National mens football coach Norman Fegidero is upbeat about his teams chances in the five-day Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup qualifiers that begin May 13 in Iloilo. This, despite the tough challenge a former Soviet republic is expected to pose on the hosts.

â€śThe qualifiers are very winnable. We have a good chance winning against Brunei Darussalam and Bhutan. The only hurdle will be Tajikistan,â€ť Fegidero said in a recent phone interview from Iloilo.

The Filipino booters will open their campaign in the Group B qualifiers against Brunei Darussalam on May 13 and play Bhutan on May 17.

Sandwiched in between the two relatively easy assignments is the Tajikistan game scheduled on May 15.

The Tajiks are the defending champions and, because they boast of tall players, are again heavy favorites to win.

That is why Fegidero, a former national team player who scored the goal in the Philippines 1-0 upset win over Malaysia during the 1991 Manila Southeast Asian Games, strongly considered height in putting up his roster, which includes England-based goalkeeper Neil Ethridge, Phil and James Younghusband and six-foot homegrown Ali Borromeo.

â€śWe have hired top tall players to try to counter their height disadvantage,â€ť said Fegidero.

Fegidero is also expecting the home crowd to be a factor as he is expecting throngs of football fans in Iloilo, a football hotbed, to troop the Iloilo Sports Complex and the Barotac Nuevo Football Field to cheer on the Filipinos.

Also bannering the Nationals are England-based Chris Greatwich and James Hall, and local veterans Anton del Rosario, Emelio Caligdong, collegiate stalwarts Jason Cordova and Glester Sobremisana of Far Eastern U, Ricardo Becite and Meliton Pelayo of Santo Tomas U.

The team is currently in Iloilo and has played a series of friendly matches against local squads in Dumaguete, San Carlos City and Cebu.

The Nationals also hope to play friendly matches in Macau next week before the qualifiers.

The nation that tops the group will join seeded nations North Korea, Turkmenistan, India, Myanmar, Group A champion Sri Lanka, and two more group winners in the Asian Challenge Cup, a tournament for lower-ranked Asian nations, to be held from July 30 to August 10 in India.

The Philippines tallied two draws and a loss in the 2006 edition in Bangladesh, but failed to make it into the quarterfinal round.

The Philippine Star SAN NICOLAS, Batangas â€“ This small town is a fifth-class municipality located along Taal Lake where Pansipit River runs from Balayan Bay to Taal Lake. Its immediate proximity to Taal Volcano earned it the title "gateway to Taal Volcano" and a larger area of the volcano island is made part of the town.
But although the town of San Nicolas was made into a municipality only in 1955, San Nicolas was originally the site of the old town of Taal, which was established in 1570 under Frey Agustin Albuquerque, barely 50 years after the arrival of the Spaniards in the Philippines. Hence, San Nicolas was always referred to as the Lumang Taal.
The first Taal Church was built in San Nicolas in 1575 by Frey Diego de Espinar but was destroyed in 1754 due to the eruption of Taal Volcano, which also led to the transfer of the town to its new and present site.
Through the initiative of the parish priest of San Nicolas, Fr. Glenn Cantos, the ruins of the old Taal Church in San Nicolas were again cleared and refurbished. The ruins, which were for a long time unnoticed by tourists and even by the residents, reveal a relatively big church and one of the first churches built in the Philippines by the Spaniards.
A parish heritage commission was organized to plan out activities to revive and develop the ruins and remind the residents of the old glory that the area enjoyed even before the coming of the Spaniards.
Two years ago, a team from the University of the Philippines Archaeological Studies Program, with the assistance of the Archaeology Division of the National Museum and funded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, conducted a survey and excavation of the area, and discovered artifacts, showing an advanced community even before the coming of the Spaniards and the existence of trade with other Asian countries.
Historical accounts show that Pansipit River was then the only access by water from China Sea to the other parts of Batangas through Taal Lake, and the area of San Nicolas, located at its mouth, became a center of trade.
Last March 30, the parish relived the old glory of Taal in its old site, namely San Nicolas, by putting up a cross at the altar portion of the ruins, primarily to again sanctify the place and to remind the residents of San Nicolas of the glory of its ancient past.

LOS ANGELES - Country singer Carrie Underwood is the all-time most popular "American Idol" winner, and dreadlocked Jason Castro was voted the most overrated contestant this season, according to a poll released on Monday by AOL Television.
With the most watched U.S. television show reaching its climax this week, finalists David Archuleta, 17, and David Cook, 25, are running neck and neck in terms of best performances of the seventh season, according to the poll.
Archuleta's rendering of John Lennon's "Imagine" in February was rated best of the season by 35 percent of those taking part, with Cook's rock version of the Michael Jackson hit "Billie Jean" in March also getting 35 percent.
The AOL Television poll, conducted May 9-16, received more than 1.3 million votes.
Underwood, the 2005 "American Idol" winner who went on to win Grammy, American Music, Billboard and Country Music Association awards, was voted the most popular "Idol" by 54 percent of those taking part.
Kelly Clarkson, who won the first season in 2002, was second with 26 percent of votes.
Castro, the mellow guitar-playing Texan who made it to the final four round of contestants this year, topped the list of most overrated singers of the 2008 season with 28 percent of votes. Some 35 percent rated his performance of the Bob Dylan classic "Mr. Tambourine Man," in which Castro flubbed the lyrics, the worst of the year.
An overwhelming majority -- 63 percent -- thought that contestants who had record deals in the past should not be allowed to compete on the Fox network show. The thumbs-down reflected the controversy over sixth-placed Irish singer Carly Smithson, 24, who got her second chance to make a career in the music industry after a record deal nine years ago went nowhere.
Australian Michael Johns, 29, was considered the 2008 "Idol" loser most likely to make good, despite being eliminated five weeks ago.
Some 63 percent said they had purchased contestant performances from iTunes -- the first year that music from the show has been available for download from the online service during "American Idol" broadcasts.
Archuleta and Cook will sing for the 2008 "American Idol" title and a recording contract on Tuesday. The winner will be announced in Hollywood on Wednesday.

Ronnie Alcano made short work of little-known rival Carlos Talavera, scoring an 8-1 rout of the Guatemalan in the opening round of the 2008 World 8-Ball Championship Friday at the Amir Billiards Club in Fujairah City, United Arab Emirates.
Alcano, the title holder in the rich tournament, raced to 6-0 lead before yielding one rack then stringing up the next two to advance to the next round either against Chinese Liu Haitao and local bet Omran Saleem.
Elvis Calasang was the only other Filipino bet who started his campaign here Friday. He was playing Korean Ryu Seung Woo in Group B at presstime.
Ten Filipino pool masters made the tournament proper with Jeff de Luna, Warren Kiamco and Allan Cuartero finding them drawn together in Group F.
Roberto Gomez is in Group D, Antonio Gabica in Group E, Joven Bustamante in Group G and Dennis Orcollo and Israel Rota in Group H.
De Luna opens his campaign against former World Pool champion Ralf Souquet of Germany Saturday. Cuartero is up against Ibrahim Bin Amir of Malaysia and Kiamco against Amine Ouahbi in one of the toughest groups in the tourney.
Bustamante may have to hurdle Corey Deuel in Group B, Orcollo has to contend with Oliver Ortmann in Group H and Gomez has a tough assignment in Shane Van Boening in Group D.
Alcano, looking to become the first player to defend a major title in over a decade, displayed his pool savvy early against Talavera.
The Calamba, Laguna native was so impressive, losing only one rack in an alternate-break format.
Other players in Group A are Bernard Kiat, Mohammed El Assai, Naif Al Jeweni and Jianbo Fu.
The double-elimination format is in use in the group matches with four players from each group advancing to the knockout stage.

Traders sought to import just 12,114 tons of rice into the Philippines on Friday out of 164,770 tons on offer as the government defended the price it paid in a recent rice deal with Vietnam.
The Philippines, the world's biggest rice importer, is trying to encourage more private firms to buy the grain from overseas but there is little interest due to high prices and stiff competition from the state, which sells rice at a discount.
Domestic traders have criticized the government for paying $940 a ton, including cost and freight, for 600,000 tons of rice from Hanoi in a $564 million government-to-government deal this month.
Sixty percent of the shipment was low grade 25 percent broken variety, 30 percent was 15 percent broken and the rest was 5 percent broken.
The price was far above the floor price of $800 a ton, free on board, that Vietnam has set for selling high quality 5-percent broken rice.
But Manila defended its purchase, which will be delivered during a traditional lean period in the third quarter.
"At this point, with the limited supply of rice available for sale internationally, the world market for rice remains a sellers' market," the Department of Agriculture said in a statement.
But international prices of the grain are dropping after Vietnam and Cambodia lifted shipment curbs and as Manila said it had wrapped up its purchases for 2008.
After the Philippines and Vietnam agreed their deal, Malaysia said it would put on hold talks to buy rice from Thailand, while prices fall.
International rice prices dropped 3 percent this week from last week and are down 30 percent from a peak of $1,080 a ton in April.
In the Philippines, the state's grain importing arm is expected to rack up a deficit of P43 billion this year from a shortfall of 2.6 billion last year after paying record prices and then selling the grain at a discount at home.
Unable to compete against the state, only 14 private traders joined in the bidding on Friday despite the government waiving the usual import tariff of 50 percent and offering a small rebate for early delivery.
Private traders have bought just 69,404 tons out of a total volume offered of 200,000 tons and a fraction of the 2.3 million tons that the government has bought.
There was a price cap of $1,200 per ton cost-and-freight, but the private importers would have to settle prices themselves with overseas suppliers.
