Ford recalls 281,000 F-150 trucks in U.S.

DETROIT (Reuters) – Ford Motor Co is recalling nearly 281,000 F-150 pickup trucks in the United States because of a potential problem with the door handles not working properly, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported on Thursday.

Model years 2009 and 2010 F-150 trucks produced from January 2008 to November 2009 are being recalled because in the event of a crash, "the door handle spring can fail causing the door latch to open," NHTSA said in a filing.

As of January 21, there had been no reported accidents or injuries related to this issue, Ford told NHTSA.

Ford said that customers will initially be asked to bring their F-150s to dealerships if any door handle is loose or fails to return to a stowed position.

Later, once replacement parts are available, owners will be asked to bring in their trucks for inspection at Ford or Lincoln dealerships, the filing said.

The F-150 is the primary model of the F-series of pickup trucks that have been for 34 straight years the best-selling vehicles in the U.S. market.

J-Lo at Obama Super Bowl Party

Post n°15 pubblicato il 04 Febbraio 2011 da rdhouyjekpct

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Actress and music diva Jennifer Lopez will top the bill at US President Barack Obama's annual Super Bowl party on Sunday, as the Green Bay Packers take on the Pittsburgh Steelers for the NFL championship.

J-Lo will be joined by husband Marc Anthony at the White House party, also featuring top officials including Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, a senior US official said.

At one point, Obama had high hopes for the big title game, as his beloved Chicago Bears made it to the semi-final stage, but were knocked out by the Packers, the pride of Wisconsin.

Obama will be seeking a piece of the Super Bowl XLV action himself on Sunday, as he will grant a rare interview to Fox television's conservative talk show host Bill O'Reilly as part of the network's build-up to the big game.

Boehner ascends to speaker of the House with pledge to end business as usual

John Boehner of Ohio took the gavel from Nancy Pelosi after being voted as the new speaker of the House, and waited for the applause reverberating around the chamber to die down.

His first words as speaker were: “It’s still just me.”

It was a fitting introduction for the second of 12 children from a middle-class family in Cincinnati. All but one of his siblings attended the speech and sat in the gallery. Boehner, who has a reputation for cryingeasily and often, shed a few tears as he entered the chamber, but didnot break down during his remarks.

Speaking on the first day of the 112th Congress moments before new members were sworn in, he sought to strike a tone of humility in recognition of the frustration felt by many Americans at a time of high and prolonged unemployment and economic anxiety.

He made clear to the House GOP that their huge success in November, when they gained 63 seats and swept into the majority after four years of minority status, was fragile. It was a clear nod to the power of the grassroots conservative Tea Party movement, which provided the energy behind the Republican’s victory.

“The American people have humbled us. They have refreshed our memories to just how temporary the privilege of serving here is,” he said.“Everything here is on loan from them.”

He promised that the new GOP majority will be “humble in our demeanor, steady in our principles.”

Of the 435 House members, all 241 House Republicans , except for Boehner himself, who abstained. But Pelosi suffered the embarrassment of having 10 percent of the Democratic caucus , half of them for Rep. Heath Shuler, North Carolina Democrat. Pelosi received 173 votes over all.

Boehner spoke for just less than 11 minutes, and early on made mention of the nation’s looming debt of over $14 trillion. He promised that the House under his leadership would take serious steps to deal with it.

“No longer can we fall short. No longer can we kick the can down the road. The people voted to end business as usual, and today we begin to carry out their instructions,” he said.

Although Boehner and the House GOP leadership have pledged to cut $100 billion out of this year’s budget, there have already been concessions from some Republicans that they will not be able to cut more than $50 billion.

The reach of the House will still be severely limited, since Democrats control both the Senate and the White House.

Boehner reiterated most of the broader reforms that his party have committed to for months, namely allowing legislation to be placed online for three days before a vote, making committees smaller and allowing legislation to go through a more fulsome committee process, and other measures to increase transparency.

Democrats have already begun to criticize portions of the GOP rules package, such as giving House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, the power to unilaterally set spending levels.

New Controversial Book Claims That the Song Lyrics of Jay-Z Reveals the Secrets to Success for the Hip-Hop Generation

Post n°13 pubblicato il 30 Gennaio 2011 da rdhouyjekpct

"I Will Not Lose! The blueprint for greatness when good is not enough" is a street-smart self-help guide inspired by the song lyrics of Jay-Z. The book gives a unique approach to personal development, revealing how the lyrics of one of Hip-Hop's most successful artists can be a source of inspiration for a highly ambitious generation during these challenging times.

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) January 26, 2011

There has been extensive coverage in recent years of Jay-Z’s meteoric rise in the entertainment industry and the world of business, but what fans, critics and the media seem to find most intriguing about the Brooklyn born rapper is his cryptic song lyrics. Every new lyric by the rapper is met with anticipation and debate; his music continues to be a hot topic on the web and in the streets.

Author, Duane L. Lawton, has written a new self-help ebook, “I Will Not Lose! The blueprint for greatness when good is not enough” that is inspired by the song lyrics of Jay-Z. The book, whose main title is taken from a self-affirming statement of confidence that Jay-Z has famously declared out-loud in his music, champions a ‘street-smart’, think-outside-the-box approach to personal development and is aimed at readers from all walks of life that share one powerful trait -- undeterred ambition. Broken down into 7 sections, “I Will Not Lose!” lays out a complete “blueprint for greatness” for ordinary people who have extraordinary expectations for their personal lives.

In "I Will Not Lose!" Lawton devotes over 300 pages examining lyrics from more than 90 of Jay-Z's songs -- it's the most in-depth work ever written about the music of a rap artist. The author makes the argument that while Jay-Z’s lyrics are perceived as self-aggrandizing, his words actually give profound insight into what it takes to be successful in life whether you’re a platinum-selling rapper turned business mogul or a young hustler from Brooklyn with dreams of going to college or owning a business. Jay-Z used to be that guy.

Jay-Z’s lyrics about his drug-dealing past and his music’s focus on materialism has made him a target of critics who say that his work glorifies crime and violence and glamorizes an opulent lifestyle that’s out of reach for most of his listeners. Lawton, a fan of Jay-Z's music since the rapper’s debut album, Reasonable Doubt, disagrees. “Anybody who thinks Jay-Z’s lyrics are just about 'money, cash and hoes' (in reference to the title of one of Jay-Z’s biggest hits in the late 90’s) may hear his words but aren’t really listening. I think Jay’s lyrics resonate with fans because in his words he’s able to reflect on the ups and downs of ambition in a way that is universally understood. Through his lyrics, Jay-Z vividly gives a complete 'picture' of both struggle and success, in which you see yourself -- whether you’re a student, athlete, artist, street hustler, career professional or an entrepreneur.”

Lawton believes that by trivializing the lyrics of rappers, even Hip-Hop’s most gifted wordsmiths like Jay-Z,fan and critics fail to see how an artist’s words of confidence and defiance can actually have a positive impact on their own lives. Lawton: “Jay-Z is as much of an American success story as Warren Buffet, hence, his co-billing with the investment giant on the Forbes magazine cover. But the title of the book makes the message clear: ‘I Will Not Lose!’ is not about Jay-Z’s greatness, it’s about realizing yours.”

Q+A: Will Obama talk tax reform in State of the Union?

Post n°12 pubblicato il 27 Gennaio 2011 da rdhouyjekpct

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama has proposed revamping the dizzying U.S. tax code and many observers are eyeing his State of the Union address on Tuesday for signs of his commitment.

Presidential leadership is essential for such a politically and economically complex task, last successful after Republican President Ronald Reagan struck a deal with congressional Democrats for a major code rewrite in his second term in 1986.

Reagan used a State of the Union address to publicly direct advisers to make recommendations for a tax code rewrite and made it a top priority.

With Obama half way through his first term and a new election campaign looming, many see the next two years as a ground-laying phase, leaving legislation for a second term.

Here are some key questions and elements of the debate:

WHY ARE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT TAX REFORM NOW?

The fledgling economic recovery and concerns about annual deficits topping $1 trillion have pushed a tax overhaul up the economic agenda. Many budget experts note that both individual and corporate taxpayers are spending more money each year to prepare taxes -- while the government is getting less efficient at collecting.

Among the loudest voices of complaint are from big corporations, who blast the top 35 percent marginal rate, the highest in the industrialized world. Many economists and Obama officials agree with their argument that the high rate makes the U.S. less attractive relative to its peers.
