Post n°9 pubblicato il 05 Dicembre 2010 da kazuyoqnmcjr

NEWARK, N.J. – P.J. Miller scored 12 points and New Jersey Institute of Technology defeated St. Joseph's (N.Y.) 65-57 on Saturday.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for NJIT (2-4).

The Highlanders led 36-19 at halftime, then built its largest lead of the game at 19 points early in the second half. St. Joseph's rallied by making 10 of 14 3-pointers in the second half to cut the lead to 61-57 in the final minute. But the Highlanders made all four of their free throw attempts in the final 47 seconds to secure the win.

NJIT won despite committing a season-high 24 turnovers.

St. Joseph's overcame a 23.3 percent (7 for 30) from the field in the first half to shoot 56.4 percent (13 for 23) in the following half in the losing effort.

The Bears (2-5), a Division III team, was led by Donald Coleman with 16 points. Thomas Karasinski added 13 points.

Jardine has 23, Syracuse beats NC State 65-59

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Scoop Jardine scored 23 points, Rick Jackson added 16, and No. 8 Syracuse shut down North Carolina State late and beat the Wolfpack 65-59 Saturday night.

North Carolina State (4-3) seemed poised for an upset after taking a six-point lead, but Syracuse clamped down in the final eight minutes, forcing two shot-clock violations and holding the Wolfpack without a basket for the final 7:20.

Syracuse (8-0) wasn't much better. Jackson's hook over freshman C.J. Leslie with 6:43 left was the Orange's last basket. It gave Syracuse a 59-58 lead, but the Orange held on despite missing three free throws in the final 2:08.

Scott Wood had 18 points, all on 3-pointers, and Leslie had 13 points and 11 rebounds off the bench to lead North Carolina State.

Kris Joseph had eight points for Syracuse and two key rebounds in the final 70 seconds.

Syracuse won despite shooting 38.3 percent and just 2 of 16 from beyond the arc. But the Orange had only five turnovers to 19 turnovers for the Wolfpack and that helped spell the difference.

Wood was 2 for 8 on 3-pointers in the second half after hitting 4 of 7 in the first, and the open looks he found early disappeared when the game was on the line. He missed three times from beyond the arc in the final minutes and committed a costly turnover.

With Syracuse clinging to a 61-59 lead after freshman center Baye Moussa Keita made one of two free throws with 2:08 left, Wood lost the ball out of bounds on the Wolfpack's next possession and missed a long 3 from the top of the key under pressure that would have tied the game at 62-all with 30 seconds left.

North Carolina State trailed the entire first half before surging ahead at the start of the second. After Jardine's driving layup tied it at 42 with 14:51 left, DeShawn Painter's soft hook off the glass and a 3-pointer from the right wing by Wood gave the Wolfpack a 51-45 lead with 12:17 left.

Syracuse pressed to rally. Jackson slammed home a dunk and his lob to Dion Waiters had the Orange back within 53-49, and the Orange slowly chipped away.

Entering the game, Javier Gonzalez and Wood had combined to hit 24 of 59 (40.7 percent) from beyond the arc, but the rest of the team was shooting 13.9 percent (5 of 36). Wood hit two 3s and Gonzalez drained another from the top of the key in the first 5 minutes of the game to help the Wolfpack keep pace.

Wood matched his season high from beyond the arc by hitting four 3s in the first half alone as he repeatedly broke free for open looks against the Orange's zone.

After jumpers by Brandon Triche and Jackson gave Syracuse a 31-18 lead with 8:31 left, Wood hit two straight 3s to key a 12-1 spurt that got the Wolfpack back in the game as Syracuse got careless, missing three shots and committing a turnover.

A dunk by Leslie and another by Ryan Harrow moved North Carolina State within 32-30 at 5:24. Syracuse led 38-34 at halftime.

The Wolfpack scored the first six points of the second half, taking their first lead of the game on Painter's first basket of the game, a hook in the lane just over 2 minutes in.

In its previous game, North Carolina State was humbled at Wisconsin, 87-48, on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Badgers held the Wolfpack without a point for more than 10 minutes straddling halftime and scored 23 straight points.

(x)tree: Build Awareness. Become a Branch in a Global Virtual Tree

Post n°7 pubblicato il 05 Dicembre 2010 da kazuyoqnmcjr

Tag: rose

At a time of year when trees are being cut down for the holiday season and tree cutting practices are endangering our ecological and cultural diversity, the (x)tree symbolizes how each of us can build awareness and make a small difference by contributing a “virtual seedling” and watching it grow, reminding us of the simplicity and beauty of tree planting.

El Prado, NM (PRWEB) December 3, 2010

A unique collaborative event is taking place that takes the traditional holiday tree to another dimension. The (x)tree, as it’s called, is a dynamic visualization of a tree-form generated by individuals sending messages from *social networks and mobile devices.A large scale projection of the (X)tree will be part of the Ledoux Street Celebration in Taos, a world-famous destination for skiing and art. Agnes Chavez, founder of STEMArts () and creator of the (x)tree collaboration, says “In order for the tree to come alive and start growing, virtually, people from all over the world can just send a twitter message including the exact code term"#(x)tree"(without quotations). Each tweet generates a branch, tweet by tweet, person by person, "growing" the algorithmic holiday tree."

“The (x)tree is "grown" from the intention of individuals” Chavez says, “it represents the way we are all connected, not only through communication systems, but biologically as part of a living system.” (x)tree NM is a STEMArts () and Santa Fe Complex benefit for Tree NM.

Tree NM, an organization based in Albuquerque, NM reached their millionth tree planted in March 2007 through community partnerships and educational outreach. They are now embarking on the “One million more” campaign and the (x)tree project hopes to raise awareness and money toward their goal.To participate in the tree planting drive you can visit the Tree NM site () donate $5.00 to Tree NM, and have a real seedling planted in your name or as a gift for a friend or family member. The project will continue after the event as (x)tree will be transferred to a website, where people can continue to send their messages and support the Tree NM- tree planting drive.

Chavez says, "A reality of social networking is that, like in real relationships, it evolves over time. I am seeing the (x)tree as a year long collaboration with the inauguration of the (x)tree happening for the Lighting of Ledoux 2010 and its completion in 2011 for next years' Ledoux Lighting. Throughout the year Chavez plans to project it in different countries that she visits, and will also keep expanding the way people can participate (SMS, Facebook, etc.) The tree planting organization that collaborates for fundraising will also change according to state/country. Anyone interested in bringing the (x)tree to their city or country can contact Chavez directly at learn(at)sube(dot)com

Send a simple tweet message and become a branch in the global virtual tree while helping to raise awareness to tree planting worldwide. For example,. "This holiday season, I'm building awareness with #(x)tree" - Please retweet! To participate through Facebook and text messaging visitto find out when that feature will be added.

To see the live projection of the (x)tree come to Taos New Mexico for the Annual Lighting of Ledoux on December 11, 2010 5-7pm.Stroll to the top of Ledoux street, 203 Ledoux, by 7pm and watch the (x)tree stream your tweets live from the internet, on to the facade of a historic adobe building.

Lawyer: Ga. soldier in shooting was on strict diet

Post n°6 pubblicato il 09 Settembre 2010 da kazuyoqnmcjr

FORT McPHERSON, Ga. – A soldier was fasting to meet strict military weight guidelines and nearly catatonic when he shot and killed a supervisor who denied his vacation request, his attorney said Monday.

Attorney William Cassara said Army Reserve Sgt. Rashad Valmont was dehydrated, exhausted and delirious when he burst into Master Sgt. Pedro Mercado's office in nearby Fort Gillem in June and shot him six times.

Valmont, 29, faces a premeditated murder charge. The details of the shooting were revealed for the first time Monday at a military hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial. No immediate recommendation was issued.

The military routinely requires soldiers to pass physical tests and meet body-fat requirements to be eligible for promotions and advanced training courses.

But Cassara said another sergeant, Tracy Mosley, ordered Valmont to lose an additional 3 percent beyond the minimum body fat requirements to attend a course he had long sought. He said his client spent weeks trying body wraps and sauna treatments and starving himself to meet the standards.

"He showed some form of diminished capacity, some sort of delirium in the days and hours leading up to this incident," Cassara said. "He was in a near-catatonic state, a near trance. And after being belittled, humiliated and berated ... you're on this crash course."

Mosley said she set the higher standard because she wanted to make sure Valmont succeeded in the demanding course.

Prosecutors said he had long frustrated his superiors and was known around the base as a lazy worker who frequently showed up to work late. The week of the killings, Mosley gave him a bad review because he arrived to work two hours late and then was tardy to a fitness examination.

Valmont demanded to see one of her bosses, Mercado, who went over his case file "line by excruciating line," said Capt. Sean Sullivan, a military prosecutor. Valmont angrily accused Mercado of being a liar, and the master sergeant denied his vacation request and threatened to seek more disciplinary action.

The next morning, Valmont surprised his co-workers by showing up before his 7 a.m. start time. Witnesses described him as sullen, and a mentor told investigators he tried to calm Valmont and encourage him to apologize to Mercado.

It didn't go smoothly.

Mercado, according to prosecutors, told Valmont: "When you called me a liar, it feels like you shot me."

Witnesses said Valmont stared blankly at his computer screen much of the rest of the day, until he pulled a Glock pistol from his backpack and calmly walked into Mercado's office around 5 p.m.

Sullivan said Valmont raised his left hand and fired six shots at Mercado, who crumpled to the floor.

After emerging from the office, prosecutors said he shouted that he was tired of Mercado giving him a hard time and then sought out Mosley, who said she fled at the sound of gunfire. When he couldn't find her, he hopped in his car and drove to the nearby Lake City Police Department to turn himself in.

Cassara noted that one of the first things he requested was a bite to eat "because he hadn't eaten in days." Prosecutors, however, said the shooting was not a gut reaction but rather a carefully planned outburst.

"This has been a thorough and complete investigation, and evidence points to one thing — this was a cold-blooded, premeditated murder," Sullivan said. "He felt like he had no other choice but to do something drastic, to use that Glock he had in his backpack."

Troops fire on protesters in Kashmir, 3 killed

Post n°5 pubblicato il 07 Settembre 2010 da kazuyoqnmcjr

SRINAGAR, India – Government forces fired on protesters hurling stones at them in Indian Kashmir on Monday, killing three people and wounding at least 17 other demonstrators, police said.

For the last three months, the mostly Muslim Kashmir region has been roiled by demonstrations and clashes between protesters opposed to Indian rule and government forces. The deaths bring to 68 the number of people killed in the civil unrest.

Three people, including a 17-year-old boy, were killed when government forces fired live ammunition to disperse protesters in Palhalan, a village north of Srinagar, Indian Kashmir's main city, said a police officer. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release information to the media.

Local residents said there was no clash with the troops, but soldiers fired when the protesters refused to disperse. The state government has ordered a probe into the shooting incident.

"A clash had occurred near a highway in the morning and much after that we were peacefully protesting in the village," said resident Meraj-ud-Din.

Later, as news of the shooting spread, thousands of people from Palhalan and neighboring villages chanting "Go India, go back" and "We want freedom" marched to a nearby highway and blocked it.

Police and paramilitary soldiers fired warning shots and tear gas to quell those protests, said the officer. There were no reports of injuries.

Police launched a probe into Monday's shooting. "Senior police officers have taken a serious view of the firing. Ammunition of the policemen is being checked to fix the responsibility," an official statement said.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmir, which is divided between India and Pakistan and claimed by both. Protesters reject Indian sovereignty over Kashmir and want independence or a merger with Pakistan.

The recent civil unrest is reminiscent of the late 1980s, when protests against New Delhi's rule in Kashmir sparked an armed conflict that has so far killed more than 68,000 people, mostly civilians.

Meanwhile, an Indian army spokesman said Monday that three suspected rebels were killed in an exchange of gunfire in a remote forest in northern Handwara district of Kashmir.

No casualties were reported among the Indian soldiers, Lt. Col. J.S. Brar said in Srinagar.

There was no independent confirmation of the army's claim.
