When Pelè and Cosmos were kings

Post n°37 pubblicato il 29 Luglio 2007 da cosmosfederation

Soccer in the United States was dying a slow, painful and largely unnoticed death in 1975. Five years since the North American Soccer League (NASL) began, the game had barely registered on the public's radar. "Soccer," said one writer, "was just a game played by Commies and fairies in short pants". Even in New York, the most ethnically diverse metropolis on the planet, there was little appetite for the game and the city's own franchise, the New York Cosmos, were, according to their American goalkeeper Shep Messing, "drawing less than the skin flicks on Eighth Avenue".

Owned by Warner Communications, the New York Cosmos were, like many other franchises, a team going nowhere fast. A ragbag assembly of students, foreigners and part-timers, they played their football at a high school athletics ground in front of row after row of empty seats. Nobody knew about them, let alone cared.

Thirty years ago today, all that changed, thanks to the indomitable spirit of one man, the financial muscle of another and, of course, the global reputation of Pele, the world's greatest player. At a chaotic press conference at the Big Apple's famous presidential hang-out, the 21 Club, the Cosmos announced the transfer coup of the century when they unveiled the three-times World Cup winner as their latest recruit. "We had superstars in the United States but nothing at the level of Pele," says John O'Reilly, the club's media spokesman. "Everyone wanted to touch him, shake his hand, get a photo with him."

Five days later, Pele made his Cosmos debut at the crumbling Downing Stadium at Randall's Island (the locals called it "Vandal's Island"). Situated under the Triborough Bridge, Downing was a dump. Broken bottles littered the field, there was no running water (apart from the overflow from the toilets above the locker rooms) and there was more grass on the road into Manhattan than on the pitch. For Pele's debut against the Dallas Tornado, the groundsman Stan Cunningham even spray-painted the pitch green when he heard CBS would be covering the game. "Pele had this sort of green fungus on his leg," recalls Clive Toye, general manager and later president of the Cosmos. "He thought he had caught a disease in his first 45 minutes playing in New York but all it was the green paint coming off."

Before Pele came to town, soccer games had only ever really been covered by junior reporters, often as some kind of punishment. Now, though, there were over 300 journalists at Downing, including David Hirshey, Cosmos correspondent for the New York Daily News. "Pele was a diamond in a rhinestone setting," he says. "It was inconceivable that he would play his first game in a place that was essentially a bunch of dirt and rocks left over from the Palaeolithic era."

The impact of Pele's signing was seismic. Before, they had given away tickets with Burger King vouchers and bumper stickers. Now, they had to lock the gates when the ground reached its 22,500 capacity. "There must have been another 50,000 turned away," remembers the Cosmos coach Gordon Bradley.

Like Toye, Bradley was an Englishman who had been with the Cosmos from their inception in 1970. After an unspectacular playing career that had taken him from Sunderland to Bradford Park Avenue and on to Carlisle United, he now found himself coaching the greatest player in the history of the game. "It was a joy ride," he recalls. "I remember the first practice. A cross went behind Pele's head and he was running toward the goal. He jumped up in the air and did a bicycle kick, and scored. The press couldn't believe it. I ended the practice right then."

The Cosmos squad also had trouble adjusting to the fact they were now sharing a pitch with Pele. "The biggest challenge for us," explains Werner Roth, then captain, "was not stopping and watching him play."

Pele's signing marked the end of a four-year odyssey for Toye, a former chief football writer for the Daily Express. He, together with the NASL's Welsh commissioner Phil Woosnam, had traversed the globe in pursuit of the Brazilian, stealing meetings with him in hotel rooms and taxi cabs and doing their utmost to persuade him his future lay not in a comfortable retirement. "I told him that he had to come to America because he would have the chance to do something no one else could do - make soccer a major sport in the USA," recalls Toye. "He later admitted he had no idea what the hell I was talking about."

Though the missionary role certainly appealed to Pele, so too did the financial rewards, not least as they would help extricate him from some serious financial problems back in Brazil. Bankrolled by Warner and their charismatic chairman Steve Ross, Pele earned more in his three years in New York than he had in his entire career with Santos. And to ensure he paid as little tax as possible, Warner prepared a succession of contracts for him, with only one having any mention of soccer in it. One even had his position in the corporation as "recording artist" with the Warner subsidiary Atlantic Records. "We owned him lock, stock and barrel," says Toye.

Pele's arrival not only signalled a wholesale reversal in the fortunes of the team but in the perception of the NASL as a viable alternative to the mainstays of baseball, basketball and American football. As well as publicising a league in dire need of a fillip, he brought instant credibility to the standard of the game in the States, even if the quality overall did not justify the inflated salaries of some imports.

Suddenly, a club run by five people out of an inadequate office on Park Avenue transformed into an organisation struggling to cope with countless media requests and ticket orders every week. Every last facet of the club needed overhauling. In days, the Cosmos had more than 50 support staff to help capitalise on Pele's arrival. Where once the press conferences would take place in the locker room with a handful of hacks passing the time before the bars opened, now they were held in the 21 Club or the ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, with scores of journalists enjoying the trappings of a club heading for the big time.

Even the buffet improved, as Jamie Trecker, the Cosmos' PR director, recalls. "Before Pele got to the Cosmos, you'd only have five or six journalists at a press conference and you'd serve finger sandwiches and maybe you'd open a couple of bottles of soda if it was really high end. After Pele signed, the basic food was caviar and smoked salmon and champagne."

By 1977, the Cosmos had dropped the New York prefix and moved to Giants Stadium in New Jersey, where more stellar recruits (including Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto, Giorgio Chinaglia and Johan Neeskens) would join what had become the most glamorous team in world football. Though the front pages of New York's papers were hogged by the city's battle against bankruptcy or by another Son of Sam murder, the back pages were now reserved for the Cosmos. "We transcended everything, every culture, every socio-economic boundary," maintains Messing. "We were international, we were European, we were cool, we were Americans from the Bronx. We were everything to everybody."

On the road the Cosmos sold out every game ("like travelling with the Rolling Stones," says the club's travelling secretary Steve Marshall). In New York they were media darlings, idols of 77,000 fans (including Mick Jagger, Henry Kissinger, Robert Redford and Steven Spielberg) and virtual residents at Studio 54. In two years, they became an organisation with the cultural visibility no other arm of the Warner portfolio could boast. It mattered not that the club did not make a single cent in their 15-year history. The Cosmos had become the hottest ticket in town; Ross even had a seat belt installed in his spot in the upper tier, just in case he got overexcited and toppled over the edge.

When Pele played his last game at Giants Stadium on October 1 1977 it marked the beginning of the end, not just of an era but of the Cosmos and the NASL. Without anyone of Pele's stature to take it on, soccer's popularity nosedived and within a year crowds fell, the all-important television deal with ABC was lost and players headed back to Europe as salary caps were enforced. By 1985, the NASL was dead.

Pele's final game for the Cosmos was a friendly against Santos. Having played the first half for the New Yorkers (scoring from 30 yards), he switched sides at the interval. As the game progressed, the heavens opened, drenching all the 75,000 congregation. The next day a Brazilian newspaper ran the headline: "Even the Sky Was Crying."

·Once in a Lifetime The Incredible Story of the New York Cosmos was written by Gavin Newsham and is published by Atlantic Books on July 4, priced £8.99

Wigan Cosmos is a Football Club based in Wigan, Lancashire, England, playing our home games at William Fosters playing fields, Ince, Wigan.

We are about to enter into our 4th campaign in The South Lancashire Counties League and after promotion we are due to start our 2nd season in the 2nd Division.

We are delighted to have made it to our 4th season in The South Lancs with the club continuing to grow and evolve each season and as we constantly improve our goals and targets also change.

We are aiming to build on the foundations and our experiances of our previous seasons and really push on and with a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and maybe even a few tears we can hopefully achieve the goals we have set ourselves for this coming season.

The foundations are now firmly in place, with a settled and very exciting sqaud, this team is capable of achieving what they want this season and with a little hard work, a few goals and belief anything is possible.

We are a very talented team with some real quality additions to the side, we are very capable and if we apply ourselves in the the right way in this division, the only people who can stop us achieving our goals is ourselves, we can now realistically look at not only winning promotion but also the 2nd Division title.

BELIEVE

We are always looking to add quality players to the side to add to what we've already got in the squad exciting times lie ahead for Wigan Cosmos.

The Future Is Bright.

Beckham : the new messiah of football as Pelè ?

Post n°34 pubblicato il 16 Luglio 2007 da cosmosfederation

LOS ANGELES, United States (AFP) - David Beckham's bid to bring football in from the fringes of American sport began amid a burst of confetti and booming rock music Friday as he took his first bow for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"Soccer can be as big here as it is everywhere around the world, and I'm very proud to be a part of that over the next few years, and maybe a few more years after that," Beckham promised several thousand fans at the Home Depot Center, where the Galaxy rolled out the red carpet for their new star.

That is just what the Galaxy and Major League Soccer were banking on when they engineered the acquisition of Beckham back in January, when Spanish club Real Madrid and England had become disenchanted with the midfielder.

At the time, the deal that could be worth as much as 250 million dollars including endorsements and merchandising was seen as a move to a football backwater by a player entering the twilight of his career.

Not so, insists Beckham, who has since been recalled to England and helped Real to the Spanish League title.

"I don't see this as a winding down of my career," he said. "I may not be 22 years old anymore, but I am as fit as I was at 22. I am as eager as I was at 14 years old."

Beckham, looking dapper in a grey suit and tie, flashed his grin as he was handed a Galaxy jersey bearing his name and old Real Madrid squad number of 23 -- evoking the spirit of basketball great and Beckham hero Michael Jordan.

He posed for pictures alongside Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas and his new head coach, Frank Yallop, Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber, Tim Leiweke -- the chief executive and president of the Galaxy's owners AEG -- and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

While Beckham has known for months he was headed Stateside, he showed he still has a few adjustments to make.

"The first thing in my life is always my family," he told the crowd. "The second most important thing has always been foot...soccer," he said. "Sorry, I'll get used to that, I promise."

Beckham said he hoped to dispel any doubts of his commitment when he makes his Galaxy debut in a friendly against Premiership club Chelsea on July 21.

"For me it has always been about the football. That has always been the reasoning behind every move in my career. It has always been about the football. I'm very proud of what I've done so far.

"I've won everything possible in England, I've won a league title now in Spain and I've successfully played for my country for 11 years and captained them for six years."

In addition, Beckham and his pop-star wife, Victoria, have become a staple of the popular press, hobnobbing with an array of stars who include their new Beverly Hills neighbors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

The Beckhams' arrival in Los Angeles with their three sons late Thursday dominated local news reports on Friday morning and attracted as much coverage in the celebrity magazines and gossip columns as in the sports pages.

That popularity promises the kind of cross-over appeal that MLS officials hope will spark a surge of interest in the sport.

"It's fair to say this is a truly historic day for the sport of soccer in the United States," Garber said. "I can't think of a better player or better man at just the right moment in time to make this happen."

Some 14.5 million Americans play football, but its popularity pales in comparison to the top three sports: American football, basketball and baseball.

"Throughout my career I've always looked for challenges and something exciting in my life," Beckham said. "This is one of the biggest challenges I've taken on in my career."

While Beckham insisted he is no soccer messiah, he said the climate is better suited now to raise the profile of the game than it was in the 1970s when Pele joined the now defunct North American Soccer League.

"In those days people pumped a lot of money into one team," he said, referring to Pele's New York Cosmos.

"The MLS is a lot more stable than when Pele and George Best moved to America."

Yallop, whose Galaxy side is currently second-worst in the MLS, sounded relieved that Beckham had at last arrived.

"Since we signed David in January, it has been a long wait believe me, but I feel David is the last piece of the puzzle to get us moving in the right direction.

"He's a winner on and off the field, his teammates like him, he wins games and he's a great leader. We're all very very excited and cannot wait to get him on the field, get him in his jersey, get his boots on and win some games."

The Cosmos Federation (alliance id 44169) is a group of passionate of Hattrick joined from the same denomination of the club: Cosmos.

Hattrick is a manageriale game of soccer on line, of which you can better understand some going to www.hattrick.org.

The main scope of the Cosmos Federation is the organization of the Cosmos Cup. Draft of one competition alternative to the championship and the national Goblet. It is carried out essentially in the second part of the season when the greater part of the teams is not engaged in the national goblet.

In Hattrick there is the possibility for who is supporter (to payment) to make part of one federation and to participate to a forum of the same one. This situation limits the increase of the federation and for this it has been decided to create an alternative one in which anyone it can be enrolled without to pay null and without having other limitation taxes from the regulations of hattrick.

Now whichever team "cosmos" can make part of the federation writing one mail to:

cosmosfederation@libero.it

In the mail you must bring back compulsorily:

- the name of the team

- your nickname

- Nation

- Series

Moreover you can add a comment of presentation of your team or whichever other thing comes to you in mind.

Example:

- Maserada Cosmos

- Dr Sleepnight

- Italy

- VI.916

- Founding and President of the Cosmos Federation. Go cosmonauts!

You can write also in your language mother but for the understanding of all the members english is advisable.

Fc Cosmos Moabit - Croydon Cosmos 4 - 1

Post n°30 pubblicato il 03 Luglio 2007 da cosmosfederation

Clouds darkened the skies at FC Cosmos Moabit Arena as 3012 spectators turned up for the match. Cosmos started off with a 3-5-2 lineup. They fielded: Betcher - Prieller, Gerber, Pronk - Bruning, Schachmann, Siekierka, Costantini, Hasseling - Mehrlein, Paige.

Ccsms decided to use a 3-5-2 set up. The following players took the field: Ariva - Dong Tse, Periquito, Arno - Sundukov, Merillat, Thomas, Smith, Uddgård - Cierpka, Calafate.

The strategy for Ccsms on this day was to use their ability to press. Ccsms's Alexander Sundukov had a good first touch on the flank, but was crowded and, after a change of plan, sent the ball to David Uddgård who somehow managed to curl the ball wide. A mistake by the home side's central defence in the 8th minute allowed Steve Smith to score the 0 - 1 goal for Ccsms. Due to some great work on the right wing Cosmos's Toni Mehrlein was able to even the score in the 27th minute to 1 - 1. Ccsms's ability to press their opponents all over the field paid off frequently. Cosmos took the lead in the 32nd minute, after Peter Prieller's awkward, but ultimately successful, shot from the right. 2 - 1. 2 - 1 was the halftime score. Cosmos dictated play, as they maintained 64 percent of possession.

After 54 minutes, Toni Mehrlein put Cosmos ahead 3 - 1 when he rose to head in a hooked ball, the result of an effort from the right side. By now, Cosmos were drawing the troops back in order to defend their lead. Emanuel Paige had a fantastic opportunity to put Cosmos up another goal in the 71st minute, but he fired just over the crossbar. Cosmos managed to extend their lead to 4 - 1 when Sławomir Siekierka cut in neatly from the left side and struck a fine shot past the away team's goalkeeper. Cosmos held the ball, with a clear 73 percent of possession.

The most dominating Cosmos player was without a doubt Sławomir Siekierka. Emanuel Paige turned in a dismal performance, however. Alexander Sundukov performed admirably for Ccsms. Luís Calafate on the other hand, had a terrible day. The match ends 4 - 1.

The teams can themselves also be come to an agreement in order to play in an other stadium.

When envoys the demand for the encounter, informed the adversary through ht-mail.

Who not accept the challenge between thursday morning and saturday morning, will endure a defeat for 5 to zero and consequently the adversary will obtain the three points.

This will serve to giving the possibility to the adversary to organize a friendly one. In any case informed Dr_Sleepnight of the Maserada Cosmos of every problem.

If we are in 24 teams like the old edition , there will be four groups calls with the names of four old players of New York Cosmos:

- Johan Cruijff

- Franz Beckenbauer

- Pelè

- Giorgio Chinaglia

Every victory means 3 points, the balancing 1 point, defeat 0 points.

Five matches garanteed !

The winner of every tournament will be established in the following order:

- points totals

- difference goals

- greater number of goals

- direct match

The four winners of every group will go in semifinals ( 19 - 20 JUNE)

In this case it is obligatory to organize the friendly match with the cup rules.

The successive week the finals for the 3 place and 1 place ( 26 - 27 JUNE)

The Cosmos Cup is closed after 7 weeks at the same time with the last game of championship.

All the matches will be brought back on the blog.

Please respect the rules and the calendar

For every clarification or controversy, you do not have fear to contact Dr_Sleepnight.

Spring news from the federation

Post n°24 pubblicato il 22 Aprile 2007 da cosmosfederation

The first change regards the composition of the groups. Before it came carried out coupling the team by the series that occupied, now will make an accidental extraction, infact we have find as the teams more ahead in the series are not necessarily strongest.

The second innovation is that there will be equal number of games played at home. Before it happened that the team more strongly had the obligation always to play at home of the adversary while the team more weak always played in his stadium. In the next cup it will be balanced with a relationship of 3 to 2 (5 matches of the first turn).

The third innovation is that the cup will be opened to the teams not marked Cosmos. Therefore if you have some friends you can invite them to participate.

For now it is all, in the next weeks others communicates to you.

Cosmos Carrara win after penalty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post n°21 pubblicato il 06 Marzo 2007 da cosmosfederation

Weather conditions were fairly good for football, and Chinaglia Arena saw a crowd turnout of 1457. carrara had chosen a strategic 4-5-1 formation. The following players had been chosen: Tortora - Dyer, Lysø, Pirondini, Bonsignore - Gkiavelis, Reiss, Marković, Larsson, Fidalgo - Schlaning.

Cosmos decided to use a 4-5-1 set up. Lineup: Purrucker - La Placa, Paige, Dülken, Gardziel - Došek, Vuorinen, Launoila, Costantini, Hasselborn - Mehrlein.

Cosmos were mostly trying to use their skill at attacking on the flanks. The left side created an opportunity for the visitors in the 9th minute, and Atte Launoila wasn't about to let it go by. He got past the defenders and fired a shot that the keeper just missed. 0 - 1 for the visitors. The away team's Benjamin Dülken took advantage of a mistake on the home side's right in the 15th minute increasing Cosmos's lead to 0 - 2. 0 - 2 was the halftime score. Cosmos dictated play, as they maintained 53 percent of possession.

A marvelous carrara effort on the right resulted in a 51st minute goal by Jean-Pierre Schlaning, making the score 1 - 2. In the 58th minute, Cosmos's Emanuel Paige received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first. carrara's Christos Gkiavelis put his head to a well placed ball, lifted in from the left, and scored the 2 - 2 goal in the 75th minute. This part of the game was a standoff between the teams.

Not having decided a winner at the end of regulation, the match went into extra time. A free kick aimed at the keeper's far post almost gave Cosmos the lead in the 95th minute, but the ball just wasn't able to squirm its way through the defensive wall. carrara's Glauco Bonsignore was shown a yellow card after 96 minutes for slicing down an opponent. Cristiano Costantini's knee will be throbbing for days, but thankfully for Cosmos, he bravely continued in the match. The result was still a draw, so the match had to be settled with penalties.

carrara's Luca Pirondini appeared to lose his focus as he laid down an easy shot. Klaus Purrucker's concentration wasn't any better however, as the ball passed him on the right for 3 - 2. Cosmos's Věnceslav Došek looked insecure all the way from laying the ball down to clipping the ball miles wide of the crossbar. No goal. carrara's Glauco Bonsignore cockily booted the ball with a short-and-fast instep. The penalty, going just wide of the mark, didn't produce a goal. Cosmos's Toni Mehrlein was seemingly taken by the gravity of the moment, producing a badly laid penalty, blocked by Ferdinando Tortora. Score still 3 - 2. carrara's Ferdinando Tortora was seemingly taken by the gravity of the moment, producing a badly laid penalty, blocked by Klaus Purrucker. Score still 3 - 2. Cosmos's Klaus Purrucker penalty shot was very well placed but Ferdinando Tortora went the right way, blocking it spectacularly. The score was still 3 - 2. carrara's Jean-Pierre Schlaning made no mistake. Klaus Purrucker didn't have a chance. 4 - 2. Cosmos's Emanuel Paige looked insecure all the way from laying the ball down to clipping the ball miles wide of the crossbar. No goal. carrara's Mathew Dyer looked insecure all the way from laying the ball down to clipping the ball miles wide of the crossbar. No goal. Cosmos's Benjamin Dülken drove the ball hard to the corner but couldn't get it past a stretched out Ferdinando Tortora. The score remains 4 - 2.

Most important carrara player was Håkan Larsson. However, Jean-Pierre Schlaning made a disastrous appearance. Klaus Purrucker performed admirably for Cosmos. Władek Gardziel on the other hand, had a terrible day. The match ends 4 - 2
