Hundreds in various provinces trooped to their village halls Saturday to avail of free medical and dental services as well as free circumcision for boys.
In conflict-wracked Datu Saudi-Ampatuan in Maguindanao, 75 boys, ages 15 to 18, availed themselves of the free circumcision service while 75 residents received free dental services.
More than 200 patients were also given free medical consultation and medicine.
Male Muslim children are traditionally circumcised seven days after birth.
Residents of Barangay Megkawayan in Calinan, Davao City endured a two-kilometer walk to the villages covered court to take advantage of free medical check-up and circumcision.
Fifteen boys were circumcised in the area while 455 people received free medicine. Almost 100 people also availed of free dental services.
In General Santos City, more than a hundred boys were circumcised for free. Parents said circumcision in the hospitals would usually cost them P1,500 to P2,000 excluding the medicine.
One hundred sixty five boys were also given free circumcision and medicine in Camaman-an, Cagayan de Oro.
Different local government units, non-government organizations, private companies and government agencies including the military sponsored the free services.
