DVD, HD TV & 16:9 Enhanced Images

Have you ever given thought to the figures 16x9 or 16:9 that is there somewhere in your DVD packaging? Well, it is not much of a big thing, but a simple thing that lets you watch DVD movies in its real size and quality. You don't lose areas and you don't have to watch distorted images. I will explain the details below.

DVDs are built to display 16:9 enhanced images. 16:9 image is the resolution of ordinary movies that you see in theatres. 16:9 means, for every 16 units (cm, inch, or metre) width, there will be 9 units height. Simply put, if your HD TV is 16 inch wide, it has to be 9 inch high. In case of ordinary CRT TVs, the aspect ratio is 4:3. When it compares against HDTV, for every 16 inch of width, the TV has to have 12 inch height. This aspect ratio doesn't deliver images of the right kind, as you would in a movie screen, where the screen is wider.

Conventionally, there are two methods of maximum utilization of the video image – the first is to zoom out the image. It leaves blank, black areas at the top and bottom of the ordinary TV screen. The other method is to chip away both sides and to retain the central part of the image. Trying to fit the 16:9 image in a 4:3 screen will lead to funny images – funnily taller and thinner images. A square box will be displayed a rectangular box.

When you have a    adam 12 dvd player, it is essential that you have a 16:9 enhanced screen to better enjoy the movies you watch. HDTV has this screen aspect ratio, which accurately displays the image as it is intended by the producers of the video, without losing any quality or without parts chipped away. Otherwise, the image will be shrunk to fit the width of the screen, leaving black areas at the top and bottom of the image. The DVD stores images at resolutions much higher than that, but the screen doesn't have the capabilities of displaying it.

If you feel something is missing in the small screen, which you have found in the widescreen, it is time you should be shifting to DVD and HDTV, if you haven't already. If you have a kung fu the legend continues dvd player and you don't have a wide screen TV, an HDTV, you are missing out the fun you should be having. It will show you the movie images, without cutting away the sides and without shrinking them to fit into your TV.
