rates will slow over the forecast period, the slate PC share of the overall mobile PC market, which also includes notebooks and mini-notes, will rise to nearly 35%, or 172.4 million units, by 2014. Total shipments of the mobile PC market are expected to reach 503.8 million units by 2014.

“The upcoming product announcements, introductions and demonstrations in the coming weeks will build on the tremendous momentum that the market has already seen and will lead to segmentation in the tablet (slate) PC market,” said Richard Shim, mobile computing analyst for DisplaySearch. “This segmentation translates to significant shipment growth and proliferation in the short and long term.”

Segmentation is also demonstrated by the numerous screen sizes expected to be supported by the many devices that will become available in 2011. DisplaySearch expects the categories of 7” wide, 10” standard, and 10” wide to be the dominant screen sizes used by new products in the coming years.

When Apple introduced its iPad in 2010, it once again shocked many industry observers by providing a standard (4:3) aspect ratio device, even as notebooks, monitors, and TVs were moving to wide (16:9 or 16:10) formats. The success of the iPad has sparked debates about the best display format for slates; combined with screen size, the outcome of this debate will help to define the category. A plethora of new devices purporting to be more user-friendly by the nature of their “wide” footprint (or “long” when used in the palm of one’s hand) continue to flood the supply chain.

The significant growth of slates is expected to cannibalize the mini-note and notebook mobile PC categories, but this will vary by region. Cannibalization of mini-notes and notebooks by slates is expected to be most noticeable in mature markets where PC penetration rates, meaning percentage of households that already own PCs, are highest. In emerging markets, cannibalization is expected to be negligible because PC penetration rates are relatively low as compared to mature markets. Plus, individuals tend to desire more highly configured and more capable first computing devices.

The overall result will be an increase in the mobile PC category. Mobile PC shipment growth is expected to be in the double digit range throughout the forecast period, peaking in 2011, at 30.4% Y/Y, and gradually declining to 17.7% growth in 2014.

Pistons G Hamilton says he's unsure about future

Post n°15 pubblicato il 08 Febbraio 2011 da ricohvtanjb

MILWAUKEE – Pistons guard Richard Hamilton says Saturday he has no idea why he was inactive for Detroit's 92-82 win over New Jersey the night before and doesn't know what to expect next.

Hamilton told The Associated Press that it's one of the most trying times of his career in a brief conversation before the Pistons played the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night.

Coach John Kuester said Hamilton would be active against the Bucks.

"I just found out that I was active just now," Hamilton said walking to the locker room. "Your guess is as good as mine, man."

Hamilton didn't directly address whether there had been an event that led to him being inactive even though the Pistons have been shorthanded already because of injuries.

Pistons general manager Joe Dumars declined to comment on Saturday. Kuester previously said it was an internal decision to make Hamilton inactive on Friday night.

Hamilton said he believes he'll be traded, but his contract may not be easy to move even though he's averaged 17.7 points per game over his career. Hamilton signed an extension in 2008 for about $34 million over three years that just kicked in this season, but the third year is only partially guaranteed.

"That's how you see it, that's how you look at it. It's like a rollercoaster ride to tell you the truth. You don't know what to expect," Hamilton said. "It's tough, it's hard. It's one of those things that you can't control."

Hamilton, who turns 33 on Feb. 14, is having the worst season of his 12-year career since he played sparingly as a rookie in Washington. He last played 21 1/2 minutes on Jan. 10 in a loss at Chicago.

Super Bowl: why it will move to cable

Post n°14 pubblicato il 05 Febbraio 2011 da ricohvtanjb

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Broadcast network executives will cry foul. Some NFL fans will complain. And government officials might even posture about the sad demise of free television. But it's only a matter of time before the Super Bowl leaves broadcast TV for a cable channelmost likely ESPN.

Why? It just makes economic sense for the media conglomerates that license the broadcast rights to the No. 1 TV event in America.

Rights to the Super Bowl are tied to the broadcast networks' regular-season contracts. U.S. networks CBS, Fox and NBC take turns under a scheme that keeps the games on broadcast televisionat least until the deals expire in 2014.

ABC is missing from that list because it doesn't show any NFL games, but its Disney-owned sister network ESPN airs Monday Night Football.

Ironically, ESPN pays more per year for its NFL rights package than the three broadcast networks do, though it is not part of the playoff telecasts or Super Bowl rotation.

This will likely change in the next rights negotiations, already under way. And when it changes, the floodgates could open, and the big game could begin to rotate among a mix of broadcast and cable networks, ending a long battle to keep the Super Bowl free.

In fact, in 1975, the Federal Communications Commission tried to draft a law that prevented major events such as the Super Bowl from migrating to cable, but that regulation was struck down by the courts (Australia has such a law). Since then, there have been lobbying efforts to make sure major events don't go to cable.

NBC Sports' Dick Ebersol met with the FCC and Justice Department staff in 2010 to assure them that the Comcast-NBC Universal merger would not result in the appearance of the Super Bowl or World Series on Comcast's Versus sports network. Disney, however, has made no such promise about ESPN.

Look at what has happened with other premier sports events. In 2000, the college football season concluded with 25 bowl games. Of those, 15 were televised on cable.

Flash-forward to this past season, when 31 of 35 bowl games were on cable, including the Gator, Fiesta, Orange and Roseall of which had been on broadcast TV a decade earlier. Even the BCS National Championship Game between Auburn and Oregon aired for the first time on ESPN, becoming the most-watched broadcast in the history of cable.

Similarly, CBS has agreed to share coverage of college basketball's March Madness tournament games with Turner. In 2016, the Final Four will be seen exclusively on cable, something many pundits thought would never happen.

Other leagues have followed suit: the Major League Baseball and NBA playoffs have aired on a mix of broadcast and cable channels for years. NBC has moved more of its Olympics coverage to its cable properties. In 2010, more hours of Winter Olympics content were seen on cable than on the network.

Follow the money to figure out why. Sure, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC are on more TVs than ESPNbut not by much. ESPN is available in more than 100 million homes (and growing), compared with nearly all 116 million U.S. households for its broadcast cousin ABC. But whereas ABC is restricted to the revenue it receives from advertisements, ESPN generates ad revenue and more than $4 per subscriber per month in subscription fees.

Paying extra to air a Super Bowl on ESPN would be both economically feasible for the network and could generate big returns, as NFL fans would be required to subscribe to see the big gameand ESPN could thus charge even bigger carriage fees.

Before the Super Bowl moves, we will likely see the NFL cautiously migrate a playoff game or two to cable. In 1987, ESPN started airing NFL games on Sunday nights, careful to position the new broadcast as additive, not taking away from existing NFL broadcasts.

In 2006, Monday Night Football moved from ABC to ESPN, but ESPN let Sunday Night Football move back to broadcast on NBC. The league created the NFL Network in 2003 and began broadcasting regular-season games in 2006, but they are played Thursdays to avoid migration criticism.

So when NFL playoff games move to cable, consider it a sign that the Super Bowl will soon follow. By then, maybe it will air in 3D.
