The Max Cure Foundation/Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation Collaborative Grant in Pediatric Cancer Research will fund novel research to develop minimally toxic therapies to improve the quality of life for children with cancer, with the ultimate goal of finding cures for pediatric cancers.

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 26, 2011

The , a non-profit organization whose mission is to fund pediatric cancer causes, and the(SWCRF), an international organization dedicated to curing and preventing cancer, have established The Max Cure Foundation/Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation Collaborative Grant in Pediatric Cancer Research to fund novel research in pediatric cancer. The goals of this new grant are to develop minimally toxic therapies to improve the quality of life for children with cancer, with the ultimate goal of finding cures for pediatric cancers.

“We are very pleased to partner with the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation,” said David Plotkin, chairman of The Max Cure Foundation. “The primary mission of Max Cure is the establishment of a cell therapy lab at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and we’ll now be able to expand our reach by helping to support the broader pediatric cancer research community.”

The Max Cure Foundation/Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation Collaborative Grant in Pediatric Cancer Research will award $300,000 over a three-year period ($100,000 per year) to reprogram the cancer cell and deliver less toxic therapies.

“The treatments available for pediatric cancer patients today leave many survivors and their families worrying about the long-term effects of treatments,” said Samuel Waxman, M.D., who is the Scientific Director of the SWCRF. “The SWCRF helped develop a minimally toxic therapy to cure a rare leukemia more than two decades ago. Through collaboration and innovative research, we hope to offer pediatric cancer patients improved treatment options.”

The SWCRF will apply its stringent peer-review process in the grant selection by members of its Scientific Advisory Board. Funded investigators will become a part of the SWCRF's Institute Without Walls – which includes a cadre of scientists and researchers all over the globe who share ideas and resources to advance the pace of cancer research.

By joining the SWCRF in this collaborative effort, The Max Cure Foundation is thrust into the forefront of the segment of the international scientific community whose goal is to further the cause of pediatric cancer research.

ABOUT THE MAX CURE FOUNDATION FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER CAUSESFormed in December 2008, The Max Cure Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation focused on conventional and innovative fundraising with a clear and focused mission to advance a cure for pediatric cancer and finding effective treatments for children with cancer through:     Raising funds for innovative research to improve treatments and quality of life during and post treatment     Building public awareness of the fight to cure pediatric cancer     Inspiring hope and courage in children with cancer, their families and communities

The Foundation was established by the Plotkin family in honor of Maxwell Grant Plotkin, who, in May 2007 at age four, was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of B-cell Lymphoma and continues to bravely fight his disease and inspire others to rise above adversity.

The Foundation’s initial goal is to raise $5 million for the creation of a first of its kind Cell Therapy Laboratory at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).     In excess of $1.2 million has been raised to date.     $675,000 has been contributed to the Max Cure Fund at MSKCC, formed by the Plotkinfamily in June 2007, whose funds are earmarked for the underwriting of the innovative research laboratory.     $175,000 has been contributed to other pediatric cancer causes.

SE Asia seen beset by chronic, costly diseases

Post n°13 pubblicato il 27 Gennaio 2011 da kazuyoqnmcjr

Tag: funky

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Chronic illnesses including cancer, heart disease and stroke caused 2.6 million deaths, or 60 percent of all deaths, in Southeast Asia in 2005, and that will balloon to 4.2 million by 2030, researchers warned.

Apart from draining personal and household incomes, national incomes would be sapped in the form of lost lablaborour and savings, they said in a paper published as part of a special edition on Southeast Asia in The Lancet on Tuesday.

Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam were among the countries surveyed by the journal, which called for universal health coverage especially to protect the poor.

"A total of US$7 billion would be lost between 2006 and 2015 (to national incomes) because of chronic non-communicable diseases from just five ... countries: Myanmar, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam," said a team led by Antonio Dans at the University of the Philippines' College of Medicine.

Dans's team, whose paper was the fourth in a six-paper series, said the estimate of $7 billion in loses was conservative as it did not include the costs of cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a growing problem that affects the respiratory system.

While the figure of 60 percent of deaths from chronic illnesses is lower than Europe's 86 percent and 78 percent in the United States, the health infrastructure in Asia is frail and the region is much less prepared to handle such illnesses which can be very expensive to treat.

As the diseases share common behavioral risk factors, such as smoking, excess weight, unhealthy diet and lack of exercise, proper surveillance was urgently needed so that intervention may be designed to mitigate the epidemic, they wrote.

In the second paper, researchers highlighted uneven progress in reducing maternal and child deaths in the region.

Although less than 10 children under 5 died for every 1,000 live births in Brunei, Singapore and Malaysia, the rate in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar was between 50 and 70, among the highest in Asia.

"Disparities exist in antenatal care coverage, use of skilled birth attendants, and diphtheria, polio, tetanus and measles vaccination together with use of oral rehydration therapy (for diarrhea), which are all key to the development of a continuum of care," said a team led by Cecilia Acuin of the Institute of Clinical Epidemiology at the University of the Philippines.

In the third paper, researchers warned that the region was a hot spot for emerging infectious diseases -- such as SARS and the H5N1 bird flu virus -- because of population growth and movement, urbanization, changes in food production and other factors.

"There has been substantial investment in surveillance capacity in recent years, but it remains weak in many areas," wrote the team led by Richard Coker of the Communicable Diseases Policy Research Group at Mahidol University in Thailand.

In the fifth paper, researchers said five countries -- Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam -- had insufficient healthcare workers, falling below the minimum requirement set by the World Health Organization at 2.28 doctors, nurses and midwives per 1,000 people.

"To meet the WHO threshold in these five countries, an estimated 884,868 health professionals would be needed, representing a shortfall of around 232,417 relative to the current workforce," wrote a team led by Churnrurtai Kanchanachitra from Mahidol University.

The region has different levels of health care from countries such as Laos and Cambodia, which depend on donor funding, to countries such as Malaysia and the Philippines where tax-funded health coverage is relatively extensive.

FAO warns against food export curbs

Post n°12 pubblicato il 26 Gennaio 2011 da kazuyoqnmcjr

MILAN (Reuters) – The United Nations' food agency warned food producing countries on Wednesday against introducing export curbs to protect local markets as world food prices rose close to levels that triggered food riots in 2007/2008.

Global food prices rose above 2008 highs in December with the Food Price Index of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at record highs.

Wheat and other grains rallied in January on concerns about tight supplies, with Euronext milling wheat futures hitting new contract highs on Wednesday.

"FAO strongly advises against such measures, as they often provoke more uncertainty and disruption on world markets and drive prices up further globally, while depressing prices domestically and hence curtailing incentives to produce more food," Richard China, director of the FAO Policy and Programme Development Support Division, said in a statement.

Grain prices surged in 2010 as wheat was driven higher by a series of weather events including drought in Russia, which introduced an export ban. In 2008, several countries curbed exports.

New price shocks have raised serious concerns about implications for food markets in vulnerable countries, the FAO said in the statement, as it published updated guidelines on how to deal with high food prices in developing countries.

This month has seen civil unrest in several countries including Algeria, Jordan and Sudan, due at least in part to high food prices.

The agency has called upon countries not to take any policy actions that might appear useful in the short term but could undermine existing markets and have harmful longer-term effects or even aggravate the situation.

"In cases where markets are malfunctioning or absent, it may be necessary to take extreme measures that shortcut market mechanisms. In this situation, interventions could also be used to help private sector operators emerge," the agency said.

In the medium and longer term, only investment in developing countries' agriculture would ensure sustainable productivity growth, healthy markets, increased resilience to international price spikes and improved food security, FAO's China said.

Is MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell a socialist?

Post n°11 pubblicato il 05 Dicembre 2010 da kazuyoqnmcjr

Tag: abarth

Lawrence O’Donnell is a socialist.

At least, that’s what the MSNBC commentator himself told Glenn Greenwald when they duked it out on the air Friday on “Morning Joe.”

“I am a socialist,” O’Donnell said. “I live to the extreme left.”

Glenn Greenwald, a columnist for Salon.com, ran a column on Wednesday that attacked the election coverage by the news networks — criticizing O’Donnell’s commentary in particular.

“Ten minutes was the absolute maximum I could endure of any one television news outlet last night without having to switch channels in the futile search for something more bearable,” Greenwald wrote, “but almost every time I had MNSBC on, there was Lawrence O’Donnell trying to blame “the Left” and “liberalism” for the Democrats’ political woes.”

Greenwald said, “this ‘analysis’ is false,” citing the massive losses of seats by Blue Dog Democrats in the House.

The column didn’t go over well with O’Donnell, and the two went at it to such a degree that MSNBC altered its normal schedule to extend the segment.

“Glenn, Glenn, Glenn, Glenn, Glenn,” O’Donnell tut-tutted, as Greenwald began making the same argument as in his column, that “it wasn’t the liberals who lost,” but rather the more conservative Blue Dogs, “that’s the silliest thing you can say.”

“Why weren’t you on television pointing to the loss and saying that conservative Democrats cannot get re-elected when 50 percent of the Blue Dog caucus disappeared overnight?” Greenwald shot back. “Why were you pointing to the handful of liberals that lost as proof that liberalism failed?”

O’Donnell attacked Greenwald for misrepresenting what he had said, saying, “I asked questions, Glenn. Every single thing that you accused me of saying, I did not say.”

The argument went on to focus on labels, as both O’Donnell and Greenwald tried to affix a tag not only each other, but define just what political grouping it was that lost this election and what the Democrats should do in the aftermath.

The loss of so many Blue Dog seats, Greenwald insisted, meant that this election was not an attack on liberalism, but O’Donnell was unconvinced.

“Blue Dog dominance passed the most liberal health-care bill!” O’Donnell retorted.

O’Donnell attacked Greenwald for being a “progressive,” a label he had accepted earlier in the show.

“Unlike you, Glenn, I am not a progressive,” O’Donnell said somewhat condescendingly, “I’m not a liberal who is so afraid of the word that I had to change my name to progressive.”

All-Natural Chocolate Wafer Maker Moves Ahead With Mission to Reduce Carbon Footprint

Nyack, NY (PRWEB) December 4, 2010

Nyack, New York-based Q.bel Foods, LLC, makers of Q.bel™ all-natural chocolate candy wafer rolls and wafer bars, today announced that they are reducing the size of the display trays in their line of chocolate covered wafer rolls. The slight reduction in width, from 6½” to 6”, will have a significant positive impact on Q.bel’s customers and on the environment.

After the change, each case of Q.bel chocolate wafer rolls will use:     6% less paperboard (134.4 fewer square inches per master case)     6% less corrugated (58.5 fewer square inches per master case)     7% less cargo space (meaning 7% more can fit on a truckload, meaning 7% fewer road miles and 7% less fuel)     7.5% less shelf space     8% less shipping weight (even more fuel savings)

"The size of the package that shoppers actually buy isn’t changing at all,” said Bahram Shirazi, Founder and CEO of Q.bel. “It’s just that the tray that sits on a store shelf and holds the packages didn’t need to be quite as wide as it was originally made.Rather than live with excess packaging, we decided to reduce. It’s a win-win-win all around.”

The Q.bel product line was launched in January 2009, with an initial national rollout by Whole Foods Markets.Since that time, the product has been selected by many leading retailers in the health and natural foods industry. In less than two years, Q.bel has already sold over two million candy bars, attaining the number one rank in the “All-Natural Chocolate Wafer” category.
