MORE THAN 100 years ago, King Edward VII dubbed Cartier, founded in Paris in 1847, "the Jeweler to Kings, King of Jewelers." Yet for much of the 20th century, it was female royalty princesses and duchesses, as well as queens of society and the screen-who figured most prominently in the Cartier story, especially once its American chapter began, with the opening of the firm's first New York store, in 1909. To celebrate that 1oo-year anniversary, next month the jeweler will unveil "Cartier and America," an exhibition of more than 200 historic pieces at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco(December 19 April 18, 2010; centennial.cartier.com). As the show makes abundantly clear, many of the past century's most stylish women, from Daisy Fellowes to Princess Grace to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, shared a passion for Cartier along with their American background and outlook. Strong personalities and remarkable ladies of taste, the American muses were instrumental in pushing Cartier to explore new creative limits. They loved jewelry, but their connection with Cartier went beyond stones; it was about creating, wearing, collecting and treasuring meaningful, personal objects. Mrs. Morton Freeman Plant persuaded her husband to trade the Beaux-Arts mansion on Fifth Avenue that still houses Cartier's US. flagship for a two-strand pearl necklace valued at $1 million in 1917. In 1929, Barbara Hutton agreed to accompany her father on a trip to Europe only after he bought her a $50,000 Cartier ruby ring Grace Kelly made an appeal to the producers of High Society that she be allowed to wear in the film the Cartier engagement ring that Prince Rainier of Monaco had given her. First Lady Jackie Kennedy wore a Cartier Tank watch, and so does Michelle Obama (it can be seen in her official White House portrait). Some even used their treasures to make grand final gestures: the Duchess of Windsor decreed in her will that her beloved jewelry collection, which included many Cartier pieces, be sold to raise money for the Pasteur Institute, in Paris.
