A LOVE SUPREME 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

This will be an incredible night of genre-bending collaboration, as saxophonist Ravi Coltrane welcomes an all-star array of guests to honor the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. Joining Coltrane for this momentous night is trumpet virtuoso Nicholas Payton, trailblazing guitarist Adam Rogers, bass star Matthew Garrison (son of John Coltrane Quartet bassist Jimmy Garrison), and the acclaimed drummer Marcus Gilmore, grandson of jazz legend and John Coltrane collaborator Roy Haynes. For Ravi Coltrane, deciding to perform his father’s 1964 masterwork on the 50th anniversary of its recording is less an act of filial piety than that of a modern jazz master exploring one of the music’s most profound spiritual statements, one that has been greatly influential across vast musical boundaries. With a singular connection to his father’s masterpiece and a deep involvement in the cutting edge sounds of today, Ravi Coltrane has assembled this diverse range of artists inspired by A Love Supreme to celebrate their common ground on stage, pushing the legacy of Coltrane’s music into the future.ARTIST PERSONNELRavi Coltrane saxophonesNicholas Payton trumpetAdam Rogers guitarMatt Garrison electric bassMarcus Gilmore drumsSaturday, December 13 at SF Jazz Center, Miner Auditorium
