Captain Mario Ciancarella struck off by Pertini’s forged signature. Now history must be re-written

At the time of the Ustica massacre, Mario Ciancarella was a Captain in the Italian air force, as well as being the leader of the military Democratic Movement (which sprang up out of the armed forces being contaminated by social and democratic culture). Summoned to the Quirinale in 1979 and received by President Pertini, together with Sandro Marcucci and Lino TotaroMario Ciancarella had become a point of reference for the revelations from all over Italy of the ignoble deeds, both true and false, which were taking place in the military world.

In this context, even Marshal Mario Alberto Dettori, radar operator at Poggio Ballone on the night of the Ustica masscare, decided to trust and confide in him: “Captain, it was us...”, “Captain, all this rubbish about the Libian Mig....”

Mario Alberto Dettori would be found hanging in 1987. The matter was hushed quickly; the verdict that it had been suicide.

It was because of his role as leading exponent that Captain Ciancarella became so troublesome as to induce “someone very high up” to forge President Pertini’s signature on the Presidential Decree of expulsion in October 1983. A real coup d’état. A copy of the expulsion decree would be delivered to him, upon his request, only 9 years later and after Pertini’s death.

The Associazione Antimafie „Rita Atria“, has proudly stood by Mario Ciancarella for 22 years (since its foundation) without ever taking so much as one step back, despite everything and all, at times excessive, advice.

Today, the Civil Court of Florence has confirmed the doubts surrounding Ciancarella (and ours, too): President Pertini’s signature that appears on that decree is an indecent forgery. This much has been verified by two expert reports – one undertaken by the party involved and one ordered by the Magistrate – which were able to point out both how clear the forgery is as much as the total approximation with which it was done.

The Associazione Antimafie „Rita Atria“ – of which Ciancarella is a founding member – and Mario Ciancarella himself,  are calling a press conference on 22nd October at 10.30 in Lucca, in Viale Regina Margherita 113 at the bookshop „LuccaLibri Il Caffe' Letterario“, in order to document what has occurred, question the reasons that could have prompted such destruction of the law and point out the political and giudicial consequences of the recent pronouncement by the Civil Court of Florence.

Clearly, we can disclose that many will have to read the story of Captain Mario Ciancarella again, because being struck off like that not only destroyed the life of an honest man and a respectable family, but was useful to politics and more besides.

We also wish to communicate that the Association’s and Lorenzini family’s lawyer has questioned Captain Ciancarella, registering the transcript with the Public Prosecution’s office at Massa where, petitioned by us, an investigation has been reopened to throw light on the death of former Lieutenenat Colonel of the Italian air force, Alessandro Marcucci. He died on 2nd February 1992 while in command of a Piper on a fire-sighting mission for the Tuscan Region. In 1992 the investigation came to the conclusion that it had been an “accident”. We are not of the same opinion.

The Dettori family, informed of the facts, have stated that their thoughts and comments will be made known on the day of the press conference.
