Review: Carll celebrates debauchery on new album

Post n°22 pubblicato il 18 Febbraio 2011 da quyraf

Hayes Carll, "KMAG YOYO (And Other American Stories)" (Lost Highway)

As suggested by his title "KMAG YOYO," an acronym soldiers use that stands for "Kiss My (Expletive) Guys, You're On Your Own," Hayes Carll doesn't concern himself with politeness or discretion. Instead, the Texas singer-songwriter continues to detail the debauched lifestyle of a charming rake who not only acknowledges his rambling ways, but at times celebrates his wayward behavior.

Carll climbed from cult favorite to fast-rising Americana star with his previous outing, 2008's "Trouble In Mind." His new album shows the fruits of this success: The punkish guitar blast that opens the first song, "Stomp And Holler," proves that Carll now can afford to take a band on the road instead of touring as a solo act.

He makes the best of new economic standing, drenching the drunken country waltz "Hard Out Here" in steel guitar and employing a jaunty banjo and accordion on"Bottle In My Hand," which features Canadian honky-tonker Corb Lund and Nashville free spirit Todd Snider joining Carll to toast a life free of mortgages and marriages.

That's Carll's M.O.: He conveys the blurry joy of hosting an ongoing party. Whereas contemporary country star Jamey Johnson anchors his honky-tonking in guilt and self-examination, and Blake Shelton treats partying as a weekend release, Carll convincingly contends that daily decadence has its benefits.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: In the hyper-driven title song, Carll colorfully imagines a hapless soldier's experience as the subject of a military experiment to use LSD to make him bolder on dangerous missions.

Chromosomes Follow Tricky Path to Make Effective Sperm

Post n°21 pubblicato il 18 Febbraio 2011 da quyraf

They say opposites attract, and somehow even the wildly different X and Y chromosomes are able to pair up during sperm formation. New research shows how complex that process is, and it pinpoints a step in the process that can go awry, leading to sex-chromosome diseases or infertility.

The research team, which conducted its study on mice, thinks the results also would apply to humans and eventually could result in a new infertility treatment.

Lead researcher Liisa Kauppi, of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, discovered that the X and Y chromosomes have multiple mechanisms to make sure this unlikely pair are able to combine and effectively separate into individual and .

"This is really the Achilles’ heel, the most difficult region of the genome to pair, so that's why these mechanisms have evolved," co-author Maria Jasin, also of Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, told LiveScience.

Kauppi noted, "the X and Y chromosomes really behave quite differently than the rest of the chromosomes."

Crossed chromosomes

The miracle of conception is not actually a miracle; the bodies of all mammals go through a special type of cell division to make sperm and egg cells. Each cell carries two sets of genes (sequences of DNA), which are twisted into thread-like chromosomes, except for egg and sperm cells, which have only one set.

During fertilization, the half of mom's chromosome set (in the egg) gets paired with the half of dad's set contained in the sperm.  The two sets are very similar, but contain certain differences, so they are called "sister chromosomes." This new set of chromosomes grows into a full-sized human, which then makes it's own sperm or eggs. When the cell gets ready to , the two sets of chromosomes copy themselves and line up with their sisters in pairs.

To ensure high genetic diversity when the chromosomes pair, they play a game of switcharoo and swap some of their genetic information. They do this by cutting both sister chromosomes in the same place, called a "double-strand break," and then stitching the swapped portion into place, called a "crossover," or recombination.

"We understand a great deal about the actual mechanism of recombination,” said Scott Hawley, of Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City, Mo., who wasn't involved in the research. However, “one of the areas that still remains pretty opaque is how cells control where recombination occurs."

Recombination happens pretty easily in most chromosomes, which are very similar to each other and don't need too much help to pair up anywhere along their length. The confusion comes with the male's sex chromosomes – the X and Y (females have two X's which can crossover like any other pair). Thesein size, shape and the sequence of their nucleotides (the chemicals that make up the DNA ladder molecule) yet they are required to pair up and cross over like any other chromosome pair.

Sexy swapping

The X and Y chromosomes have a tiny region, covering less than 1 percent of their length, where they can match up and perform this strand-swapping. The cells have to make sure to cross over the DNA in this tiny matching area to make viable sperm. If they can't, the X and Y chromosomes won't divide and the sperm cell will die, or genetic diseases such as Klinefelter's (where the child ends up with two Xs and one Y) or Turner's (a single X) could occur.

Kauppi studied sperm formation in normal mice and noticed that the sex chromosome crossover happens after the rest of the chromosomes are paired. The reason simply could be that they take longer to make the double-strand breaks.

But then the team tested mice with different forms of the protein that controls this crossover process, called SPO11beta or SPO11alpha. For the male mice that expressed only SPO11beta, they were infertile about 70 percent of the time; that wasn't the case for males with the alpha form of the protein, which is important for viable sperm formation, Kauppi said.

It is likely that this sex chromosome crossover happens the same way in humans, which is what Kauppi is studying next. Based on rates of X-Y pairing-related diseases, co-author Scott Keeney, also of Sloan-Kettering, noted "there are some individuals who are more prone to having the X and Y misbehave."

"There are many patients who show up in clinics where the actual cause of infertility isn't known," Keeney told LiveScience.

Diagnostic tests could be created tois a result of these processes, and possible treatment options could be developed. Tests also could help diagnose the likelihood of a sex , like Klinefelter's or Turner's syndrome.

"This opens up the field in a really exciting way," Hawley told LiveScience. "I really thought this was a terrific paper."

FDA approves first 3-D mammography device

Post n°20 pubblicato il 16 Febbraio 2011 da quyraf

WASHINGTON – The Food and Drug Administration said Friday it has approved the first mammography device that generates 3-D images of the breast, potentially helping doctors spot more cancerous tumors.

The Selenia Dimensions System from Hologic Inc. offers both 2-D and 3-D X-ray images, providing additional viewpoints of the breast.

The FDA says the new system doubles the radiation exposure for patients, but also increases the accuracy of diagnosis. As a result, fewer women are expected to undergo additional scans.

"Physicians can now access this unique and innovative 3-D technology that could significantly enhance diagnosis and treatment approaches," said Jeffrey Shuren, director of the FDA's device division, in a statement.

The FDA approved the device based on two studies in which X-ray specialists demonstrated a 7 percent improvement in spotting cancerous tumors when viewing images from Hologic's device, compared with traditional 2-D images. Such images can cause visibility problems due to overlapping skin, which can hide tumors or create the appearance of tumors where there are none.

Approximately one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, according to the National Cancer Institute. The institute recommends women ages 40 and older have a mammogram every one to two years.

The Selenia device is already approved in Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Hologic is based in Bedford, Mass. Company shares rose 36 cents to $20.09 in afternoon trading.

Obama defends his new budget of 'tough choices'

Post n°19 pubblicato il 15 Febbraio 2011 da quyraf

WASHINGTON – Defending his new budget as one of "tough choices," President Barack Obama said Tuesday that more difficult decisions about the nation's biggest expenses — Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security — will have to be tackled by Democrats and Republicans acting together, not by White House dictates.

"This is not a matter of, `you go first, I go first,'" he said. "It's a matter of everybody having a serious conversation about where we want to go and then ultimately getting in that boat at the same time so it doesn't tip over."

The president pitched his $3.73 trillion budget as a balance of spending on needed programs and significant reductions that would cut the deficit by $1.1 trillion over 10 years. The budget includes a mix of spending freezes on domestic programs, pay hike suspensions for federal civilian workers and new revenues from increased taxes on the wealthy and on oil and gas producers.

But Obama's deficit relief is far more modest than that detailed by his fiscal commission, which in December proposed measures that would mop up four times as much red ink. Unlike his blue-ribbon group, the administration's budget does not address structural changes in Social Security or Medicare, the two largest items in the federal budget.

"Look at the history of how these deals get done," Obama said Tuesday. "Typically it's not because there's an Obama plan out there. It's because Democrats and Republicans are committed to tackling this in a serious way."

The commission's bipartisan report included politically difficult recommendation such as increasing the Social Security retirement age and reducing future increases in benefits. And while Obama has promised to overhaul the corporate tax system, he stops short of commission recommendations that would lower rates but generate additional revenue at the same. Obama has called for "revenue neutral" fixes to corporate taxes, meaning they would neither cost more money nor add money to the treasury.

"I'm not suggesting we don't have to do more," the president said.

At times defensive, Obama used his news conference to offer his own tutorial on how Washington works.

He voiced exasperation at what he said was the capital's impatient culture and its insistence on immediate results. He said he faced the same demands on health care, the military's don't-ask, don't-tell policy on gays, and on the uprising in Egypt.

"There's a tendency for us to assume that if it didn't happen today, it's not going to happen," he said.

He also pulled the curtain back on the partisan positioning typical of politics, while at the same time pressing Republicans to join him at the negotiating table.

"I expect that all sides will have to do a little posturing on television and speak to their constituencies and rally their troops," he said. "But ultimately what we need is a reasonable, responsible and initially probably somewhat quiet and toned-down conversation about, `all right, where can we compromise and get something done.'

Obama at one point overstated the achievements of his budget, asserting that by the middle of the current decade annual federal spending would match annual revenues."We will not be adding more to the national debt," he said.

But his budget shows deficits as well as debt increasing every year through 2021, and the president later had to clarify. The balance in spending and revenue, he said, applied only to the smaller "discretionary" portion of the budget, not to interest on the national debt or to rising health care costs in Medicare and Medicaid.

"That's going to require entitlement reform and it's going to require tax reform," he said.

Obama said he also wants to work with Republicans to find common ground on government spending for the remainder of this fiscal year and to avoid a government shutdown. Stopping the basic functions of government could damage the economic recovery, he said.

"I think it is important to make sure that we don't try to make a series of symbolic cuts this year that could endanger the recovery," he said. Obama said cutting too deeply in Washington could prompt thousands of layoffs in state and local governments, which would hurt the economy.

"The key here is for people to be practical and not score political points," he said. "That's true for all of us."

Obama's budget aims to cut the deficit in part with tax increases, including eliminating tax breaks for oil and gas producers, which have failed to win support before under a Democratic control Congress. The measures face an even tougher challenge now that Republicans control the House of Representatives.

"I continue to believe I'm right," he said, when asked why he relied on previously defeated proposals. "So we're going to try again."

His new budget would cut spending on popular energy assistance programs and community development projects. Obama took note of the harsh impact that cuts can have on individual Americans. But he said the most important thing he can do as president is focus on the long-term stability of the economy to help the largest number of people.

"I definitely feel folks' pain," he said, mentioning the gripping stories recounted in the 10 letters a day that he reads from among the thousands received at the White House. "You want to help every single one individually."

J-Lo at Obama Super Bowl Party

Post n°18 pubblicato il 06 Febbraio 2011 da quyraf

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Actress and music diva Jennifer Lopez will top the bill at US President Barack Obama's annual Super Bowl party on Sunday, as the Green Bay Packers take on the Pittsburgh Steelers for the NFL championship.

J-Lo will be joined by husband Marc Anthony at the White House party, also featuring top officials including Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, a senior US official said.

At one point, Obama had high hopes for the big title game, as his beloved Chicago Bears made it to the semi-final stage, but were knocked out by the Packers, the pride of Wisconsin.

Obama will be seeking a piece of the Super Bowl XLV action himself on Sunday, as he will grant a rare interview to Fox television's conservative talk show host Bill O'Reilly as part of the network's build-up to the big game.
