Il Campionato del mondo rally (World Rally Championship o WRC) è la massima competizione mondiale per auto da rally.

Il "Campionato Internazionale Marche" per vetture da rally nacque nel 1970. Nel 1973 il nome fu cambiato in "Campionato del Mondo Rally". In principio esisteva solo il Titolo Costruttori, cosicchè la classifica comprendeva inizialmente solo le Case automobilistiche che partecipavano al mondiale. Nel 1977 e 1978 si assegnò anche la "Coppa FIA Piloti", mentre dal 1979 la classifica venne suddivisa in "Campionato del Mondo Marche" e "Campionato del Mondo piloti".

Il campionato comprende una serie di gare (attualmente sono 16) che si disputano in vari Paesi del mondo da fine gennaio a metà novembre: ogni gara è composta da un certo numero di prove cronometrate, dette prove speciali, suddivise in tre giornate di gara (venerdì, sabato e domenica). Al termine di ogni gara si sommano i tempi di ogni prova speciale e la vittoria va a chi ha totalizzato il tempo più basso. Le gare si disputano su ogni tipo di tracciato: asfalto, ghiaia, sterrato, neve e ghiaccio a seconda del luogo e delle condizioni atmosferiche.

Le 16 gare attuali si svolgono in: Principato di Monaco, Svezia, Messico, Nuova Zelanda, Italia, Cipro, Turchia, Grecia, Argentina, Finlandia, Germania, Gran Bretagna, Giappone, Francia, Spagna e Australia.

Nel 2007 la stagione si svolgerà da gennaio a maggio e i rally si ridurranno a 8 o 9 per contenere i costi, mentre la stagione successiva inizierà ad agosto 2007 per chiudersi a maggio 2008.
