Microsoft published facts of its upcoming Windows Telephone 8 update on Thursday, revealing the minor modifications which can be as a consequence of roll out shortly. Known as Basic Distribution Release 2 (GDR2), the update consists of fixes to Xbox Music to provide accurate metadata, the restoration from the FM radio feature, a Information Sense app that is not exclusive to specific carriers, as well as a new option to set a Lens app because the default camera. You can find some HTML5 updates in World wide web Explorer, improved Skype and Lync stability, and Gmail CardDAV / CalDAV assistance, but overall the alterations are very minor for an update eight months just after the original Windows Telephone eight release.

As outlined by sources acquainted with Microsoft's Windows Phone plans, the company is in a "shut up and ship" mode. We're told that the lack of important modifications is resulting from the focus on Windows Phone's "Blue" update. The future update, anticipated in early 2014, appears set to incorporate a notification center, enhanced multitasking, and changes to built-in apps. We realize that Microsoft is thinking of back porting a few of the "Blue" characteristics, like a rotation lock solution, to a GDR3 update due later this year. Any ported options are mentioned to support future hardware arriving later this year, and from time to time in the request of certain phone makers like Nokia. In comparison, Windows eight.1 involves a complete host of modifications and feature additions created for tablets and PCs that may be expected to become delivered in late August ?a just ten months after the original Windows eight release.

We've learned that Microsoft had planned to roll out many Windows Telephone updates additional frequently, but delays in testing new chipsets and bugs in a number of the GDR updates have slowed down feature additions. One particular specific bug with unbranded devices not sold by carriers is said to have impacted the way a handset is identified on a network. We're told that Microsoft had a hard time fixing this distinct problem, resulting in delays to other planned work.

We're told that the majority of the concentrate for Windows Phone computer software improvements is related to hardware release and refreshes. The future GDR3 update will contain support for 5- and 6-inch Windows Phones with 1080p resolutions, and quad-core chipsets. These devices will debut later this year, and Microsoft has been working closely with OEMs to make sure Windows Phone contains the hardware help essential. Microsoft revealed on Thursday that collectively with Nokia it "shared early builds of application and hardware" to prepared the Lumia 1020. "I wrote more than ten pages of feedback myself on the Nokia Pro Camera app since it was being created," says Microsoft's Joe Belfiore.

The message from Microsoft on Windows Telephone updates is mixed. When the company promised a year ago that it was creating an enthusiasts system to supply early access to updates, Microsoft has however to detail when it plans to deliver it. The plan was said to "keep your phone fresher than ever ahead of." For now though, all update signs point to early 2014. Microsoft confirmed it really is arranging a "feature pack" update within the 1st half of next year that should consist of some enterprise improvements and VPN help. Regrettably, it is not sharing additional info about any other additions. It leaves Nokia and other telephone makers getting to depend on hardware promoting points, understanding complete properly that the Windows Telephone computer software and ecosystem nonetheless lags the competitors.
