Mark Schubert says his firing by USA Swimming caught him totally off guard and he's willing to go back to his job as head coach of the national team. Schubert and his attorney, Michael Bernstein, declined to comment on the reasons for his firing during a news conference Wednesday at the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Bernstein say he's trying to negotiate an amicable settlement with the sport's national governing body. Bernstein says he has serious doubts about the legitimacy of the firing. Schubert was under contract through the end of 2013, but he was placed on leave in mid-September and told about a month ago that he wouldn't be returning to his post. USA Swimming has declined to comment on the reasons for its decision and is looking for a new national team director.
