Si tratta di un canto tradizionale ucraino, dedicato alla stagione invernale, che racconta la storia di una rondine che entra in una casa per annunciare l'anno prospero che si preannuncia alla famiglia. In Ucraina la canzone viene cantata alla vigilia del nuovo anno (che secondo il calandario giuliano cade il nostro 13 di gennaio).Secondo una tradizione popolare la canzone sarebbe basata su una leggenda slava che dice che la notte di Natale ognbi campana nel mondo suona in onore della nascita del Salvatore. Il canto attuale venen tradotto in inglese nel 1936 da Peter Wilhousky per una radio americana e nonostante la sua indubbia difficoltà musicale raggiunse subito il successo, certo per le suggestioni uditive che sa suscitare.
