Friends, neighbors share memories of blast victims

SAN FRANCISCO – The five women grew up together and shared high school and college graduations, weddings, the births of their children and family vacations.

Four of them gathered to mourn the one who was missing — Jacqueline Greig, 44, who was killed with her 13-year-old daughter Janessa in a natural gas pipeline blast that tore through their house and destroyed almost 40 homes in their neighborhood.

"She had integrity, poise. She wanted to set a good example, and that is what she did," said Monica Medina-Campos, one of those friends.

Medina-Campos and Greig had met at St. John Ursuline High School for Girls and went on to attend San Francisco State University together.

The friends gathered at a Thursday night vigil that was followed Friday by a funeral Mass at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church.

The caskets of the mother and daughter were covered by a single pall and topped by a cross. Jacqueline Greig's husband James and their 16-year-old daughter Gabriela sat in the front row during the service in English and Spanish.

Children in uniform from Janessa Greig's 8th grade class at the church filled several pews.

Monsignor Michael Harriman told those in attendance that Janessa Greig, as student body president, had a role in choosing "don't stop believing" as the school motto for the year.

"So I say to all of you here today, as you are struggling with this horrific tragedy, don't stop believing," he said.

Friends said Jacqueline Greig's devotion to family was reflected in the achievements of her daughter Janessa, who was remembered by her classmates at the vigil as friendly, focused and dedicated to her faith.

The girl with a big smile also found time to write for the school paper, act in the drama club, play the piano, take traditional Mexican folk dancing classes and volunteer with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

"She was wise beyond her years," Medina-Campos said.

Many in the standing-room-only crowd at the vigil knew the mother and daughter, who made and kept friends easily and lived a life many said served as an example.

Like her mother, Janessa Greig was remembered for being the first to say hello to a newcomer.

"She was the only person you can say everyone liked," said Daniela Zarich, 14, a classmate at St. Cecilia School who knew Janessa since kindergarten.

"She was always friendly, smiling. That's how I always think of her," said Jazmin Gonzalez, 12, who took Ballet Folklorico classes with Janessa.

In a recording of a confirmation speech played after the congregation said the rosary, Janessa Greig appeared to be a thoughtful, well-spoken teen.

"In today's society there is so much wrong and so much evil, but our faith strengthens us," she said during the speech.

Ironically, Jacqueline Greig worked as an analyst for the California Public Utilities Commission and was a member of the natural gas committee of the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates.

She spent time during the summer looking into a Pacific Gas and Electric proposal to replace out-of-date pipes, with no idea that one of those pipes ran through her own neighborhood, said Pearlie Sabino, one of Greig's co-workers.

Two other women died in the explosion that occurred just behind the home of the Greigs. Three people were missing — all members of the Bullis family, who lived just yards from the source of the blast.

A vigil for Jessica Morales, 20, also was scheduled for Friday, with a funeral service set for Saturday.

She was with her boyfriend Joseph Ruigomez when the explosion ripped his house apart. He escaped and remained in critical condition.

Elizabeth Torres, 81, lived two doors away from the Greigs in a house she had occupied for the past 40 years. When the pipeline exploded, Torres, a mother of nine children, was with a daughter she lived with and one who was visiting. The two daughters and a son-in-law survived and were recovering from severe burns in a hospital.

Llodra, Monfils put France ahead in semi-final

Post n°6 pubblicato il 17 Settembre 2010 da quyraf

LYON, France (AFP) – Michael Llodra and Gael Monfils put France on the verge of the Davis Cup final on Friday when they won the opening rubbers of their semi-final against Argentina for a 2-0 lead.

Llodra served and volleyed his way to a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Juan Monaco before world number 15 Monfils saw off David Nalbandian 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The winner of this semi-final will take on either Serbia or the Czech Republic in December's final.

Llodra, the world number 30, showed no signs off the dizziness which forced him to retire in the US Open third round to put the nine-time Davis Cup winners ahead.

Service proved the key difference for Llodra as he sent down 22 aces compared to the Argentine's five.

"I was very nervous at the start," said Llodra. "But it's great to put France ahead 1-0.

"I had to focus and play my game because anything can happen in the Davis Cup."

Llodra gave the home crowd a scare in the third set when he tumbled to the ground.

"It was just an ankle twist, nothing serious," said the Frenchman.

Monfils took a 2-1 career lead over world number 28 Nalbandian into his match and enjoyed two breaks in the opening set.

He regularly served at 210kmh as Nalbandian struggled to stay with the flamboyant Frenchman.

France can wrap up the tie on Saturday if Llodra and Arnaud Clement can defeat Eduardo Schwank and Horacio Zeballos in the doubles.

Lots of choices at '2010 teen choice awards': complete winner's list

Post n°5 pubblicato il 09 Settembre 2010 da quyraf

Tag: autunno

Monday night on FOX it was time for the 2010 Teen Choice Awards. Hosted by Katy Perry along with the male cast members from the hit show Glee, the show featured some of the hottest stars in teendom today.

Accepting their cool surfboard shaped awards, teen faves like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez graced the stage. While the vampire movie Twilightand its stars took the bulk of the awards, there was plenty left for everyone else in a show that doled out more awards than any awards show I've ever seen. They must have bought those surfboard awards in bulk from Oriental Trading.

Singer Jason Derulo performed on the show, as did Puff Daddy/P Diddy/Diddy/ Hey Diddle Diddle. And if you were in a high school musical mood, fear not- the entire show had a high school theme, with Perry donning everything from cheerleader pompoms to a prom queen crown.

A hilarious segment featured the Kardashian sisters joined by their "shy" sister, Cougar (played by George Lopez dressed in drag). Funny stuff. Equally funny, the hip Betty White, who interrupted Blind Side co-star Sandra Bullock's winner's speech.

Best of all, they kept things fairly clean on the Teen Choice Awards. Very refreshing after the bleep-laden MTV Movie Awards last month. Mom approves.

Rapper T.I. comeback could be derailed with arrest

Post n°3 pubblicato il 06 Settembre 2010 da quyraf

After finishing a sentence for weapons charges earlier this year, T.I. was poised to have the comeback of the fall.

The multiplatinum rapper starred in the nation's No. 1 movie, recently married his longtime girlfriend, taped a music special for VH1 and was wrapping up a new album. But after an arrest Wednesday in California, there are questions about whether he's returning to the music charts — or prison.

The Grammy-winning hitmaker, who is on three years of probation, was taken into custody with wife Tameka "Tiny" Cottle on suspicion of possessing methamphetamines after police pulled over their Maybach in West Hollywood. They were released on $10,000 bail early Thursday.

While charges have yet to be filed, the case has the potential to put one of music's top names in behind bars yet again.

"We're not making any observations at this time," said Ed Garland, a defense attorney for T.I. "This is an unfortunate occurrence, and we do not know what the outcome will be."

His music label, Atlantic Records, also said it "would be premature to speculate about the current situation given that there is an ongoing investigation of this matter."

Known as the "King of the South," T.I is a top name in hip-hop, and pop. Born as Clifford Harris, he sold millions of albums since his debut and racked up hits like "Whatever You Like" and "U Don't Know Me." He also had top collaborations with artists including Rihanna, Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake.

But his celebrated career was put in jeopardy in 2007 when he was caught trying to buy semiautomatic weapons on the way to a BET Awards show. The Atlanta rapper, who has served time for drug and other offenses, pleaded guilty to weapons charges and served seven months in an Arkansas prison and three months in a halfway house in Georgia.

He was ordered not to commit another federal, state or local crime while on supervised release, or to illegally possess a controlled substance. He was also told to take at least three drug tests after his release and to participate in a drug and alcohol treatment program.

T.I. didn't appear to need government intervention to stay out of trouble. The rapper talked of a new, positive start: He spoke to kids about the dangers of drugs and guns, and former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young was one of his supporters. As he prepared for his most recent sentence, the rapper starred in the MTV reality show, "T.I.'s Road to Redemption: 45 Days to Go."

"Right now, it's all about moving forward and just acknowledging the blessing that are here today. ... Just moving past the regrets of yesterday — the things that could've been done better," T.I. told The Associated Press in July.

After his release, he wasted little time returning to the spotlight. He released new music and was one of the stars of "Takers," a shoot-'em-up about an armored truck robbery that goes bad. He is working on an album, which was slated to come out this year, and last month, he taped a VH1 "Storytellers" performance.

T.I. also married Cottle, the former singer for the 1990s R&B group Xscape; she has found new fame as the star of the BET reality show "Tiny & Toya."

Cottle took to her Twitter on Thursday, thanking fans for support and prayers. "We love u guys:) going 2bed now! So glad 2b n a nice clean bed," she wrote.

A representative for VH1 said it was too early to determine how his arrest might affect the upcoming special. A representative for "Takers" did not immediately return a request for comment.

T.I.'s probation officer has asked him to return to Atlanta, said Don Samuel, one of T.I.'s attorneys. He said it was unclear when T.I. would return to his hometown.

U.S. Attorney Sally Yates, Atlanta's top federal law enforcement official, said she would not speculate on what could happen to Harris. "The probation office is in the process of determining what happened and will make a recommendation regarding Mr. Harris when they have all the facts," she said.

His probation officer can recommend that the terms of the rapper's probation be changed, such as to require that he take more drug counseling classes and undergo more frequent drug tests. Or the officer could ask the judge to revoke the rapper's probation, which was set to end in 2013. That could lead to a prison sentence.

The decision would be made by U.S. District Judge Charles Pannell Jr., who presided over the original case.

Dwight Thomas, another T.I. lawyer, also stressed it was too early to determine the impact of the arrest. "We don't have a full grasp of the facts circumstances. We don't know the violation," he said. "I will remain optimistic until this matter is favorably resolved."

Young, who is an ordained minister, married Harris and Cottle last month in Miami. He said T.I. has made "marvelous progress" and that he is a good father and partner.

He also was skeptical about the charges against the rapper and the circumstances of the arrest.

"I assume that you're innocent until you're proven guilty," Young told The AP in a telephone interview. "If he was driving and smoking marijuana, that is absolutely stupid. But why was he pulled over in the first place? Because he had a Maybach? Because he was black? Because they know who he is and resent his success?"

Young said his advice to Harris has been focused on violence, not drug use.

"We never talked about drugs," Young said, but added: "Maybe I should have."
