A cultural conservative group called the American Principles Project announced Tuesday that it will not participate in this year's Conservative Political Action Conference, a marquee annual gathering of conservative interest groups in Washington.љ The reason for the group's withdrawal: GOProud, a gay Republican group, is included in the gathering.APP President Frank Cannon informed the Conservative Political Action ConferenceMonday of the plan to pull out of CPAC 2011.APP Executive Director Andy BlomTuesday: ""We cannot allow an obsession for inclusiveness to erode the core principles of conservatism. ... By allowing GOProud to be a prominent participant in CPAC 2011, [organizers] have demonstrated a dangerous disregard for the importance of faith, marriage, and the family in our conservative values."Cannon wrote in his withdrawal letter: "Having now examined closely GOProud's mission and its behavior since its inception, we can only conclude that the organization's purposes are fundamentally incompatible with a movement that has long embraced the ideals of family and faith in a thriving civil society."GOProud on Monday announced a joint petition with tea party leaders to ask conservatives to avoid social issues in favor of fiscal ones in the coming Congress.Cannon added in his letter that GOProud's war of words with GOP South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint is another reason why they've decided they can't work alongside the group. DeMint had drawn controversy recently over his claims that gay people and sexually active single women are not fit to be teachers.GOProud Executive Director Jimmy LaSalvia told The Ticket that the group stand by its criticism of DeMint."He took a position that is contrary to what Ronald Reagan took. We are happy to stand with Ronald Reagan," LaSalvia said. The late president had opposed Prop. 6, a California ballot initiative to ban gay teachers.LaSalvia also took strong issue with the APP claim that GOProud harms conservative unity on so-called values issues. "Our record and our positions speak for themselves," he said.
