LYON, France (AFP) – Michael Llodra and Gael Monfils put France on the verge of the Davis Cup final on Friday when they won the opening rubbers of their semi-final against Argentina for a 2-0 lead. Llodra served and volleyed his way to a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Juan Monaco before world number 15 Monfils saw off David Nalbandian 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. The winner of this semi-final will take on either Serbia or the Czech Republic in December's final. Llodra, the world number 30, showed no signs off the dizziness which forced him to retire in the US Open third round to put the nine-time Davis Cup winners ahead. Service proved the key difference for Llodra as he sent down 22 aces compared to the Argentine's five. "I was very nervous at the start," said Llodra. "But it's great to put France ahead 1-0. "I had to focus and play my game because anything can happen in the Davis Cup." Llodra gave the home crowd a scare in the third set when he tumbled to the ground. "It was just an ankle twist, nothing serious," said the Frenchman. Monfils took a 2-1 career lead over world number 28 Nalbandian into his match and enjoyed two breaks in the opening set. He regularly served at 210kmh as Nalbandian struggled to stay with the flamboyant Frenchman.
