Macao groups can re-enter the country via Hung Chin from May 6th

From May 6, a number of visa policy relaxations will be implemented for mainlanders who want to visit Macau.

On Sunday, Macau’s government intelligence service said in a press release in Portuguese and Chinese that individuals from mainland China may have several participants between Macau and Hung-chien to participate in the “Macao-Hung-chin tour group.”

In addition, residents of 20 large Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, can now apply for a Macau or Hong Kong visa entirely online without having to visit China’s public security office.

Another move allows mainland residents seeking business visas for Macau or Hong Kong to apply at any immigration office across China. Those seeking business visas for multiple trips during the designated period will now be able to obtain them electronically. That followed an announcement Sunday by China’s national immigration office that outlined all relaxed visa protocols.

The group tour members will be able to travel to Hungchin and Macau multiple times within seven days through the Hungchin Port arrivals hall (pictured, center). This will be the basis for the entire group to travel together each time, and inside and out.

Earlier this year, the Macau government mentioned the idea of multiple entry visas between Macau and the island of Hung-chien (the mainland territory next door).

It has been described as a possible way to expand the presence of mainland tourists per trip in Macau by allowing such visitors to sleep overnight in a cheaper, messy hotel room.

Macau’s government said on Sunday that the Chinese national immigration agency’s announcement on Hung Chin’s multi-entry into Macau was “an important step that will contribute to expanding visitors and promoting the integrated development of Macau and Hung Chin.”

Macau’s statement said the Macau government’s tourism agency will “communicate with local travel agencies to ensure the orderly implementation of the measures and cooperate in the implementation of the measures to carry out relevant public relations work.”

Other measures announced by the national immigration agency on Sunday included that mainland residents traveling to Macau to participate in exhibitions, medical appointments or performances could apply to visit Macau multiple times a year via a visa labeled “other.”

Those applying for a medical appointment in Macau may have up to two companions sign up for the same type of visa.

Macau promised to develop medical tourism as part of its efforts to diversify its economy. It recently opened a new medical complex on a trial basis in cooperation with leading medical institutions on the mainland.

In a note on Sunday, JPMorgan Securities described all the mitigation measures as a “surprise gift from the motherland” for Macau.
