In an interview with NBC broadcast Tuesday, Ahmadinejad said the two U.S. hikers would be released "in two days."Some reports said the hikers must pay $500,000 in "bail" each before they are freed and their families are scrambling to raise the money now.Ahmadinejad told NBC that the two were being treated well in Iran."They are human beings… these two people have very good conditions here in prison, it’s like staying in a hotel," said Ahmadinejad. "Let me ask a question - are they really the problem?…The problem is in the approach of the American politicians and leaders. Why [are] the American leaders so hostile against us?"The two Americans, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, both 29, were arrested along with another American - since released - along the Iran-Iraq border two years ago. They were both sentenced to eight years in prison on charges of espionage.U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reacted positively to the news on Tuesday, telling reporters at a conference, "We are encouraged by what the Iranian government has said today, but I’m not going to comment further than that. We obviously hope we will see a positive outcome by what appears to be a decision from the Iranian government."The hikers are being held in the same cell in Tehnran’s Evin prison. They had both pled not guilty to the charges at their closed-door trial, which ended on July 31.A third hiker, Sarah Shourd - Bauer’s fiancee, was detained with the group and released after a similar $500,000 payment in September 2010. The hikers, all graduates of the University of California at Berkeley, had gone to Iraqi Kurdistan for a weeklong holiday in 2009 and accidentally crossed the border into Iran during a hike. The imminent release of the two hikers comes a week before Ahmadinejad is scheduled to speak at the UN General Assembly. He’s been engaged in a media offensive over the past two days - NBC was given unprecedented access to shadow the Iranian president for a day and aired the interview on Monday, and the Washington Post interviewed Ahmadinejad for an hour Tuesday.A spokesperson for the two Americans had previously called for their immediate release. "Shane and Josh are innocent and have never posed any threat to the Islamic Republic of Iran, its government or its people," said Samantha Topping, their spokesperson, after the two were convicted.Iran’s Foreign Affairs Minister had expressed his desire that the two would be let go, saying in August before they were convicted that he hoped "the trial of the two American defendants who were detained for the crime of illegally entering Iran will finally lead to their freedom."That the two Americans were convicted of espionage despite the Foreign Affairs Minister’s words signals a growing gap between the Iranian government and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who controls the judiciary.
