National Cancer Institute Sponsored Study To Evaluate Cholesterol Drug’s Ability to Prevent Colon Cancer

Post n°15 pubblicato il 03 Aprile 2011 da ohvcunfmp

s Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) will evaluate the cholesterol lowering drug Rosuvastatin (Crestor) for its potential to reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Pittsburgh, PA (Vocus/PRWEB) March 31, 2011

A new National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored study being launched this week at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) will evaluate the cholesterol lowering drug Rosuvastatin (Crestor) for its potential to reduce the risk of colon cancer.

AGH is one of 200 North American medical centers participating in thestudy, which is being led by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP).

Rosuvastatin is one of a class of commonly prescribed drugs that lower cholesterol. The new study was developed by the NSABP in response to previous research conducted in large populations of patients taking statins that suggest the drug may also inhibit the growth of colon polyps.Colon polyps can lead to colon cancer if left untreated.

The study will involve 1,740 patients who have recently been diagnosed with early stage colon cancer and who are not already taking statins for high cholesterol.Patients will be randomly assigned to receive either Rosuvastatin or a placebo. Each group will take one pill a day for five years.

“An estimated 102,900 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year.It is the third most common cancer found in men and women. As we celebrate Colon Cancer Awareness Month in March, we hope this clinical trial will be an important step towards reducing these numbers in the future,” said Norman Wolmark, MD, Chairman of the both the NSABP and AGH’s Department of Human Oncology.

“The possibility of an oral medication that reduces the risk of colon cancer is an extremely exciting idea. The impressive scope of this new clinical trial will provide us with a much more definitive understanding of the preventative benefit statin drugs may offer in the setting of this prevalent and deadly disease,” said Thomas B. Julian, MD, a surgical oncologist and the study’s Principal Investigator at AGH.

People recently diagnosed with a Stage I or II colon cancer and interested in the study should contact AGH at 412.359.6464.A list of other sites in North America that are participating in the study may be found at the

Since its beginning more than 50 years ago, NSABP has enrolled more than 140,000 women and men in clinical trials in breast and colorectal cancer.NSABP has research sites at major medical centers, university hospitals, large oncology practice groups, and health maintenance organizations in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, Australia and Ireland. At those sites and their satellites, more than 5,000 physicians, nurses and other medical professionals conduct NSABP treatment and prevention studies.

Franklin dances, sings at 69th birthday party

Post n°14 pubblicato il 03 Aprile 2011 da ohvcunfmp

Aretha Franklin proved her voice is still divine at 69 as she gave a brief but rousing performance at a swank birthday party in her honor.

Tony Bennett, Smokey Robinson, music mogul Clive Davis, Bette Midler and Gayle King were among the celebrities on hand to pay tribute to the Queen of Soul on Friday night at a late-night birthday party at a Central Park Hotel.

"It's a fabulous moment," said Franklin, showing off her noticeably thinner frame in a flowing white and gold gown as she sat at a table with several gifts.

Bennett, who called Franklin "one of a kind" was one of those who came with a present — and his was unique.

"I also paint, so she knows about that," he said. "A long time ago, she said, 'I'd love to have you do a painting of me,' and I remembered that, and when I heard I was coming here, I just knocked off a quick sketch tonight and gave it to her tonight."

More than 100 friends and family gathered to celebrate Franklin, who just a few months ago underwent surgery for an ailment she has declined to disclose. In recent weeks, she's made more public appearances and is set to resume her stage performances in May. At the party, Franklin seemed full of energy, greeting guests and dancing to the music.

Franklin wasn't billed as the evening's entertainment. Instead, she had other acclaimed musicians on hand to perform for her: jazz musician Roy Ayers, singer Nnenna Freelon, and Tito Puente Jr. all gave mini-concerts at the soiree.

But after former Temptations frontman Dennis Edwards serenaded her with a couple of riveting songs, she joined him and they both sang "The Way We Were."

Afterward, Edwards and the crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to Franklin, and she cut her birthday cake.

The Detroit native planned to stay in New York for at least a day more, but don't expect much more celebrating for Franklin.

"I will be in a horizontal position tomorrow, all day!" she said.

Letters galore about NFL labor negotiations

Post n°13 pubblicato il 16 Febbraio 2011 da ohvcunfmp

Tag: forse4

WASHINGTON – Both sides in the NFL's labor talks are trying to spread the word by putting their positions in writing, and everyone's getting in on the act — from Hall of Fame players Jack Youngblood and Bruce Smith, to Commissioner Roger Goodell, to mayors of league cities.

In a letter obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday, Youngblood and Smith asked NFL owners to promise not to lock out players even if a new collective bargaining agreement isn't reached by the time the current one expires at the end of the day March 3.

Youngblood was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001, Smith in 2009. Their letter was addressed to "Owners of the National Football League" and sent Jan. 31 to Goodell at league headquarters in New York.

"As former players, it is crystal clear that the vast popularity and financial success of football means that a lock out cannot be in the interest of anybody involved, particularly the fans who support the game," Youngblood and Smith wrote. "We understand the need for both sides to create pressure, but also know that at times it is important to decrease tenor and tone in order for the right deal to be made in a non-emotional atmosphere."

They noted that the players' union already "pledged to not strike."

"By making the parallel commitment," they wrote, "the owners would create the breathing room for a deal to be struck."

That exact wording also was used in a Feb. 7 letter from Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Mark Funkhouser to Clark Hunt, the owner and chief executive officer of that city's NFL team, the Chiefs. Indeed, Funkhouser's two-paragraph letter to Hunt uses phrases throughout that echo the letter to Goodell from Youngblood and Smith.

Mayors or city officials from at least five sites of NFL teams have written letters to the league or a club official to argue against a lockout.

Goodell, meanwhile, indicated in an op-ed piece that the 2011 regular season could be in jeopardy if the league and union don't start "serious negotiations" toward a new CBA soon.

"The hard work to secure the next NFL season must now accelerate in earnest," Goodell wrote in the piece, which has been run by more than 30 newspapers or websites since last week and was posted Tuesday on NFLlabor.com.

He said he "cannot emphasize enough the importance of reaching agreement by" the expiration of the old CBA.

Goodell also said owners need more money to offset "costs of financing, building, maintaining and operating stadiums." He added: "We need new stadiums in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Oakland and San Diego."

And in yet another letter, the advocacy group Sports Fan Coalition wrote Tuesday to the NFL and union, asking that its leadership be allowed to listen in on bargaining sessions between the sides.

"We are not asking for a seat at the negotiating table — although we believe fans deserve one — but merely to be present in the room," the letter said, "so that we may inform fans across the country about the state of ongoing negotiations and ensure that progress is being made towards an agreement that ensures a central consideration of fans."

The biggest issue separating the owners and players is how to divide about $9 billion in annual revenues. Under the old deal, the owners receive $1 billion off the top, and they want to increase that to $2 billion before players get their share.

Among the other significant points in negotiations: the owners' push to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18 while reducing the preseason by two games; a rookie wage scale; and benefits for retired players.

The NFL and union went more than two months without holding any formal bargaining sessions, until a meeting Feb. 5, the day before the Super Bowl. The sides met again once last week but called off a second meeting that had been scheduled for the following day.

The most recent deal was signed in 2006, but owners exercised an opt-out clause in 2008.

Innerhofer wins super-G, Miller 12th at worlds

Post n°11 pubblicato il 09 Febbraio 2011 da ohvcunfmp

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany – Christof Innerhofer of Italy mastered a bumpy course to win the super-G at the world championships for his first major title, while Bode Miller lost a pole and finished 12th.

Hannes Reichelt of Austria was second and overall World Cup leader Ivica Kostelic of Croatia was third.

Defending champion Didier Cuche of Switzerland missed the podium and finished fourth, while Olympic champion Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway failed to finish.

Miller, the Olympic silver medalist, clipped a gate with his arm and lost a pole. He maintained a fast pace and was nearly a full second ahead of the 10 previous racers. But he lost his balance coming out of a bend at the bottom, slowed down and stood up as he crossed the finish line.

"I tried to push on the top, but I hooked my arm pretty hard," Miller said. "I made the recovery but then I lost my balance. I skied like I wanted on the top. But it's a matter of finishing without making mistakes."

His run inspired Innerhofer.

"I saw Bode Miller and I told myself that's how I had to race, too," he said. "Simply give your best, then you can't reproach yourself at the finish."

Innerhofer has only one World Cup victory to date — a downhill in Bormio in Italy in December 2008 — but he beat Reichelt by a massive 0.60 seconds, finishing in 1 minute, 38.31 seconds. Reichelt, who won the super-G race on Saturday, clocked 1:38.91. Kostelic finished in 1:39.03.

"These races come only once every two years, so I knew I had to go all out today," Innerhofer said. "You can't make any sort of calculations. The course is incredible and exhausting, but I managed to keep things under control."

Miller said skiing without the pole didn't seem to make much of a difference. He likely would have broken into the top 10 if he had not crossed the line in a leisurely fashion.

"It was difficult. It was challenging. But that's how it should be. It's the world championships. It's a pretty tame hill. It's really basic," Miller said. "But today it was bumpy enough and fast enough to make it challenging. You see a lot of guys having problems and if you see Innerhofer skiing, he really deserves to win here. He was one of the few guys really pushing and really taking some risk."

Ted Ligety of the United States, who went off the course, said running early was more difficult.

"A couple of turns you get some sun," Ligety said. "Just in general it's in the shade all the way down and that makes it tough when it's that bumpy."

Although his World Cup career includes only three other third-place finishes, Innerhofer had come close to winning medals at the last two major events. At 26, Innerhofer has been seen as one of the leaders in a fairly young Italian speed team, although he has been slowed by injuries.

He missed the podium at the world championships two years ago by finishing 0.05 seconds behind bronze medalist Svindal. And he was sixth at the Vancouver Olympics last year, only 0.08 seconds away from the bronze.

Innerhofer is one of the most outgoing members of the team, hailing from the German-speaking Alto Adige region. He jumped onto the top of the podium during the victory celebration.

"What I'm most pleased about is that I was able to attack from top to bottom, which is something I haven't been able to do very often this season. When I crossed the line and looked at the scoreboard I didn't believe it at first. I had to look again to be sure," he said.

"This is the dream for any athlete, and for me to get my first super-G win at the worlds is unbelievable. I can't believe it. Already for a few days I've been telling myself, 'Christof, you've got to risk everything in this race, because you don't have anything to lose. You've got to risk, risk, risk, otherwise you're going to be angry with yourself.'"

Reichelt said he was surprised with his second-place finish.

"Normally, these are not my conditions," Reichelt said. "I thought I'd skied a lousy race. The uneven, icy piste was extremely difficult, at some points it was really twilight. I got tired quickly and I could hardly stay upright at the end."

Erik Guay of Canada, who won the super-G race and the World Cup title in the event on the same slope last year, also failed to finish.
