BRUXELLES (Reuters) - L'Alto rappresentante per la politica estera Ue, Catherine Ashton ha criticato apertamente l'India perché impedisce all'ambasciatore italiano a New Delhi di lasciare il Paese, violando il diritto internazionale.
Ricordando che la convenzione di Vienna del 1961 sulle relazioni diplomatiche è "una pietra miliare della legalit internazionale e deve essere rispettata sempre, la Ashton scrive in una nota che "qualsiasi limitazione della libert di movimento dell'ambasciatore italiano in India sarebbe contraria alle obbligazioni internazionali che discendono da questa convenzione".
L'Alto rappresentante Ue ha aggiunto di continuare a sperare in una soluzione concordata della controversia tra i due paesi.
La vicenda nasce con la detenzione da parte dell'India di due fucilieri italiani della Marina, accusati di avere ucciso due pescatori indiani scambiandoli per pirati.
Quando il governo italiano ha deciso di non far tornare indietro i due marò al termine della licenza per votare in Italia, New Delhi come contromisura sta impedendo all'ambasciatore italiano di lasciare il Paese.
