Il musical di Damien Chazelle - presentato in anteprima, in concorso e in apertura alla Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica di Venezia - ha ricevuto tutti riconoscimenti per cui era stato candidato, tra cui quelli per la miglior attrice e miglior attore andati a Emma Stone e Ryan Gosling. Moonlight di Barry Jenkins, con nel cast Janelle Monáe e Naomie Harris, è stato giudicato il miglior film di genere drammatico. Premiato anche Casey Affleck per Manchester by the Sea, con il fratello di Ben Affleck riconosciuto miglior attore protagonista di un dramma. Il corrispondente premio al femminile ha interessato Isabelle Huppert per il ruolo sostenuto in Elle.Sul versante televisivo, The Crown ha ottenuto il Golden Globe come migliore serie drammatica. Migliori attori Claire Foy per The Crown e Billy Bob Thorton per Goliath. Ad Atlanta è stato assegnato quello riferito alla commedia, con l'interprete Donald Glover premiato come miglior attore. Miglior attrice Tracee Ellis Ross per Black-ish.La cerimonia è stata presentata da Jimmy Fallon (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon) e si è svolta domenica 8 gennaio presso il Beverly Hilton Hotel di Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.
