BEIJING – Thirteen out of 29 miners trapped for nearly a day in a flooded Chinese coal mine have been lifted to safety and the rest have been confirmed alive, state media said Monday. The miners were trapped Sunday morning after the small Batian mine in southwest China's Sichuan province suddenly flooded. Rescuers initially thought only 28 were trapped but made contact with the workers Monday and revised the figure upward. State broadcaster China Central Television showed a line of ambulances and large crowds waiting near the entrance to the mine, and medics wrapping a survivor in blankets before carrying him to an ambulance on a stretcher. The miners still underground were alive and in stable condition, CCTV said. China's mines are the deadliest in the world, with more than 2,600 people killed in coal mine accidents in 2009 alone. The official Xinhua News Agency said Batian had stopped production and was being upgraded to increase its annual capacity from 50,000 tons to 60,000 tons. The workers had been underground for safety work, it said. Though most of China's mining accidents occur in small, illegal mines, Xinhua quoted Lin Shucheng, chief of the provincial work safety bureau, as saying Batian's operation was legal and fully licensed. China depends on coal for 70 percent of its energy production and its mines are the deadliest in the world, with more than 2,600 people killed in coal mine accidents in 2009 alone. NAGPUR, India (AFP) – Rahul Dravid struck a superb 191 to put India in a winning position in the series-deciding third and final Test against New Zealand on Monday. The stylish right-hander smashed 21 fours in his nearly 10-hour innings and shared 193 runs with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (98) to help India declare their first innings on 566-8 for a huge lead of 373 runs. Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh then gave India an early breakthrough by having opener Tim McIntosh trapped leg before wicket for eight. The visitors need 349 runs more with nine wickets in hand to avoid an innings defeat after finishing day three on 24-1. Brendon McCullum was unbeaten on 15 and Gareth Hopkins was on one. The day belonged to Dravid who steadied the innings after India lost three wickets for 32 runs early in the morning session. He looked set for a well-deserved sixth double-century but was caught by Martin Guptill as he attempted to loft part-timer Kane Williamson (1-45) over long-on. "It would have been nice to get those nine runs," said Dravid. "I guess it was a wrong choice of shot on my part. But the real credit should go to our bowlers for bowling out New Zealand for 193 in their first innings. "It helped us get a big lead in the end." Dhoni narrowly missed out on a century, offering a tame return catch to left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori (3-178) after facing 156 balls and hitting 12 fours and a six. Dravid completed his second century of the series with a flicked two off Vettori and celebrated it by pumping his fists in the air. He made 104 in the drawn first Test in Ahmedabad. Harbhajan, enjoying rich form with the bat in the series, tried to add some quick runs after the dismissals of Dhoni and Dravid but was caught by McCullum for 20 off paceman Chris Martin an hour before stumps. Earlier, India slipped to 328-5 inside the first hour of the morning session after resuming at a strong 292-2. Debutant New Zealand paceman Andy McKay bagged a memorable first Test wicket when Sachin Tendulkar (61) edged him behind the stumps in the second over of the day. The batting superstar added just four runs to his overnight 57. He hit eight fours in his 129-ball knock. "We are on the backfoot at the moment," said McKay. "We will take it session by session and try to take the match to the fifth day." Almost a year after its theatrical debut, "Avatar" is due to arrive December 1 as a 3-D Blu-ray disc, butto go along with it-and according to the movie's producer, it could be a long time before you can order the 3-D Blu-ray of James Cameron's blockbuster on its own. "Avatar" producer Jon Landau says that the 3-D Blu-ray for "Avatar" will eventually become available as a stand-alone disc, but only once there are more viewers out there with 3-D TVs in their living rooms. "We were ahead of the curve on DVD with 'Titanic' and we don't want to make that mistake again," Landau recently . Landau added that when "Titanic" was initially released on DVD, in 1999, DVD players were only in about 500,000 U.S. households, resulting in "disappointing" sales. There's already a best-selling Blu-ray disc of "Avatar" on the market, and the predictable "extended collector's edition" (chock-full of extras missing from the initial bare-bones release) is due next week-but those discs are the 2-D version of the movie. BEIRUT (Reuters) – Lebanese security forces arrested Islamist preacher Omar Bakri Mohammed on Sunday, three days after a court sentenced him and 21 other people to life in prison for carrying out "terrorist acts." A police statement said Bakri tried to flee when they came to arrest him at his home in the northern city of Tripoli, but he was captured after shots were fired at his car's back tires. He was one of 47 people sentenced on Thursday night who received terms ranging from three months to life imprisonment. Those who received life were sentenced in absentia and have the right to appeal against the verdict. A judicial source said the convicted people "belonged to an armed group with the purpose of ... killing and sabotaging. They also helped terrorists in moving and gave them weapons to kill civilians and troops." The source did not specify which attacks were involved but said they took place in Lebanon. Bakri, a Lebanese citizen of Syrian origin, denied the charges and told Reuters on Friday the sentence was politically motivated. He said he had not even been informed about the court session at which he was sentenced. Bakri, who used to live in London, became infamous when he referred to the hijackers behind the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States as the "magnificent 19." He has been banned from entering Britain for the last five years. He has insisted his message is peaceful and said the controversial "magnificent 19" comment was a stunt.
