N.J. Gov. Christie Road Trips to Attract Businesses

Post n°10 pubblicato il 09 Febbraio 2011 da ohvcunfmp

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, has swapped insults with Illinois and Maryland's Democrat governors over which state is the most business-friendly. But this weekend he put his money where his mouth is by paying for a trip to Chicago during which he attempted to lure major corporations to New Jersey.

At a press conference at the New Jersey State House in Trenton today, thereported that Christie claimed to have "one major lead," following his trip. When asked about whether he felt badly about trying to lure away jobs from another state to New Jersey, Christie said that he felt no guilt, and continued to allude to future tax cuts for businesses.

Christie declined to name the business that showed interest in New Jersey, or the names of the other businesses that he met with during his two-day trip. One business, though, made it clear that they were not interested in relocating to the Garden State.reported that Kraft spokesman Michael Mitchell said that, "We received an invitation to meet with the governor, but schedules were simply not conducive to a meeting at this time."

Christie's visit to Illinois coincided with recent tax rate hikes for both individuals and businesses in Illinois. Last month, Illinois Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn signed a whopping 67 percent tax increase. Christie has even taken out print and radio advertisements in major Illinois cities Chicago and Springfield that repeat his promise to not raise taxes in New Jersey.

The Star-Ledger has reported the Christie was elated upon hearing about the Illinois tax rate increases, saying, "I'll go and try to collect as many businesses as I can. And every job that I create, that I take from Illinois, which comes to New Jersey, will be a net plus for us."

Former New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio has suggested that behind Christie's brash statements is a hefty dash of good timing, saying to thethat, "I think one of the things Gov. Christie has going for him is the fact that we're at least coming out of a very strong recession."

Because Christie is at the helm at a time when the economy is naturally going to expand following a recession, he may be able to ride that wave to re-election as Governor or even the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Thereported that the advertisements were followed with letters sent by the New Jersey lieutenant governor, Kim Guadagno, to 553 different Illinois-based businesses of varying sizes who will be affected by the recent tax increases, however neither Christie nor Guadagno has said how many of those businesses were open to meeting with Christie during his recent trip.

Currently, New Jersey's business tax rate is 9 percent compared to Illinois's 9.5 percent, but thanks to other laws and their lower personal income tax rate, Illinois still ranks above New Jersey on the . New Jersey is currently considered the 48th worst tax climate for businesses, followed only by New York and California, while thenoted that the recent rate increases in Illinois would move the state into 36th place.

Meanwhile, the noted that Christie's war of words with Maryland's Governor Martin O'Malley led O'Malley to snipe, "Gov. Christie has avoided the tough choices all governors face by making drastic cuts to schools, resorting to fiscal gimmicks like skipping pension payments, and putting New Jersey at a disadvantage for creating jobs and opportunity."

Ford recalling F-150 pickups to fix door handles

Post n°9 pubblicato il 08 Febbraio 2011 da ohvcunfmp

WASHINGTON – Ford Motor Co. recalled nearly 365,000 F-150 pickup trucks in North America on Thursday to fix a problem with the interior door handles that could lead to the doors opening in a crash.

Ford said the recall affects about 280,000 F-150s in the U.S. from the 2009 and 2010 model years built from Jan. 18, 2008, through Nov. 30, 2009. About 68,000 of the popular trucks under recall are in Canada and about 14,000 are in Mexico.

The Dearborn, Mich., company said there have been no crashes or injuries tied to the problem. The F-150 is part of Ford's popular F-Series pickup, the best-selling vehicle in the U.S.

"Ford is committed to safety and is quickly working to address this matter with our customers," said Wes Sherwood, a company spokesman.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its website that a spring in the interior door handle could break, causing the door to fail to latch properly. If the truck was struck by another vehicle on the side, the government said the door latch could open.

The recall is expected to begin around Feb. 14. Ford said dealers would inspect the trucks and add reinforcements to the spring or replace the side interior door handle module.

Owners can contact Ford at (866) 436-7332.

George W. Bush Decides Not to Go to Switzerland After All

Post n°8 pubblicato il 07 Febbraio 2011 da ohvcunfmp

WASHINGTON, DC – Former President George W. Bush was scheduled to go to Switzerland next week, but the trip has been called off. Bush was supposed to give an address in Geneva, on February 12, at a charity dinner in honor of the United Israel Appeal. Human rights groups were planning to protest his appearance, though, and several organizations had threatened to take legal action against Bush for allegedlyduring his time in office. The official statement is that Bush canceled his trip because the Geneva demonstrations were threatening to become violent, but onlookers are wondering whether the possibility of a criminal investigation may have played a role in deterring the president.

The Players  One of the groups most critical of Bush has been the Center for Constitutional Rights, a New York non-profit. According to , the CCR, along with "several European human rights groups," was urging Swiss authorities to "open a criminal case" against Bush once he arrived in Switzerland. The CCR reportedly has a 2,500-page complaint ready to go, and will release it at a news conference on Monday. A statement from the Center reads, "Whatever Bush or his hosts say, we have no doubt he canceled his trip to avoid our case ... The message from civil society is clear: If you're a torturer, be careful in your travel plans. It's a slow process for accountability, but we keep going."

But Does Bush Just Want to Prevent Violent Protests?  According to the United Israel Appeal, Bush is taking a rain check on Geneva not because he's scared of a lawsuit, but because "the calls to demonstrate were sliding into dangerous terrain," in the words of a lawyer for the organization, and "we didn't want to put people and property in Geneva at risk." The Post reports that "organizers of a rally outside the Hotel Wilson, where the speech was scheduled to take place, had called on demonstrators to each bring a shoe, an effort to echo the assault on Bush during a news conference in Baghdad in 2008 when an Iraqi journalist threw a shoe at him."

Would They Even Be Able to Arrest Him?  Not according to a spokesman for the Swiss Foreign Ministry, who told reporters that Bush "would have immunity from prosecution for any alleged actions while in office," as the Post puts it. The Post also notes that similar gambits in the past didn't pan out so well: "The Center, and its European partners, earlier filed suits against former defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other Bush administration officials in Germany and France. Those cases were dismissed."

Groups: Sure We Would!  The CCR and its allies seem pretty confident of their case, arguing that immunity doesn't apply under the Convention Against Torture.quotes Reed Brody, a lawyer for Human Rights Watch, who says that Bush is "avoiding the handcuffs... I'm surprised he would even consider visiting a country that has ratified the torture convention and which takes its responsibilities seriously." Brody adds that Bush "may enjoy some kind of impunity in the United States, but other countries will not treat him so indulgently."

Bush Is Thinking of the UIA, Not Himself  Where the CCR sees a defensive maneuver, Hot Air'ssees selflessness. "In the end, the most damage would not have been done to Bush, but to the charitable organization trying to conduct their fundraising," the blogger writes. "It appears that this was taken into consideration and the former president chose not to hamper their work by canceling the trip entirely."

Protip for Bush: Invest in a Wig  "Clearly George W. Bush is going to need to either A) stay in Texas forever or B) grow a mustache," jokes the blogger . "Maybe if he had a hat or something. Or a book. Nobody would ever recognize him if he was wearing a beret and holding a copy of Anna Karenina. It would be the perfect disguise! 'That can't be him, he's holding Tolstoy!'"

N.Koreans arrive by boat, not refugees: Seoul

Post n°7 pubblicato il 07 Febbraio 2011 da ohvcunfmp

SEOUL (AFP) – Thirty-one North Koreans crossed the tense Yellow Sea border by boat and arrived in South Korea but they have not so far expressed any wish to defect, the defence ministry in Seoul said Monday.

A spokesman, confirming a report in Dong-A Ilbo newspaper, said the South's navy on Saturday detained the five-ton boat about 1.6 miles (2.5 km) south of the disputed border.

Officials were interrogating the group, the spokesman told AFP. "None of them has yet expressed an intention to defect."

The incident off the frontline island of Yeonpyeong comes at a sensitive time as the two Koreas prepare for their first talks since the North's deadly shelling of the island in November.

The 11 men and 20 women arrived off the island in thick fog and were towed to the western port city of Incheon, Yonhap news agency quoted a military official as saying.

The official described them as members of a work group and not family members. There were no children on board.

"Given the circumstances so far, they might have been drifting after setting the wrong coordinates or losing power on their boat," another official was quoted as saying.

The contested Yellow Sea border has been a persistent flashpoint. The North's shelling of Yeonpyeong, which killed two marines and two civilians, briefly sparked fears of war.

The two sides will hold preliminary military talks Tuesday to try to ease months of tensions.

On December 25, a North Korean crossed the border by boat and landed on Baengnyeong, another frontline island. He was allowed last month to return to the North after expressing a wish to do so.

More than 20,000 North Koreans have arrived in South Korea since the end of the 1950-53 war, mostly via China.

Q&A with CNN Worldwide president

Post n°6 pubblicato il 07 Febbraio 2011 da ohvcunfmp

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – As president of CNN Worldwide, Jim Walton oversees the news operation's television, online and mobile businesses around the world.

A day after CNN's parent company Time Warner reported its latest earnings, Walton spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the cable network's 2010 financials, the early performance of Piers Morgan Tonight and the importance of U.S. primetime show.

The Hollywood Reporter: CNN had a record operating profit in 2009, and I hear you brought in another record profit for 2010. Is that true, and how big was it?

Jim Walton: We had a really good year in 2010. We had a fantastic year, and yes, we grew up profits over 2009. It was another earnings record, so we are really pleased...I am speaking about the worldwide business of CNN.

THR: How big a profit?

Walton: As you know, Time Warner doesn't break out our earnings, so I am not allowed to either. I can't.

THR: That is several record years in a row, isn't it?

Walton: That is seven years in a row of profit growth. That's pretty good. While the journalism industry is under siege, we continue to grow.

THR: What were the main drivers of your growth?

Walton: There are a lot of men and women here who work really hard. We have a pretty diverse business that is spread out around the world. And we got multiple revenue streams - television, the Web and mobile. It's not one television network. It's a big old honking news machine.

THR: The continued profit growth seems to be in some contrast with your continued U.S. primetime ratings challenges that are often in focus. Is that just not as important a factor?

Walton: I don't want to minimize it. The primetime programming on CNN U.S. is very, very important, and those ratings are important to us. But the ad revenue generated by our primetime programming on CNN U.S. is only about 10% of our total revenues. We have other parts of our business that are as big or bigger than that.

THR: What were some of the growth drivers for CNN last year?

Walton: Over the years, as various economies go up and down around the world, we are in so many different economies that we have a lot of touch points and are not weighed down by any one thing. We also have television, Web and mobile. Advertising is a huge component of our business domestically and internationally, but the distribution business is big for us. The Web business is big for us, mobile is growing, and we are in the syndication business as well.

THR: What do you predict for your business for this year?

Walton: I'm not allowed to give forward-leaning statements on financials. What I can tell you is that I am confident that we are going to have another great year. We have some new programs on CNN. We will be launching a new primetime program on HLN. We have some digital additions that we are going to make over the next four, five months. And the international business continues to evolve. So, I am very confident that we are going to have another strong year.

THR: You mentioned new programs. How do you feel about the performance of Piers Morgan so far?

Walton: It's spectacular. I'm really pleased. He is so clever, he is really smart, he is a big personality. And he works hard and does his homework. He's been stepping into the Egypt story now. We couldn't be happier.

THR: What about ratings? Have you noticed what kind of guests and topics do better for him or whether the show does better when he steps into breaking news versus has celebrity guests?

Walton: It's really too early to put a stamp on it. Piers and his producers and Ken Jautz who runs CNN U.S. will work together and look at what happens each day, review and always try to make it better each day. I can assure you that Piers will be every bit a part of the conversation, and the interview will be the basis of what that program is. But I think it is in its early days. He has tried all sorts of different types of shows in the two and a half weeks he has been on the air. Maybe that's what it will always be like.

THR: Parker Spitzer has been on the air longer, and you have tweaked that a bit. How happy are you with it now?

Walton: Much has been said and much has been written about the program. If you look at it just on its merits, it's one of the smartest programs on television - whether cable or broadcast. It fits very much within the brand of CNN and what it stands for. And if you look at the last 10 days or so, its performance has gotten a lot better and the past couple of nights it has beaten MSNBC. It's got some momentum right now.

THR: How do you explain that?

Walton: We had a couple of folks who weren't television professionals, and now they have got some time under their belts. They are performing, and the show just gets better and better.

THR: Anything you can say about the chatter that it will be just Spitzer one day?

Walton: I have got a little saying here at CNN internally that you can't burp without somebody somewhere writing. CNN commands a lot of attention, which is great. What you can count on is that we have Dr. Drew coming on HLN in primetime soon. That's the talent focus for our company right now.

THR: You have added personalities to primetime since Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes joked last year that some time CNN may be a bit boring. Do you feel you have made real progress?

Walton: It's in the eye of the beholder. What is funny to somebody is not funny to somebody else. What is exciting to one person might be boring to somebody else. But everybody who performs at CNN in an anchor role needs to be very, very smart and be able to relate to and be relevant to their audiences. We are not trying to be funny necessarily.
