Moringa oil source from the seed of the malunggay plant is now making waves in the United States as a major source of biodiesel, a biotechnology company has said.

Philippine-based Secura International said that North American Biofuels Inc. has asked them to supply its biodiesel needs. Secura is now completing 500,000 hecrates of farmland planted with malunggay to answer the needs of the American firm.

Secura CEO and president Danny Manayaga said the Philippines should take advantage of its edge in supplying the world with Moringa oil as source for biodiesel.

"Because the market is very near to us we can be sustainable," Manayaga said. He added that aside from the US, Japan and Korean could be become bigger markets for biofuel in the next 50 years.

It was learned that NABI was earlier looking at jatropha as a biodiesel source. But after testing a 100-liter sample of moringa, it ordered the malunggay-source oil instead since it passsed standards.

In the Philippines, the government is promoting jatropha as a source of biofuel.

Manayaga, however, said moringa oil is better than jatropha.

"The most beneficial part of malunggay is nutrition, all the parts are used. Whereas in jatropha, there are poisonous parts left when you get the oil. Its like nuclear waste. Where will you dump it? It will only leak."

The Department of Agriculture, meanwhile, said malunggay is the Philippines' answer to critics who have said that the biofuels boom only contributes to increasing global warming because of the cutting down of trees. Critics have also said that using crops as source for biofuels have posed a problem of food shortage.

"It's both for food and fuel. We eat the leaves, we can use the seeds for fuel," Alice Ilaga of the agriculture department's biotechnology program office said as she described the benefits of the malunggay tree.

At present, Secura has established 30 malunggay plantations sites nationwide covering 300,000 hectares. It is now looking for an additional 200,000 hectares from Cotabato Sultan Kudarat, Davao, Ilocos, Pangasinan and Bohol. Biolife News Service
