A Baby Boomer's Guide to Jay-Z

Post n°9 pubblicato il 17 Novembre 2010 da qimeaucnzfrp

Tag: modelle

NEW YORK – The rapper's autobiography, Decoded, hits stores Tuesday, but you have no idea who this Jay-Z character is. Peter Lauria breaks down the lyrics to decipher the man with the mic.

If you're over the age of 50, have ever complained about the stereo being too loud, or think of rap music as little more than rhymes about druggies and women, then Jay-Z's probably a mystery to you. Tomorrow's release of the rapper's autobiography, , (the year's second-most anticipated music memoir after ), should have you worried. You don't want to seem out of touch to your kids, who already think you're hopelessly uncool. There's no time to read the book and you can't understand what Jay is saying on any of his 11 studio albums, which have sold more than 45 million copies combined.

Don't fret. We've got your back. Brush up on your Jay knowledge with our lyrical tour through the rapper's life and career, and by the time you get home tonight, you'll know enough to roll with Roc-A-Fella. (Um, that's the name of the record label Jay-Z owns.)

Who is this Jay-Z fella? The song "December 4th" begins with a voiceover from Jay's mom noting: "Shawn Carter was born on December 4/ Weighing in at 10 pounds 8 ounces/ He was the last of my four children/ The only one who didn't give me any pain when I gave birth to him/ And that's how I knew he was a special child."

Who is this Marcy girl he keeps rapping about?Marcy isn't a girl—it's the violent, drug-infested Brooklyn housing project consisting of "27 six-story buildings" where Jay grew up. The song "Where I'm From" illustrates it best: "One day I pray to you and said if I ever blow I'd let 'em know/ Mistakes and exactly what takes place in the ghetto/ Promises fulfilled, but still I feel my job ain't done/ Cough up a lung, where I'm from, Marcy's son, ain't nothing nice."

Does he have a multiple personality disorder? Who are Hov, Hova, Jigga, and Jiggaman? They are all the same person: Jay-Z. The rapper uses those handles interchangeably on the mic.

From the song "Public Service Announcement": "Allow me to re-introduce myself/ My name is Hov, OH, H-to-the-O-V/ I used to move snowflakes by the O-Z/ I guess even back then you can call me/ CEO of the R-O-C, Hov!"

Watch Jay-Z's "Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)..." music video.

You mentioned his mom, but what about his dad? What's the story there? The relationship between Jay and his father is a recurring narrative in the rapper's lyrics. Hova's (that's Jay, remember?) dad left when he was young, leaving the family in a struggle for survival in the projects, which forced Jay into an early life hustling drugs. The rapper overcame his resentment toward his father and they eventually reconciled later in life. But as Jay writes, "three months after we had our first conversation in 20 years, he died."

From the song "Moment of Clarity": Listen close you hear what I'm about/ Nigga feel my truths/ When Pop died/ Didn't cry/ Didn't know him that well/ Between him doing heroin/ And me doing crack sales."

So… he was a crack dealer?Yes, but the story's not cut and dry. Another recurring theme in Jay's raps is understanding the impact of culture, and from his point-of-view a lot of kids who came of age during the '80s crack epidemic had to turn to hustling to survive. They were forgotten about by the government, abused by the police, abandoned by the health-care system, and left to starve in the projects. "Guys my age, fed up with watching their moms struggle on a single income, were paying utility bills with the money from hustling," Jay writes.

From the song "Young, Gifted and Black": "Grew up thinking life ain't fair/ How can I get a real job/ China white right there/ Right in front of my sight like here, yeah/ There's your ticket out the ghetto/ Take flight right here."

Hmm… he sold drugs to get out of the ghetto until he realized he could make millions by glorifying drug dealing in rap music? That's a simplistic and ignorant viewpoint, and irrefutable proof to your kids that you just don't get Jay, and therefore you don't get "it," so stay away from that argument, you uptight, conservative fool. To your children, Jay is a sort of urban sociological poet, documenting a life on the streets that seems worlds away from where you are likely bringing them up. Jay never excuses his choices, just presents them as fact. "To tell the story of the kid with the gun without telling the story of why he has it is to tell a kind of lie," Jay writes. "To tell the story of the pain without telling the story of the rewards—the money, the girls, the excitement—is a different kind of evasion."

From the song "December 4th": "And it's nobody fault I made the decisions I made/ This is the life I chose or rather the life that chose me/ If you can't respect that your whole perspective is wack/ Maybe you'll love me when I fade to black."

OK, even if I buy into that argument, I don't understand why he has to use words like "bitches" and "nigga" all the time. It's not proper. Jay's story is the story of the street hustle, and it is the same story told over and over again in movies and books without anyone batting an eye at the language or images. It has even been told musically before, just not in rap, which is a relatively new format for you—you are over 40, remember?—and therefore seems raw and offensive. Get over it.

From the song "Renegade": Motherfuckers/ Say that I'm foolish I only talk about jewels/ Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it/ See I'm influenced by the ghetto you ruined/ That same dude you gave nothing, I made something doin'/ What I do through and through and/ I give you the news with a twist, it's just his ghetto point of view.

I do know a few things about Jay-Z. He's married to Beyonce.Wow, impressive, though you would never know the music moguls were married from the book or his music. They prefer to keep their relationship private and rarely talk about it in public—she is scarcely mentioned in Decoded, and sometimes she's referred to only obliquely.

From the song "Operation Corporate Takeover": "Came to fruition, sort of premonition/ Uh, uncontrollable hustler's ambition/ Alias superstition/ Like Stevie, the writing's on the wall like my lady, right baby? (The Writing's on the Wall is a record from Beyonce's former group, Destiny's Child.)

Speaking of business, wasn't Mr. Z on the Forbes richest list? Mr. Z? Jay has many nicknames, but that's not one of them. And, yes, he was on Forbes' 400 Richest Americans list. Time magazine considers him one of our "most influential" people. At 40 years old, Jays is worth $450 million. Among his business interests are a record label, music-publishing imprint, clothing and beauty line, sport-bar chain, restaurant, and stake in the New Jersey Nets basketball team. He also served as CEO of Def Jam Records, and, , has brand partnerships with companies from Budweiser to Reebok to Microsoft.

From the song "Operation Corporate Takeover": Word up on Madison Ave. is I'm a cash cow/ Word down on Wall Street homie you get the cash out/ IPO Hov no need for reverse merger/ The boy money talks no need to converse further/ The baby blue Maybach like I own Gerber/ Boardroom I'm lifting your skirt up/ The corporate takeover."

Watch Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'" music video.

He sounds like his own biggest fan. There's no arguing that point. One of rap's unifying lyrical threads is trying to find the freshest and most concise way for one MC to rhyme about being better than another MC. It goes back to before it was a cottage industry, when it was just street corner kids gathered in a "cipher" on the corner battling. But scratch past the ego, and you'll find that Jay is actually one of the most contemplative rappers in the game. He has bouts of insecurity, doubt, remorse, and heartbreak. It's all there; it's just overshadowed by the bravado.

From the song "This Can't Be Life": "My life is getting too wild/ I need to bring some sorta calm to it/ 'Bout to lose it; voices screamin' 'Don't do it!'/ It's like '93, '94, 'bout the year/ That Big and Mac dropped; and Illmatic rocked/ Outta every rag drop, and the West had it locked/ Everybody doin' em, I'm still scratchin on the block/ Like "Damn; I'mma be a failure."

This is a lot of information to digest. Can you sum up Jay's life in 140 characters? Don't be a lazy punk. We suggest you readin its entirety. If your kid is a fan, this memoir is likely to be as meaningful to them as Keith Richards' Life was to you. But in lieu of that, this verse seems apropos:

From the song "Renegade": "My demeanor—30 years my senior/ My childhood didn't mean much, only raising green up/ Raisin' my fingers to critics; raisin' my head to the sky/ BIG I did it—multi before I die (nigga)/ No lie, just know I chose my own fate/ I drove by the fork in the road and went straight."

Facebook's Project Titan is the modern messaging system, but is 'not an e-mail killer'

Post n°8 pubblicato il 17 Novembre 2010 da qimeaucnzfrp

In an unsurprising turn of events, unveiled its "modern messaging system" this morning. As expected,љ will indeed compete with Gmail and other e-mail providers with the option of an @facebook.com domain, but Facebook hopes it will eventually revolutionize the way people use the Internet to communicate - emphasis on eventually.

In the lengthy announcement, CEOand director of engineering Andrew Bosworth discussed the details of Project Titan while primarily focusing on the belief that it is the future of communication. What Zuckerberg also reiterated was that "this is not an e-mail killer." When pressed specifically about the , Zuckerberg mentioned some mild irritation with the media's coverage of the companies' public spat, and simply said, "I think 's a really good product...we just think that this simpler kind of message is how people will shift their communication." In short, Facebook has no plans to beat Gmail (or ,, or ) at its own game...yet. It's the long run effect the company is looking at.

But aside to any dramatics of the day, Facebook gave an overall look at what users can expect from its new messaging system:

Seamless Messaging, Conversation History, and Social InboxThese are the three principles the message system is built around. Seamless messaging will combine all the various ways you communicate into one place - SMS, chat, e-mail, Facebook IM, etc. You can archive or completely delete these threads at any time. Conversation History will now be one thread - no multiple threads over different applications. This works to show you your conversation with each individual person over time. The Social Inbox works as a spam filter. It's a tiered system, ranking message importance by the amount you interact with another Facebook user. Your list of priority contacts are automatically created.

How it works So how will Facebook decide what type of message to send to a person? While it was difficult to get a concrete answer (other than that this is what it will test on its first users in the months to come), it seems like it will use whatever is quickest. For instance, if a user sends an e-mail to another, who happens to be on Facebook, he'll receive a Facebook IM. Still, the service will recognize users' messaging preferences and defer to those. This system is called the Policy Engine, and aims to "try and make it so people don't have to think about this stuff," so that all you need is a "message and a person."

Username@facebook.comYes, users will now have the option of a Facebook e-mail address. The interface is similar to many e-mail services, allowing attachments and displaying simple icons. What differs is the purposeful lack of a subject line and hitting “enter” will send your message.

Will this affect advertising?Zuckerberg claimed that advertising would remain the same as it is now - a bar on the right hand side of the screen. It will still be based around what you provide in your profile, but the content of your messages will not be used for marketing purposes.

The Future of Messaging Again and again, both Zuckerberg and Bosworth reminded us that this isn't making e-mail obsolete. "We don't expect anyone to shut down their Yahoo account and switch to Facebook tomorrow," Zuckerberg said. At the same time, he stressed that this is a long-term project, because he believes this is eventually the way people will use online communication. "This is the way that the future should work...maybe [in the future] e-mail isn't as important a part as it was before."

Don’t expect to see any changes tomorrow. Facebook will slowly roll out its new messaging system, starting out as invite only and using feedback to finalize the project over the coming months.

Bills RB Spiller, DE Johnson expected to miss week

Post n°7 pubblicato il 17 Novembre 2010 da qimeaucnzfrp

Tag: nomadi

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – As much as running back C.J. Spiller wants to practice this week, Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey doesn't think that's likely because of a hamstring injury.

On Monday, Gailey all but officially ruled out the rookie first-round draft pick from playing in Buffalo's game at Cincinnati on Sunday. He also said defensive end Spencer Johnson is expected to miss at least one game because of a hamstring injury.

Both players were hurt in helping the Bills (1-8) secure their first win of the season on Sunday, a 14-12 victory over Detroit.

"If you talk to C.J., C.J. thinks he's going to be hoping to practice probably this week," Gailey said. "Probably a realistic thing is he'll miss one (game), and then we'll see from there."

Spiller was hurt when planting his foot to brace himself as he was pushed out of bounds after a 29-yard punt return in the second quarter.

He said he didn't initially feel the injury until after he got up and began making his way across the field to the Bills sideline.

On Monday, Spiller walked with a slight limp favoring his right leg, and said he wants to practice once the team returns on Wednesday.

"That's the goal," he said.

Without Spiller, newly signed running back Quinton Ganther will take over the backup duties to starter Fred Jackson. Cornerback Leodis McKelvin will handle both kickoff and punt returns in place of Spiller and receiver Roscoe Parrish, who was placed on injured reserve last week after he broke his wrist.

Johnson, hurt in the second half against Detroit, was spotted in the Bills locker room with a wrap around his upper right leg.

Gailey called it an "outside chance" that Johnson will practice this week, and said the player could miss as many as two games.

Gailey also updated the status of Shawne Merriman, saying he doesn't expect the linebacker to begin practicing until next week. Merriman aggravated a right Achilles' tendon injury early into his first practice with the Bills on Wednesday, a week after being claimed off waivers from San Diego.

E-Verify Becomes Hot Issue in Orange County

Post n°6 pubblicato il 17 Settembre 2010 da qimeaucnzfrp

Tag: flebo

Costa Mesa, CA, Sept. 15 -- Politicians are learning fast that one of the not-so secret ingredients to winning votes in 2010 is to be against illegal immigration. E-Verify, the federal system that allows employers hiring someone to check their social security number for authorization to work in the United States, is taking center stage on this heated issue.

Costa Mesa Mayor, Allan Mansoor, who is running for State Assembly has apparently heard his constituents loud and clear. He is beginning the process to require all employers in Costa Mesa as well as the city and it's vendors to use E-Verify by requesting authorization from City Council to research the E-Verify system. Costa Mesa would become the third city in Orange County to mandate E-Verify after Mission Viejo and Yorba Linda.

Although, many politicians around the country are throwing their hat into the anti-illegal immigration fight for the first time, Mansoor has established himself for years fighting illegal immigration including closing down day laborer locations in Costa Mesa.

In Southern California where immigrants can outnumber U.S. born citizens in some communities, people of different nationalities have always coexisted without much issue. Now that the Great Recession has created financial hardships on most families, people who once turned a blind eye are now sitting up alert as they hear about illegal immigrants taking American jobs. Voters are putting their politicians on notice this election, fight against illegal immigration or lose my vote.

The obvious defense against anti-illegal immigration is to declare racism. While racism certainly does exist, that does not seem to be the motivator with this emotional issue. Americans truly are scared for the first time in generations about how they will pay for the basics like food and housing. Many are living paycheck to paycheck and if employed are thrilled to have a job they despise. Anything that threatens our sense of security such as immigrants who could take jobs away from Americans, causes a feeling of fear which leads to anger. That's when the natural feeling of "wanting something done about it" kicks in.

On a broader scale, parents are worried about what the future holds for their children if illegal immigration is not under control. Programs like E-Verify give people a sense that something is being done to heal the wound. That wound will not be healed in Orange County or anywhere else until the job market returns to normal. Normal to most people is along the lines of, "I need a better job so I am going to send out some resumes and get a new job in the next month or two." That is the American work environment we have all become use to and that is what Americans expect to get back. Extending a generous hand toward illegal-immigrants may not return again until jobs return.

Brazil lead India 2-0 in Davis Cup tennis

Post n°5 pubblicato il 17 Settembre 2010 da qimeaucnzfrp

CHENNAI, India (AFP) – Brazil won two tense five-set marathons against India on Friday to take a 2-0 lead in the Davis Cup World Group play-offs on Friday.

World number 27 Thomaz Bellucci fought back from the brink to prevail over the 479th-ranked Rohan Bopanna 6-7 (2/7), 7-6 (9/7), 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 in four hours and 28 minutes.

Ricardo Mello then marked his return to Davis Cup play after three years to oust India's number one Somdev Devvarman 4-6, 6-2, 6-7 (3/7), 6-2, 6-4 in another classic that lasted four hours and 12 minutes.

Brazil's non-playing captain Joao Zwetsch said his players' ability to deal with difficult conditions was the key to success on the opening day.

"I always believed this would be a tough tie and that is how it has turned out," said Zwetsch. "But we were ready to confront the situation.

"It was hot and humid and we had to adjust to the hard court. We could have lost both matches, but won both and that was due to the heart and emotion shown by our players.

"Thomaz was just unbelievable and Ricardo kept fighting and stayed aggressive till the end.

"But we are not taking victory for granted. There are three more tough matches to go and anything can happen."

Brazil, who have lost four consecutive playoff ties since 2006, are looking to return to the elite 16-nation competition for the first time since 2003.

India were forced into the playoffs after losing to Russia in the first round of the World Group in Moscow in March.

The plucky Bopanna, 30, who last week reached his first Grand Slam doubles final at the US Open with his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, narrowly failed to secure his best-ever Cup win.

The Indian led 5-2 in the decider when Bellucci saved three match points and reeled off three games in a row to make it 5-5.

The 22-year-old Brazilian then broke Bopanna's serve in the 17th game and held his own in the next to clinch victory in front of some 1,500 home fans at the Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium.

"I don't know how I won today," a visibly relieved Bellucci said. "It could have gone either way many times in the match. I was fortunate I hung in there and was able to win.

"I really did not expect Bopanna to hit so hard and serve so well. He played an excellent match. I am glad I could get a point for my country."

Bopanna said his growing confidence and the support of the crowd helped him through the marathon match.

"I don't think I have ever played such a long match," he said. "Of course I am disappointed that I came so near and yet lost.

"But I must give credit to Thomaz. He showed why he is ranked so high. He won the big points at the right time."

Mello, who last played in the Davis Cup in 2007, bounced back twice to take the second singles into the final set against Devvarman.

The duo traded breaks in the seventh and eighth games of the decider before Mello, ranked 75th against Devvarman's 113, broke again in the ninth and served out the match.

On Saturday, the veteran Indian pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, unbeaten in their last 23 Davis Cup doubles matches, will take on Bruno Soares and Marcelo Melo.
