Sri Lanka set 218 to reach Cricket World Cup final

Post n°18 pubblicato il 30 Marzo 2011 da ikzpadnqlrm

Sri Lanka were set a target of 218 to beat New Zealand in their World Cup semi-final on Tuesday as Muttiah Muralitharan marked his final international on home ground with a wicket off his last ball.

Scott Styris hit a resolute half century at the R. Premadasa stadium but none of the other batsmen could stay long enough to give a final flourish to the innings.

Ajantha Mendis (3-35) and Lasith Malinga (3-55) kept it tight after Daniel Vettori won the toss and batted.

Styris added 77 for the fourth wicket with Ross Taylor (36) but the Sri Lankan bowlers never allowed them to run away with a big total, dismissing the Kiwis in 48.5 overs.

Off-spinner Muralitharan, playing his last international match in Sri Lanka, finished with 2-42, dismissing Styris lbw off the last ball he bowled before a capacity 35,000 home crowd.

The 38-year-old, who has already quit Test cricket, has a chance to play his last one-day match in Mumbai if Sri Lanka qualify for the April 2 final.

Styris and Kane Williamson (22) added 42 in the batting power-play but New Zealand lost their last seven wickets for just 56 runs.

Sri Lanka once again dismissed hard-hitting Brendon McCullum through a spinner when left-armer Rangana Herath bowled him in the eighth over for 13.

Martin Guptill (39) and Jesse Ryder (19) took the total to 69 before Muralitharan had the big left-hander caught off a quickish delivery.

Soon it became 84-3 when Malinga bowled Guptill with a ferocious yorker after the opener had hit three boundaries off 65 balls.

Styris hit five boundaries during his 77-ball knock.

Sri Lanka started on a positive note when Muralitharan was declared fit to take the field, after being doubtful because of injury.

His inclusion meant Sri Lanka played with the same three spinners with which they beat England by 10 wickets in the quarter-finals.

New Zealand brought in left-arm paceman Andy McKay in place of Luke Woodcock who was part of the team which beat South Africa in quarters.

Dell's margins in spotlight, Wall Street waits and sees

Post n°17 pubblicato il 16 Febbraio 2011 da ikzpadnqlrm

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Investors will scrutinize Dell Inc's (DELL.O) quarterly earnings for signs that healthy business spending and lower component costs are shoring up margins, a top priority for the world's No. 2 personal computer maker.

Wall Street has criticized Dell for its choppy execution on that front, and the company is keen to demonstrate that efforts to improve profitability by moving into new and higher-margin markets are bearing fruit.

Dell's shares often trade below its gross margin, but the company has missed Wall Street's target in six of the past eight quarters. Analysts, on average, are predicting a margin of 18.6 percent for the fourth quarter.

Investors have adopted a wait-and-see attitude. The company's stock is flat from a year ago, versus a roughly 30 percent gain in the Nasdaq composite index.

Last quarter, Dell surprised Wall Street as earnings and margins blew past expectations, and the company raised its yearly forecast.

For its fiscal fourth quarter, Dell is expected to earn 37 cents a share on revenue of $15.7 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Dell is scheduled to report fiscal fourth-quarter earnings after the market closes on Tuesday.

The bulk of Dell's revenue comes from low-margin PCs, but the company has been working for years to diversify its revenue base and move deeper into more-profitable data center equipment and the mobile market.

With $14 billion in cash, the company plans to be an aggressive acquirer as it battles foes such as International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N) and Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ.N).

The company has also made plenty of noise in the mobile market of late, launching tablets and smartphones, but the reception has been lukewarm.

Dell trades at near 10 times forward earnings, a bit better than rival HP, but a lower valuation than IBM.

JPMorgan CEO: I'm staying put, and bank is growing

Post n°16 pubblicato il 16 Febbraio 2011 da ikzpadnqlrm

NEW YORK (Reuters) – JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) Chief Executive Jamie Dimon said his bank will not be "goaded into doing something dumb" with its capital, even as it prepares an aggressive expansion in consumer and private banking over the next five years.

Speaking at the bank's annual investor day, Dimon said the bank is prepared to withstand any phasing out of mortgage financiers Fannie Mae (FNMA.OB) and Freddie Mac (FMCC.OB), despite being one of the nation's largest home loan providers.

This is in part because it expects 2011 to be a year of growth for the bank, primarily through existing businesses but especially in Latin America and Asia, he said.

Dimon, a Democrat, also downplayed persistent speculation he might leave the second-largest U.S. bank by assets to go into the political arena.

"I'm not going into politics and I'm not opening a restaurant. I love what I do. I want to be here. I want to stay," he said.

Dimon added: "There are people here who can take my spot."

BRANCH BANKING GROWTH

JPMorgan plans to will add at least 1,000 branches in the next three years and could add up to 2,000 within five years, said retail financial services Chief Executive Charlie Scharf.

The bank said it expects "aggressive growth" in California and Florida in particular. It ended September with 5,172 U.S. branches, trailing Wells Fargo & Co's (WFC.N) roughly 6,500 and the nearly 6,000 that Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) operates.

Scharf said branch expansion will largely be in areas where Chase operates now. He also said there were few attractive opportunities for Chase to grow by buying another bank.

"When you look at our existing footprint, we know exactly who we'd be interested in and not interested in, and we know the same for out-of-footprint and it's not a long list of names," he said. "A lot of the smaller transactions that you see for us don't seem to make a whole lot of sense."

JPMorgan significantly boosted its branch network in 2008 when it bought the banking business of Washington Mutual Inc, the largest U.S. bank or thrift to fail.

CONCERNS

Despite beating analyst estimates for fourth-quarter earnings, JPMorgan faces questions about declining trading volumes, its long-time ties to imprisoned Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff, its foreclosure practices and pending financial regulation, which could crimp profits.

Scharf addressed part of the regulation issue, saying JPMorgan stood to lose $1.3 billion of revenue from new regulations on debit card processing fees.

Shares of JPMorgan closed up 28 cents, or 0.6 percent, at $46.82, compared with a 0.3 percent decline in the KBW Bank Index (.BKX).

Two months after investor days, shares of a bank have historically risen an average of 15 percent, according to a Barclays Capital research note published last week.

Bruins shoot, fight way to win over rival Montreal

Post n°15 pubblicato il 10 Febbraio 2011 da ikzpadnqlrm

BOSTON – Milan Lucic scored twice in a wild second period, and Nathan Horton had a goal and four assists for Boston as the Bruins outslugged and outlasted the Montreal Canadiens to win 8-6 on Wednesday night.

All-Star Tim Thomas allowed a season-high six goals, making up for an off-night in the net by squaring off with Montreal counterpart Carey Price during a second-period fight that left the penalty boxes overflowing and the ice littered with equipment.

Michael Ryder had two goals, and Brad Marchand, Dennis Seidenberg and Adam McQuaid also scored for Boston, which beat its Original Six rival for the first time this season. David Krejci had three assists.

Max Pacioretty scored two of Montreal's four power play goals, and Brian Gionta scored his 200th NHL goal as the Canadiens lost in regulation for just the third time in 10 games.

P.K. Subban, Yannick Weber and David Desharnais added goals for Montreal.

Thomas stopped 27 shots. Price made 26 saves. The teams combined for 182 penalty minutes, with the Canadiens holding a 95-87 edge. Boston had 24 penalties, and Montreal was called for 21.

Ryder beat Price another time on a goal that was waved off because Marchand crashed into the crease; replays showed Weber pushed him there.

That wasn't the only contact the goalies saw as the teams played for the lead in the Northeast Division; with the win, Boston held off the Canadiens and extended its lead to four points. During a second-period brawl that left five Bruins and four Canadiens in the penalty box, Thomas sprinted down the ice and challenged Price.

The players spent more time shedding their gloves and masks than actually punching.

Another fight broke out with 41 seconds to play, with eight players squaring off — four of them receiving game misconducts. At the end, the Bruins had just five skaters left on the bench and Montreal six.

Marchand and Seidenberg scored 12 seconds apart to give Boston a 2-0 lead in what turned out to be a relatively tame first period. That was neutralized when Gionta scored 25 seconds into the second period and Subban tied it 8 minutes later.

Then things got weird.

In quick succession, the Bruins went ahead; Montreal tied it; Boston took the lead again and then made it 5-3 on Lucic's first goal — and Horton's third assist — with 7:29 left in the second. Five seconds after the faceoff, players began squaring off in the corner at the Canadiens' end and, after Price skated over, Thomas sprinted at his Montreal counterpart.

Just a punch or two later, Thomas was on the ice. And 12 seconds into the resulting Montreal power pla2C Desharnais cut the deficit to 5-4. But Lucic made it a 6-4 game two minutes later on a short-handed goal.

In all, the teams combined for eight goals in the second period — seven of them in a 6:19 span — as the game went from a 2-1 duel to a 6-4 shootout.

Pacioretty made it a one-goal game with 12:54 left. But just a minute after Ryder's would-be goal was waved off, he scored one that counted and restored Boston's two-goal lead.

Notes: Thomas is the first Bruins goaltender to get a fighting major penalty since Byron Dafoe in 2002. ... Montreal D James Wisniewski, who missed the previous two games with the flu, returned to the lineup. ... Bruins forward Tyler Seguin, the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, was a healthy scratch. ... It was Claude Julien's 300th game as Bruins coach, seventh-most on the team's career list.
