NEW YORK – Henrik Lundqvist knocked Anze Kopitar's shootout shot over the net to earn his 200th NHL win and give the Rangers a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.

The Kings rallied twice in the third period to stretch their streak with at least one point to a team record-tying 11 games (8-0-3).

Erik Christensen and Mats Zuccarello scored on the Rangers' first two shootout attempts before Jarret Stoll got a shot past Lundqvist to send the tiebreaker into a third round. Jonathan Bernier poke-checked the puck off Wojtek Wolski's stick to keep the Kings alive, but Lundqvist turned aside Kopitar to give New York its second straight win after six consecutive losses.

Ryan Callahan had a goal and assist, and Marian Gaborik and Brandon Dubinsky both scored in the third for New York.

Mendis, Perera fire S.Lanka to win over W.Indies

Post n°15 pubblicato il 08 Febbraio 2011 da nmdipahozy

COLOMBO (AFP) – Ajantha Mendis and Thisara Perera shared seven wickets as Sri Lanka posted a 26-run win over the West Indies in the third one-day international on Sunday to clinch the series 2-0.

Sri Lanka showed the depth of their bowling line-up by defending their total of 277-9 and restricting the tourists to 251 despite resting attack spearheads Lasith Malinga, Muttiah Muralitharan and Nuwan Kulasekara for the match.

Unorthodox spinner Mendis finished with 4-46 and seamer Perera with 3-36, while paceman Dilhara Fernando took 2-45.

Sri Lanka won the second match by eight wickets after the opening game was abandoned due to rain.

Perera strengthened his team's position when he removed well-set Darren Bravo (79) and skipper Darren Sammy (three) in the space of five balls.

Mendis took the last three wickets, including that of Carlton Baugh, to complete the win, depriving Baugh (49) of his maiden half-century in one-day internationals.

Darren Bravo sustained his team's hopes with a 125-run stand for the third wicket with Ramnaresh Sarwan (51) after openers Chris Gayle and Adrian Barath had fallen with no runs on the board.

Gayle was bowled first ball by Fernando, while Barath was caught behind in Perera's opening over.

Darren Bravo and Sarwan applied themselves well to keep the Sri Lankan attack at bay for more than 22 overs, playing some attractive shots during their partnership.

The West Indies wobbled after the dismissal of Sarwan, trapped leg-before by left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, as they lost four wickets in the space 34 runs, including those of Darren Bravo and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (three).

Darren Bravo fell leg-before to Perera after cracking one six and nine fours in a 91-ball knock, his highest in 13 one-dayers.

Man-of-the-match Sangakkara earlier made a solid 75 to help his side set a challenging target despite Sulieman Benn's maiden four-wicket haul.

Left-arm spinner Benn grabbed 4-38 off 10 tight overs to reduce Sri Lanka to 244-8 from a healthy 205-3, but Angelo Mathews smashed an unbeaten 36 off 22 balls to help the hosts plunder 27 in the last two overs.

Sri Lanka made a brisk start after being put in to bat as openers Upul Tharanga (39) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (30) made 54 runs for the first wicket.

Benn got his first wicket when he bowled Tharanga, but former skipper Mahela Jayawardene gave Sangakkara valuable support to steady the innings with a 95-run stand for the third wicket.

The Sri Lankan captain cracked one six and four boundaries in his 105-ball knock before being bowled by Benn, who then accounted for Chamara Kapugedera and Thilan Samaraweera.

Cow that escaped slaughterhouse has new adventure

Post n°13 pubblicato il 06 Febbraio 2011 da nmdipahozy

BILLINGS, Mont. – Five years after a cow dubbed the "Unsinkable Molly B" leapt a slaughterhouse gate and swam across the Missouri River in an escape that drew international attention, the heifer has again eluded fate, surviving the collapse of the animal sanctuary where she was meant to retire.

Molly B was among an estimated 1,200 animals removed from the Montana Large Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in recent weeks as part of a massive effort to bail out its overwhelmed owners.

Animal welfare groups said they were forced to euthanize dozens of starving and ill cattle, horses and llamas found on the 400-acre sanctuary in rural Sanders County.

The bovine celebrity herself - an overweight black Angus breed said to be sore in the hoof but otherwise relatively healthy - was removed to a nearby ranch and is headed this week to a smaller farm sanctuary.

"Molly B made it OK. She's a tough old broad," said Jerry Finch with Habitat for Horses of Hitchcock, Texas, who participated in the rescue effort. "She had bad feet, but she was not anywhere near as bad as some of the others."

Molly B's relocation to a 20-acre ranchette known as the New Dawn MT Sanctuary has proven an adventure in its own right. Local media stories had trumpeted her arrival at the Stevensville facility last week, including photos said to be of Molly B and new friend "Misty."

Yet when New Dawn owner Susan Eakins watched one of the reports on the nightly news, video of the cow climbing a hill revealed the sanctuary had gotten the wrong animal - a male steer named "Big Mike." A mix-up left Molly B behind on another ranch.

Her home since 2006, near the small town of Hot Springs, in recent years had grown into a sort of Noah's Ark-gone-wild - more than 600 llamas; at least 100 horses, donkeys and cattle; and a motley assortment of bison, camels, exotic rodents and other furry and feathered beasts.

Many of the animals were breeding. Rescuers said that allowed the sanctuary population to multiply unchecked, setting the stage for conditions to deteriorate rapidly after one of the facility's two full-time employees fell ill last year. As the situation worsened, word circulated among animal rescue groups across the country.

Patty Finch with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries said by the time she called the Montana facility in late November to offer help, many of its animals were sick, dying or struggling to survive in increasingly cramped quarters.

"Molly is a good representative of what a betrayal it was to each of these animals. The sanctuary should be a line in the sand that means never again should you suffer," said Patty Finch, who said e has no relation to Jerry Finch.

Molly B's second retirement will start another chapter in an unlikely story that began January 2006, when a yet-to-be-named 1,200 pound heifer skipped her date with doom by leaping a 5-foot-5-inch fence at Mickey's Packing Plant in Great Falls.

The cow raced through town with police and animal control on her heels, reportedly running into a conflict with a German Shepherd, dodging an SUV and negotiating through a rail yard. She swam across the Missouri River and later took three tranquilizer darts before eventually getting corralled.

Mickey's Packing Plant employees christened the spirited cow Molly B and voted 10-1 to spare her from slaughter.

A less formal vote on Molly B's fate came out in her favor this weekend. New Dawn owner Eakins said after a heart-to-heart with her husband over whether they could afford to take another cow into their 50-animal operation, the couple decided to make it work. "We made a commitment to her," Eakins said.

Neb chancellor: Petulant Pelini to get talking-to

Post n°12 pubblicato il 22 Novembre 2010 da nmdipahozy

OMAHA, Neb. – Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman isn't happy with coach Bo Pelini's behavior.

Perlman told The Associated Press on Sunday that Pelini's verbal assault of officials during Saturday's game at Texas A&M did not reflect well on the university or the football program.

"I think it was very unfortunate," Perlman said, "and I think it's something we'll have to address with Bo."

The game was televised on ABC, and Perlman said he felt uneasy about the numerous camera shots of Pelini's outbursts. Perlman spoke Sunday morning with athletic director Tom Osborne about Pelini's conduct, and the chancellor said he, Osborne or both would talk to Pelini about his decorum.

Perlman wouldn't speculate on whether disciplinary action would be taken.

"Bo has a lot of passion for his football team," Perlman said, "and there is a strong upside to that. But again, overall, the conduct was unfortunate last night."

Pelini declined to comment Sunday.

The Cornhuskers were penalized 16 times for 145 yards in the 9-6 loss. Pelini was seen yelling at officials after many of the penalties, and he was called for unsportsmanlike conduct early in the fourth quarter.

Pelini also was seen ripping into quarterback Taylor Martinez, who was standing on the sideline after receiving treatment for an aggravation of his right ankle sprain.

After the game, Pelini declined to comment on the reason for his confrontation with Martinez. The redshirt freshman showed no emotion as the coach yelled at him, pointed his left index finger at him and poked him just above the collar. Perlman said he doesn't know why Pelini became unhinged at Martinez.

"There is a part of the culture of intercollegiate athletics that involves coaches talking strongly to players," Perlman said. "That's unfortunate it had to happen on national television. I think that probably occurs in a lot of programs."

According to media reports, Pelini chased after referee Greg Burks before shaking hands with Aggies coach Mike Sherman.

Pelini has a well-earned reputation for being rough on officials, but he seemed to show a higher level of volatility Saturday night. The Huskers needed to win to clinch the Big 12 North title.

Asked whether he or Osborne had spoken with Pelini in the past about toning down his sideline demeanor, Perlman said, "I'm not going to comment on that."

Big 12 spokesman Bob Burda said he didn't know whether the conference would have grounds to take disciplinary action against Pelini.

Messages were left for Osborne on his home and cell phones.
