Teens' Weight Loss Surgery May Weaken Bones

Post n°24 pubblicato il 03 Aprile 2011 da kazuyoqnmcjr

At the moment, I do not think there is cause for alarm," Kaulfers said of the study findings. That's because the teens, who averaged 17 years old, still had bone mass within the normal range, she said. They had started with above-average bone mass for their age and gender.

The findings are reported online March 28 in the journal Pediatrics.

Kaulfers and her colleagues decided to study the teens because a loss of bone mineral content during adolescence, when they should be approaching peak bone mass, could potentially compromise future bone health.

Studies of adults have also found that their bone mass declines after the surgery.

Kaulfers did the study while at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati. Some of the participants were part of the Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery Consortium supported by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

All of the teens, 10 boys and 51 girls, had gastric bypass, a procedure in which the stomach is reduced from the size of a football to that of a golf ball.

The researchers measured bone mineral content and density by dual-energy radiograph absorptiometry (DXA). When possible, measurements were taken before surgery and then every three to six months after the surgery for up to two years.

Called a "z score," the teens' average bone mineral density scores decreased from 1.5 to 0.1. A z score of 0 is normal, Kaulfers said, and a negative score would reflect low bone density.

Though what happens beyond two years is unknown, Kaulfers said that the bone loss appears to be offset by the benefits of the surgery, such as reducing the likelihood that the teens would develop diabetes.

But teens who have the surgery need to be closely monitored, she cautioned.

The bone loss after weight loss surgery may be due to the weight loss itself, she said, or it could stem from other factors, such as hormonal changes.

"I think the note of caution [about long-term follow-up] is very good," said Dr. Robin Blackstone, president-elect of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and a bariatric surgeon in Scottsdale, Ariz.

She said she orders annual bone scans for her teen patients.

Dr. Neil Roth, an orthopaedic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, cited limitations to the research, which the study also noted.

"A fairly high percent didn't have a DXA scan before the study because they couldn't fit into the scanner" so there was no information on their bone status before the surgery, he said. That was the case for 64 percent, according to the study.

The long-term effect on bone health is unfolding for teens, so until more research is in, he said, proceeding with caution would be wise.

"Make sure, as with any procedure, you exhaust your conservative measures first before you embark on something that is life-altering."

Woman accused of faking son's cancer sentenced

Post n°23 pubblicato il 03 Aprile 2011 da kazuyoqnmcjr

A Michigan woman convicted of scamming thousands of dollars from donors by drugging her 12-year-old son to make him appear to have cancer was ordered Tuesday to spend a year in jail as part of a sentence the judge said he was reluctant to impose and family members complained was too lenient.

Carol Schnuphase pleaded no contest last month to charges of second-degree child abuse and acting under false pretenses. On Tuesday, she apologized for her actions before Macomb County Circuit Judge Richard Caretti told her he would give her time in the county jail rather than his preference — state prison.

"Your conduct, ma'am, in this case is reprehensible. To tell a vulnerable, defenseless young boy that he is dying of cancer for your own pecuniary gain is almost beyond the realm of comprehension," said Caretti, who based his sentence on a deal reached with Schnuphase's lawyer. "To then give your son strong opiate-based pills crushed up in his apple sauce to further your despicable scheme defies all reason."

The defendant's aunt, Lorraine Kelsch, said after the sentencing that the family had wanted Schnuphase to be sentenced to five years in prison.

"My reaction is disgust," Kelsch said. "That sentence stinks."

Defense attorney Dominic Greco said his client's actions were out of character and may have stemmed in part from her husband's sudden death and the recent loss of her job.

"She was basically at the end of her rope," Greco said.

Schnuphase, 47, also is accused of shaving her son's head and eyebrows. Court records show she told her son he had leukemia. Prosecutors said a hospital tested the boy, who is now 13, and declared him cancer-free, although he was going through opiate withdrawal.

Authorities said Schnuphase last year elicited donations from individuals, groups and members of at least one church who believed they were helping to pay for her son's medical care as he underwent chemotherapy. She received $7,500 from a church fundraiser, in addition to other donations, and her son was given gifts, including an Xbox video game system.

Caretti ordered the Roseville resident to pay thousands of dollars in restitution to the church and others who gave her money. He also gave her credit for six months of time served, ordered her to serve three years of probation and house arrest upon her release from the Macomb County jail.

A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt but allowed Caretti to convict and sentence her.

Gartner forecasts 5.6 percent rise in IT spending

Post n°22 pubblicato il 30 Marzo 2011 da kazuyoqnmcjr

Worldwide information technology spending is expected to rise 5.6 percent this year with tablet computers like Apple's iPad helping to drive growth, a technology research company said Wednesday.

Gartner forecast worldwide IT spending of $3.6 trillion in 2011, up from $3.4 trillion last year. It raised its previous forecast of 5.1 percent growth to 5.6 percent.

"This stable forecast outlook comes despite political unrest in the Middle East, while the impact on IT markets of the recent natural disasters in Japan is yet to be fully understood," Gartner said.

The Middle East share of global IT spending is around two percent, according to Gartner.

"While the political unrest affecting many countries in the region may well dent IT spending levels, any impact would be insignificant at the global level," Gartner research vice president Richard Gordon said in a news release.

"We had largely completed our forecast by the time the recent natural disasters in Japan occurred, and we are still evaluating their likely impact on our forecast," Gordon said.

"On this point, we are looking at two potential effects on IT markets as a result of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan: consequences of disruptions in the global electronics supply chain and impacts on IT demand," he said.

Gartner said that, beginning this quarter, it was adding tablet computers to its computing hardware spending estimates, a move which lifted the computing hardware growth outlook from 7.5 percent to 9.5 percent for the year.

"Absent the addition of media tablets, the forecast would have slightly declined in constant-dollar terms; however, with their addition, there's virtually no change in underlying forecast growth at the level of overall IT," Gordon said.

"The addition of media tablets, reinforced by an expected additional decline in the value of the dollar, accounts for the increase in top-line growth," he said.

Gartner projected worldwide spending on tablets to reach $29.4 billion in 2011, up from $9.6 billion in 2010, when Apple was the only significant player in the market.

Gartner said global spending on tablets is expected to increase at an annual average rate of 52 percent through 2015.

Worldwide telecom spending is expected to increase 4.9 percent this year to $2.11 trillion, IT services spending is forecast to grow 5.0 percent to $824 billion while enterprise software spending is expected to rise $7.6 billion to $255 billion.

Md. bank exec faces charges involving gun at BWI

BALTIMORE – Maryland Transportation Authority Police said Saturday that a bank executive and soccer team owner was issued a criminal summons after he was found with a loaded handgun in carry-on luggage at BWI Marshall Airport's security area.

Police spokeswoman Cheryl Sparks said Saturday evening that Edwin F. Hale Sr. faces charges of interfering with security procedures and violating security regulations following the Friday incident.

"He was in violation at the screening area," Sparks told the Associated Press.

She said Hale was not arrested but was detained and then ordered to appear in Anne Arundel County District Court. Hale could face up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine if convicted, authorities said.

Hale, 64, is the chairman of Baltimore's First Mariner Bancorp and the owner of the Baltimore Blast indoor soccer team. He could not be reached for comment by the AP on Saturday evening. Sparks said Hale has a permit to carry a handgun.

Hale told The Baltimore Sun on Friday that he "completely forgot" that he had packed the .38 caliber handgun as he rushed to catch a flight to Milwaukee to see his soccer team play.

MDTA Police Chief Marcus L. Brown told The Sun that Hale was not given preferential treatment because of his position in the business community; he also chairs the Baltimore Convention and Tourism Board. Brown said Hale was issued a summons instead of arrested because "he has a valid permit and there was no reason to believe he was there to cause any threats at the airport."

Sparks said it is legal for an individual with a permit to carry a firearm into the airport, but that it is a violation to take it into the security area.

Home favourite Reichelt triumphs in super-G

Post n°20 pubblicato il 06 Febbraio 2011 da kazuyoqnmcjr

HINTERSTODER, Austria (AFP) – Austria's Hannes Reichelt ended a near three-year wait for success on the World Cup circuit when he stormed to victory in the men's super-G at Hinterstoder on Saturday.

Compatriot Benjamin Raich was second with Bode Miller of the United States in third place.

The 30-year-old Reichelt laid the foundations for victory in the middle section of the winding course to finish 0.34sec ahead of Raich and 0.93sec in front of Miller.

It was his fifth World Cup victory -- four of which have come in the super-G -- and arrived just three days before the start of the world championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, which run from February 8-20.

"The past three years haven't been so easy, even if I have had a couple of podium places in between," said Reichelt, whose last win came at Bormio in March 2008.

Ivica Kostelic of Croatia took fifth place, behind Switzerland's Carlo Janka, to reinforce his overall World Cup lead.

With 12 races remaining Kostelic has 1223 points and a massive lead on Swiss all-rounder Silvan Zurbriggen, who is second on 703.

Raich's first podium place since the Val d'Isere slalom in December coincided with his Austrian team receiving positive news about Hans Grugger, who has come out of a coma following a heavy crash at Kitzbuhel two weeks ago.

"The good news about Hans has given the whole team a lift," said Raich, who pulled out of the Chamonix leg of the World Cup last week to get over a cold.

"Recently I've been in good form, but the results just haven't been there."

Miller, who also took a break from racing in Chamonix last week, confirmed his solid form two weeks after finishing second behind Swiss Didier Cuche in the feared Kitzbuhel downhill.

"I am always happy to be on the podium, especially this year," said Miller.

"You know me, the result is always secondary to the feeling I have while skiing. I skiied pretty poorly in my opinion. It was a challenging hill, challenging snow, a tough course-set.

"Nobody skiied on this hill before."

Cuche, the downhill World Cup leader, flattered to decieve, finishing in 19th place but reinforcing his second place in the super-G standings.

He is now 36 points behind Austria's Georg Streitberger, who has been out injured since last month.

One of the surprises of the day came from French teenager Alexis Pinturault.

The recent winner of two junior world titles, 19-year-old Pinturault had never before finished a World Cup race and despite starting with bib number 62 he finished in a commendable sixth place.

With the bi-annual world championships on the horizon, many top racers -- including Miller -- seem to have virtually opted out of the overall World Cup race.

"Obviously the championships are the focus point of the year," added the American, a former two-time winner of the prestigious World Cup title.

Raich, meanwhile, is keeping mum about which disciplines he will compete in next week.

He simply wants to prove to his detractors that his mediocre form this season is no reason to keep him out the 'Wunderteam'.

"I don't know how many events I will race in," added the Austrian, the World Cup winner in 2006, who has finished runner-up for the past four seasons.

"All I want to do is ski well enough to prove I deserve my place in the team."
