The Basics of Neodymium Rare Earth Magnets

The most powerful smco magnet ever known are Neodymium rare earth magnets. Just like a magnet on the refrigerator in your household, these are made of materials which create a magnetic field by themselves and become magnetic and hence they are known to be ferrite magnet . The word "rare" is used in the name as they require a combination of 15 different rare elements of the scandium, yttrium and lanthanides series. Magnetic field generated by these rare rubber magnet is so powerful that a large one can disrupt the working of a CT scanner, erase hard drives and de-magnetize other media which is magnetic. Also, these magnets are capable of erasing information on magnetic strips like the ones used in credit and identification cards. The first Neodymium magnet was first made in early phase of 1982 and is considered the second sort of magnet of rare earth in creation. General Motors Corporation and Sumitomo Special Metals were credited with the discovery of the compound which makes this magnet. Another type of metal magnet of rare earth was SmCo or Samarium-cobalt magnet which was quite expensive and hence could not be used in production lines efficiently. Bonded and Sintered are the two kinds of rare earth magnets which exist. The Neodymium rare earth magnets of the Sintered kind are extremely corrosive and due to that, manufacturers using this magnet for producing commercial products use nickel plating and copper or just nickel as a coating for protection. The coatings stops the magnets from corroding while being used. Sintered magnets are produced by manufacturers by using pulverized magnetic powder and sintering in liquid phase and precursor ingot. Then blocks are formed of these and cut to desired shapes applying heat and then the magnetic qualities are given. Nd2Fe14B and Nd-Fe-B are the two kinds of alloys used in bonded magnets and they are prepared using a process of melt-spinning. The process involves crushing the two alloys to microscopic particles and then polymers and mixed in them. After that the bonded magnets are left to set. Either form of the neodymium rare earth magnets are quite dangerous if the person using them is not being careful. Particularly children stand at risk as they do not have enough strength for holding them firmly. The magnet's power and the strength it exerts can be the cause of serious injury when a finger happens to get stuck between the two magnets. These types of injuries can be caused even by a neodymium magnet which is only one centimeter long. Also when two such magnets happen to come close to each other, the force is so tremendous that they can collide with such strength, which will cause them to shatter. The resulting broken chips of magnet which go flying with a tremendous force are known for causing many injuries.
