The stand off between supporters of suspended Mayor Pedro Cuerpo and policemen continued Tuesday night as the mayor's loyalists held a prayer vigil in front of the Rodriguez Municipal Hall in Rizal.

The standoff has disrupted operations at the municipal hall as Cuerpo supporters barricaded the entrance of the building.

Cuerpo said he will stay holed up inside the hall while waiting for Malacañangs reply on his appeal regarding his six-month suspension from office.

"Hindi naman ako nang-aabala dito. Kung may nagamit akong kuryente at tubig later i-bill ako ng munisipyo," said Cuerpo.

He and his supporters marched to the municipal hall when he was issued another suspension order dated March 18. Cuerpo has been under 60-day preventive suspension since February 13 for illegal collection of fees from garbage trucks that were passing his municipality.

This prompted Cuerpo and his supporters to allegedly force their way to the municipal hall, past the police barricade.

The standoff prevented acting mayor Jonas Cruz from assuming his post.

Calabarzon police director Chief Superintendent Ricardo Padilla said they will wait for negotiators from the Department of Interior and Local Government to thresh things out with Cuerpo in the coming days.

“We are awaiting orders from the DILG. My men will remain in the area until such orders arrive,” said Padilla.

Elements of the DILG, local police and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan earlier served the six-month suspension order to Cuerpo on March 18 but the suspended mayor refused to accept the document. He instead told the servers to serve such order in his office at the municipal hall.

However, personnel at Cuerpos office refused to accept the same and the servers were forced to post the document on the bulletin board.

Cuerpo has blamed his political rival, Gov. Casimiro “Junjun” Ynares III, for the suspension order. With a report from the Philippine Star
