The ATP World Tour Masters 1000 is a series of nine tennis tournaments that are part of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour, held annually throughout the year in Europe and North America. The tournaments are mandatory for the top male players on the professional circuit. The series constitutes the most prestigious tournaments in men's tennis after the four Grand Slam events.

The 25th edition of the Sony Ericsson Open is scheduled for March 25-April 5 and will once again feature the top-96 players on both ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tours competing at the Crandon Park Tennis Center for one of the most prestigious titles in tennis.

Former World No. 1 Andre Agassi holds the record for the most titles with 17.

On August 31, 2007 the atp mens tennis announced that major changes will take place in 2009. The Masters Series will be renamed to the “Masters 1000”, with the addition of the number 1000 referring to the number of ranking points earned by the winner of each tournament. Contrary to earlier plans, the number of tournaments will not be reduced from nine to eight and the Monte Carlo Masters will remain part of the series although, unlike the other events, it will not have a mandatory player commitment. The Hamburg Masters event will be downgraded to a 500 point event. The Madrid Masters will move to May and onto clay courts, and a new tournament in Shanghai will take over Madrid'

Nestor Set for Tennis Masters Cup

Serb sensation Novak Djokovic secured his first trip to the prestigious master tennis Cup—to be held at Shanghai's Qi Zhong Stadium from November 11-18—joining tennis’ 1-2 tandem of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as singles players to have clinched their place in the elite eight-man, eight-team field. Doubles veterans Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor, meanwhile, became the second team to qualify for the circuit finale and will be making their fifth straight appearance at the Tennis Masters Cup.

The Chinese promoters of Tennis Masters Cup, co-owned by the ATP, ITF, and Grand Slams, have extended their commitment for Shanghai to host the elite eight-man and eight-team tournament through 2008. Shanghai, which last year hosted the circuit finale for the first year of a three-year commitment, will now host the tournament for a minimum of four consecutive years, running into 2008.

In 2009 the masters tennis will be renamed to ATP World Tour Finals and will be staged at The O2 in London.
