George Russell, pionnier du jazz modal, est mort lundi à Boston, à 86 ans, des suites de la maladie d'Alzheimer.Il avait débuté sa carrière à la batterie dans l'orchestre de Benny Carter, mais c'est en tant que compositeur - et théoricien du Lydian Concept en 1953 - qu'il se fit d'abord connaitre, en signant en 1947 le fameux Cubana Be / Cubana Bop popularisé par Dizzy Gillespie. Russell was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1923, and attended Ohio’s Wilberforce University (a school with an impressive list of jazz alumni), where he played drums in the Collegians, a local dance band. Attratto a Verona dalla sensazionale Big Band di David Murray rimasi invece folgorato dalla Big Band di George che con Murray divideva il palco della serata. A Perugia poi, la band suonava tutte le sere alla mezzanotte al Teatro Morlacchi. Avendo pochi giorni a disposizione avevo prenotato un solo concerto della band. La mattina successiva all'esibizione del gruppo mi precipitai alla biglietteria per permutare gli altri biglietti di mezzanotte che avevo a favore della big band di Russell. Ero consapevole che poteva essere l'ultima volta che ascoltavo dal vivo quella meravigliosa musica.
