NJ school district: No D-grades policy a success

Post n°14 pubblicato il 02 Dicembre 2010 da qimeaucnzfrp

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. – A New Jersey school district that eliminated the "D" grade for students says the change has been a success.

The new policy in Mount Olive took effect in September. It raised the failure score to anything under a 70 instead of 65.

Superintendent Larrie Reynolds told the Daily Record that the number of failing grades for middle and high school students dropped 42.5 percent in the first quarter. And more students earned A's and B's.

Reynolds had proposed the policy last summer, saying he was tired of kids getting credit for not learning.

But some school officials and teachers say it's too early to declare the policy a success.

They note the new policy allows students to retake exams and redo assignments after initial failing grades, often bringing up their scores.

France's "Battle of the Misses": Flesh v. Decorum

Post n°13 pubblicato il 02 Dicembre 2010 da qimeaucnzfrp

PARIS (Reuters) – In her trademark black and white hat and severe pancake make-up, 78-year-old Genevieve de Fontenay has reigned supreme over the Miss France beauty contest for more than half a century.

But shocked by a series of nude photo scandals, the self-styled doyenne of decorum has set up a rival pageant in a moral crusade against current Miss France owners, the reality TV company Endemol which she accuses of cheapening the contest.

The dispute is gripping France, where despite a popular history of intellectualism and demure dressing, the masses are as hooked as the rest of the world on the skimpily dressed celebrities made famous by reality TV and beauty contests.

The battle will come to a head this weekend, when de Fontenay's "Miss Nationale" is picked in a modest ceremony in Paris, a day after the official Miss France contest is broadcast on prime-time under the patronage of veteran actor Alain Delon.

"Miss France's image of dignity and respectability has been flouted," said de Fontenay, a fashion model in her youth who took the reins of the pageant in 1954 alongside her now deceased partner Louis Poirot-de Fontenay.

"I've decided to do something different, and public opinion is behind me," de Fontenay told Reuters by telephone.

A striking beauty in her day, the now heavily made-up de Fontenay is a familiar figure in France, and well-known for her public rants against society's moral decline.

Her battle with Endemol dates back to 2002, when she sold the rights to the Miss France contest to the reality-TV giant, which is owned by Silvio Berlusconi's media empire Mediaset.

Although de Fontenay continued to preside over the pageant, the partnership was never an easy one. Endemol France are the makers of a local version of the Big Brother TV franchise and no strangers to naked flesh. De Fontenay is a straitlaced matriarch who was once elected "Miss Elegance" in the 1950s.

UNDIGNIFIED POSES

The cracks soon began to appear, with both parties notably clashing over whether to allow Miss France contestants to swap one-piece swimming costumes for more daring bikinis.

Then came the scandal over a series of erotic photos of Miss France 2008, which sparked public outbursts from de Fontenay.

The final straw came earlier this year when Endemol paid a former Miss Paris to appear in one of its reality TV shows, after previously stripping her of her title for publishing photos de Fontenay criticised as "pornographic."

"Miss France should be dignified under all circumstances, show respect for others -- a girl with her legs apart is hardly what I'd call dignified and I can't allow that," de Fontenay told Reuters.

Accusing Endemol of hypocrisy, she has since traveled around France, drumming up support for her own version of the contest which she says focuses on traditional values.

But her moral stance is up against the media might of Endemol, whose televised Miss France drew 8 million viewers last year, or 40 percent of the total viewing population.

Miss Nationale is due to be elected in front of an audience of 500 and has so far failed to find a broadcaster.

For Sylvie Tellier, organizer of the current Miss France pageant and a former title-holder herself, Endemol's bikini-clad contestants are more in tune with modern tastes.

"You have to face up to the fact that people want to see physical beauty," Tellier told Reuters.

"We get them to express themselves so viewers can chose an ambassador, but ultimately it's a beauty contest."

J&J, Takeda recall batches of cancer drug Velcade

Post n°12 pubblicato il 22 Novembre 2010 da qimeaucnzfrp

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Johnson & Johnson and Millennium Pharmaceuticals are recalling thousands of vials of the cancer drug Velcade sold in Europe, the United States, Japan and Malaysia after receiving reports of white particles seen floating in vials of the medicine.

The particles were found in batches of the drug distributed between January and June of this year.

They have been identified as a polyester-like material related to a component of the manufacturing process performed by a contract manufacturer for Millennium, which is now a unit of Japan's Takeda Pharmaceutical Co.

Velcade, known chemically as bortezomib, is approved to treat multiple myeloma and relapsed mantle cell lymphoma. It is sold by Millennium in the United States and by J&J unit Janssen-Cilag in Europe and the rest of the world.

The recall was the latest to hit J&J, which has been plagued by massive recalls of numerous consumer products, such as Children's Tylenol and Motrin, keeping those medicines off pharmacy shelves for months.

Six lots of Velcade were voluntarily recalled in Europe and Japan following five reports of floating particles in samples from two of the recalled batches after the powder form of the drug was reconstituted, according to details listed on the U.K. Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency drug alert website (link.reuters.com/tar26q)

Another seven lots are being recalled in the United States as a precaution, Millennium said.

"In the U.S. we have received no confirmed product complaints or adverse events related to this issue," Millennium spokeswoman Manisha Pai said.

In Europe, the recalled lots originally included about 195,000 vials of the 3.5 milligram dose of Velcade, but J&J expects to see only a fraction of that returned.

"Based on what we know, the majority of the lots has already been consumed. We anticipate recapturing about 20,000 vials," J&J spokeswoman Kellie McLaughlin said.

The situation is similar in the United States, with Millennium expecting about 10,000 vials to be returned from about 200,000 produced in the seven lots, as most of the drug has already been administered to patients, Pai said.

In addition, 22,300 3-mg vials, only sold in Japan, are being recalled, J&J said.

No injuries were reported and no new safety issues were identified related to the J&J recall, McLaughlin said.

The root cause of the problem has been identified and both companies said all of the recalled lots were produced prior to manufacturing process improvements that were put in place in September of 2009.
