LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – J. Paul Getty III, oil baron J. Paul Getty's grandson whose life was marked by kidnapping and a tragic stroke that left him handicapped, has died at his home in Buckinghamshire, England, age 54. His son, actor Balthazar Getty, said in a statement from Los Angeles on Tuesday that his father was surrounded by his family when he died on Saturday, February 5. "(He) never let his handicap keep him from living life to the fullest and he was an inspiration to all of us, showing us how to stand up to all adversity. We will miss him terribly," Balthazar Getty said. Getty was called the "golden hippie" in media headlines as a young man in which he moved within a world of artists and activists. He spent much of his youth living in Rome where, in 1973 at age 16, he was kidnapped and held for ransom in a sensational crime that made headlines worldwide. His grandfather and father initially believed the plot to be a hoax and refused to pay a ransom. They eventually gave in after Getty's kidnappers cut off his right ear and mailed it to his family along with pictures of the injured teenager. Born November 5, 1956, Getty was the oldest of four children and one of 14 grandchildren to the notoriously frugal J. Paul Getty. His father, J. Paul Getty II, looked after the family's oil interests in Italy for a time, and when he and Getty's mother, actress Gail Harris, divorced in 1964, the younger Getty stayed with his mother. As an adult, Getty attempted to join the family business but continued to struggle with the trauma from his kidnapping. He began using drugs, including cocaine and heroin, and in 1981 suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed and nearly blind. Getty was a father of two and grandfather of six children. FORT WORTH, Texas – Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey got treatment for his sprained left ankle while his teammates practiced Thursday for the Super Bowl. Pouncey's availability is in question because of the injury sustained in the AFC championship. "It's getting to be the witching hour for Maurkice," coach Mike Tomlin told a pool reporter after practice. "He's going to have to show us something very soon." If he can't play Sunday, Doug Legursky would make his first NFL start at center. JUNEAU, Alaska – Alaska's attorney general is granting state officials' request for an extension until May 31 to release potentially thousands of e-mails that Sarah Palin sent and received while she was governor. But John Burns says this comes with the "unequivocal expectation" that all records that aren't privileged will be released by then. Already, public records requests for the e-mails have been pending for more than two years. The governor's office and Department of Law requested the extension so they can finish reviewing more than 26,500 pages of records. In a memo granting the extension, Burns says several circumstances justify more time, including the need for a careful, thorough review. He says that serves interests in both a transparent government and in protecting privileged or confidential information from inadvertent disclosure. NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Dow and S&P were little changed on Thursday as disappointing labor market data offset strong results from Caterpillar, but a strong outlook from Qualcomm lifted the Nasdaq. Initial jobless claims surged to 454,000 in the latest week, rising to the highest level since late October, the government said. Three Dow components posted quarterly results, including Procter & Gamble Co (PG.N), AT&T Inc (T.N) and Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N). The heavy equipment posted a higher-than-expected profit, sending the stock up 0.4 percent to $96.23. "It is disconcerting that we can't seem to get and stay below the 400,000 level on jobless claims," said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners in Chicago. "But Caterpillar's numbers were strong overall and are a sign of improving conditions overseas." AT&T and P&G shares fell as their profits slid from the year-ago period, and AT&T's wireless subscriber growth came in below consensus. AT&T dropped 2.6 percent to $27.96, while P&G lost 2.5 percent to $64.45. The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was up 9.65 points, or 0.08 percent, at 11,995.09. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was up 2.01 points, or 0.16 percent, at 1,298.64. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was up 9.55 points, or 0.35 percent, at 2,749.05. Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) helped lift the Nasdaq, rising 4.3 percent to $54.09 a day after it raised its outlook for second-quarter and full-year revenue. Overseas, ratings agency Standard & Poor's cut Japan's long-term debt rating by one notch to AA minus, saying the government lacked a coherent plan to tackle its mounting debt. In other economic news, new orders for U.S. manufactured goods fell unexpectedly in December, according to a Commerce Department report. Also, contracts for pending sales of previously owned homes rose faster than expected in December, data from a real estate trade group indicated.
