Extr@ English!

Post n°3 pubblicato il 17 Aprile 2013 da BritishWay

"Extr@" is a tv series for English learners. It's very funny and easy to understand. Most importantly, it's not frustrating! Compared to ordinary sitcoms, all the actors speak clearly and slowly, and it isn't hard to understand what's happening in each scene. All my students are enthusiastic about it – can you believe they prefer Extr@ to their beloved Peppa Pig?!

You can watch the first episode below – "Hector's arrival". Hector arrives from Argentina to meet Bridget, his penpal. His English is very poor, and Bridget finds it difficult to communicate with him. She's not really keen to host Hector at first, but then she changes her mind... If you enjoy "Extr@" and would like to see more, you can find the next episodes on YouTube.

TIP: Don't read the subtitles! Cover them up with a piece of paper, start watching a short part and try to figure out what the characters are saying, then watch it again with the subtitles, to read the bits you didn't understand. Eventually, go back and watch a third time, without subtitles. By now everything should be clear :)

R.I.P. Margaret Thatcher

Post n°2 pubblicato il 09 Aprile 2013 da BritishWay

Margaret Thatcher passed away yesterday at the age of 87. When she was in power I was a child and I had no interest in politics, but I would like to spend a few words to remember some important facts about her. She was the first woman to be elected Prime Minister in the UK, which is a great achievement if we think about the minor role women play in politics, in Britain as well as in other European countries. She was called the "Iron Lady" because of her strong will and determination – as a result, she was liked by many and despised by many others. It doesn't matter to me whether you are a fan of hers or not, I simply wish to recall one of her famous quotes:

“Watch your thoughts for they become words.
Watch your words for they become actions.
Watch your actions for they become habits.
Watch your habits for they become your character.
And watch your character for it becomes your destiny.
What we think, we become.
My father always said that... and I think I am fine.”

She once addressed the Conservative party to discuss the subject of taxation, stating that there is no such thing as public money. I found the speech worth of mention, and I'd like to share it with you. It should be easy enough for intermediate students to understand.
