Nadal and Federer era is over, says Tsonga

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AFP) – Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Tuesday sauntered into the second round of the ATP Rotterdam Open after a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov and declared the era of domination from Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal is over.

Tsonga was joined in the second round by top seed and defending champion Robin Soderling, who dispatched Dutch wild card Robin Haase 6-3, 6-2 in less than an hour.

Wimledon finalist Tomas Berdych was equally as impressive as the Czech fourth seed beat Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 6-2 in just 52 minutes.

The eighth-seeded Tsonga who lost the 2008 Australian Open final to Novak Djokovic said that the Serb's victory in Melbourne little more than a week ago over Andy Murray marked a gate-crashing of the private party enjoyed by the Swiss and Spaniard for the last half-decade.

"Federer and Nadal are not alone (at the top of the rankings) any more," said Tsonga, who fired 11 aces in his 75-minute win over the 19-year-old Dimitrov.

"Maybe on clay, things (Nadal's victories) are still the same, but not on other surfaces.

"Djokovic and Murray are beating Nadal and Federer very often, all the players are improving their games. It's not just about Nadal and Federer any more."

Tsonga said that his present world ranking of 18 after an injury-marred 2010 season, which saw him fall out of the Top 10, was not a reflection of his present form.

"I've also improved my game but my ranking has gone backwards," he said. "I feel that I'm playing better than two or three years ago.

"I'm in good shape and taking the matches here step by step - but I still feel I have a chance to win the title," said Tsonga, who has won five ATP titles.

Dimitrov, ranked 86th, saved a match point one game from the end against Tsonga, who next plays compatriot Michael Llodra.

Third seed David Ferrer was the first top ranked player to lose as the Spaniard lost 6-3, 6-4 to Finn Jarkko Nieminen in the opening round.

Ferrer, who lost to Andy Murray in the Australian Open semi-finals after ousting compatriot Nadal in the last eight, found himself adrift indoors at the Ahoy stadium.

The world number six who won his first nine matches of the season, was unable to replicate his first-round win over Nieminen in Melbourne, exiting in 75 minutes after holding a 3-1 lead in the second set.

The 43rd-ranked Nieminen, a 2006 semifinalist here, will play Serb Viktor Troicki in the second round after improving his modest record this season to 2-3.

The victory was the first for Nieminen in a month since Doha, a victory followed by first-round defeats in Sydney and Melbourne.

Croatian seventh seed Ivan Ljubicic defeated Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 while German Philipp Kohlschreiber will play two-time French Open finalist Soderling after defeating Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan 6-4, 7-6 (7/5).

Mubarak names VP, new PM as protests rage

Post n°12 pubblicato il 07 Febbraio 2011 da rptoimzuav

Tag: primo

CAIRO (AFP) – Embattled Hosni Mubarak tapped Egypt's military intelligence chief as his first-ever vice president and named a new prime minister as tens of thousands took their deadly revolt to the streets on Saturday for a fifth day demanding that the president step down.

Fresh riots erupted in several cities. In Cairo, three people were killed, and an enraged mob killed three police in the Sinai town of Rafah.

That brought the death toll from the nationwide protests to at least 51 since Tuesday.

As the violence raged, the president went into crisis talks with officials late in the afternoon, after which news broke that army career man and Mubarak confidante General Omar Suleiman had been sworn in as his deputy.

Suleiman, 75, is chief of military intelligence and a well-known player on the world scene. He has spearheaded years of Egyptian efforts to encourage an eventual Israeli-Palestinian peace deal and of mediating internal Palestinian disputes.

The government resigned on Saturday, a step Mubarak promised overnight. Shortly after Suleiman was sworn in, Mubarak tapped the current aviation minister, Ahmed Shafiq, to form a new government.

Shafiq is respected by the Egyptian elite, even among the opposition, and has often been mooted as a potential successor to Mubarak.

Along with the demonstrations, looting broke out in the capital after the widely hated police appeared to have faded from the scene, prompting the army to call on citizens to defend themselves.

Tens of thousands of angry citizens streamed into central Cairo's Tahrir Square, one of the focal points for street battles that have raged around Egypt, chanting: "Mubarak out!" as troops looked on.

The army announced that a night-time curfew would be enforced and extended in key cities.

However, as the new 4:00 pm to 8:00 am curfew went into effect on Saturday, tens of thousands in Cairo paid no heed.

Later, the army stood back as protesters fought running battles with police in front of the interior ministry.

Hundreds of angry demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails at police near the epicentre of five days of protests, who responded with gunfire.

Witnesses said police were firing live rounds, and medics said three people had been killed in the fighting in front of the ministry.

As Mubarak stood his ground, influential Arab cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi called on him to quit, telling Al-Jazeera television he should "leave Egypt," as the "only solution to the problem."

"Leave Mubarak. Have pity on the people and get lost before the destruction spreads in Egypt," said Qaradawi, an Egyptian-born theologian and president of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, who accused Mubarak of having become "deaf, dumb and blind."

And the banned Muslim Brotherhood, the most well-organised opposition group in the country, called for a peaceful transfer of power through a transitional cabinet.

Protesters have been demanding not only Mubarak's departure but an end to endemic state corruption and police brutality that have become systematic under the president's 30-year rule.

However, steel magnate Ahmed Ezz, widely seen as a linchpin of a corrupt regime, resigned from the ruling National Democratic Party, where he was a senior member, state television reported.

But one key thing people will be watching is whether widely hated Interior Minister Habib al-Adly, who has been in office since 1997 and who is responsible for the security apparatus, will keep his job.

They have dismissed the 82-year-old's vague promises of reform as too little, too late.

The army, unlike the repressive police, is widely respected in Egypt, and its appearance on the streets was generally welcomed.

Despite the curfew, shops and offices were looted overnight, and with a thin police presence, the army called "on the Egyptian people to protect the nation, Egypt, and themselves."

That appeared to be an admission that the troops, deployed by Mubarak on Thursday, are unable to control the situation on their own.

Earlier on Saturday, young Egyptians had already formed a human chain to protect the Cairo Museum, which is located in Tahrir Square and which houses the famous Tutankhamun mask and other priceless antiquities.

And efforts were underway around the capital to organise neighbourhood watch committees.

Elsewhere, clashes erupted in the key port city of Ismailiya, northeast of the capital, where thousands of workers fought running battles with police.

In Alexandria, hundreds of people camped out by the main mosque in the centre of the Mediterranean city vowing to protest again, with several police stations still burning amid sporadic looting.

As in Cairo, tanks were deployed and the police were absent. Civilians directed traffic and conducted clean-up efforts.

Despite the ongoing protests, two Cairo mobile phone networks came back on line on Saturday, a day after all Egyptian operators were told to cut services.

But Internet access appeared still to be cut by late afternoon.

US President Barack Obama called on the Egyptian authorities not to use violence against the political protests, driving home his message in a 30-minute phone call with Mubarak.

He urged Mubarak to take "concrete" steps towards political reforms, saying he must turn "a moment of volatility" into "a moment of promise."

Later on Saturday, State Department spokesman Philip Crowley repeated concerns about the unrest.

"With protesters still on the streets of Egypt, we remain concerned about the potential for violence and again urge restraint on all sides," he wrote on Twitter.

"The people of Egypt no longer accept the status quo. They are looking to their government for a meaningful process to foster real reform," he wrote in a second message on the micro-blogging service.

Washington has toughened its line on a key Middle Eastern ally, warning Egypt it would review billions of dollars in aid based on the behaviour of its security forces.

Egypt is one of the world's largest recipients of US aid, receiving $1.3 billion annually in military assistance alone.

The demonstrations, inspired by events in Tunisia, are the largest in Egypt in the three decades of Mubarak's rule, sending shock waves across the region.

At least 1,500 civilians and 1,000 police have been injured since Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the outside world was reacting nervously to events in Egypt.

Travel agencies postponed departures for popular tourist destination on Saturday, as capitals issued new warnings to their citizens to avoid visiting the country.

On Saturday, the Saudi stock market, the Arab world's largest, dropped 6.43 percent on the soaring tensions in Egypt.

And the Cairo exchange, which was due due to start a new week of trading on Sunday after losing at least 10 percent this week, said it will remain closed for the day along with the nation's banks.

Sharapova makes rare Russia Fed Cup appearance

Post n°10 pubblicato il 06 Febbraio 2011 da rptoimzuav

PARIS (AFP) – Maria Sharapova hopes her first Fed Cup outing in three years will help erase the misery of her latest Grand Slam blow-out.

The three-time major winner, and former world number one who has struggled to rediscover her best form since a 2008 shoulder injury, suffered a tame fourth round defeat at the Australian Open.

Her straight sets defeat to Germany's Andrea Petkovic in the heat of Melbourne has now given way to the chilly streets of Moscow where Russia open their 2011 Fed Cup World Group campaign against France on Saturday.

"Cold, cold, cold," wrote Sharapova on her Facebook page.

"Just spent the last week in Munich training and now I am off to Moscow for Fed Cup. I am looking forward to getting on the court and competing, did not like that feeling I had walking off the court last time I played."

Sharapova, who will share singles duties with Svetlana Kuznetsova, is making her first Fed Cup appearance since 2008.

France have been hit by the absence of their top two, Marion Bartoli and Aravane Rezai, leaving Alize Cornet as the team's leading player.

Four-time champions Russia have won the most recent two ties between the nations, but France triumphed on their last visit to Moscow's Olympic Stadium in 2003.

Australia, with a challenge spearheaded by world number five Samantha Stosur, aim to celebrate their return to the World Group after a six-year absence, by stunning champions Italy.

But Stosur and teammates Jarmila Groth, Anastasia Rodionova and Rennae Stubbs, will have their work cut out against an Italian team who have won the title three times in the last five years.

Groth, in her debut for team Australia, started with a win over the world number four Schiavone, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3, to give Australia an early lead.

Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters leads Belgium against the USA in Antwerp in a tie stripped of other Grand Slam talent.

Compatriot Justine Henin has retired for a second time while Serena and Venus Williams, both injured, do not figure in the American squad.

But the USA have reached the Fed Cup final for the last two years, losing on both occasions to Italy, without the services of either Williams sister.

American captain Mary Joe Fernandez puts the success of her squad down to team spirit.

"Everybody can pretty much do it all," said Fernandez. "This was a very young team a couple of years ago and they have come a long way."

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Melanie Oudin are likely to be the sines choices while Clijsters will share duties with world 26, Yanina Wickmayer.

The weekend's other World Group I tie sees Slovakia face Czech Republic in Bratislava with the visitors boasting a 3-0 career record over their neighbours.

Bellagio heist soured quickly for accused bandit

Post n°9 pubblicato il 05 Febbraio 2011 da rptoimzuav

LAS VEGAS – The scenes that led to the Bellagio bandit's downfall look less like "Ocean's Eleven" and more like "America's Dumbest Criminals." Bragging about a big gambling score with high school buddies over rounds of shots in Colorado. E-mailing pictures to a total stranger — dated and signed "Biker Bandit" with two $25,000 Bellagio chips.

Losing $105,000 gambling at the scene of the crime in Las Vegas, but cashing out nearly $209,000 and apparently hoping the casino wouldn't notice.

The deceptively simple burglary lit up the Internet — appealing to anyone who's ever had fantasies about pulling off a major score against a casino giant. But police say Anthony Carleo's shoddy plan after stealing $1.5 million in chips unfolded like a badly played poker hand.

"At one point I think he asked me, 'What do I do?'" said Matthew Brooks, a poker enthusiast from Washington, D.C., who went to the FBI after trading e-mails and phone calls with Carleo. "And I'm like, 'I don't know what to tell you, man.'"

Carleo, the 29-year-old son of a Las Vegas municipal judge, declined to comment to reporters Friday.

Police say he's the helmeted bandit who entered the Bellagio on Dec. 14, brandished a gun and made off on a motorcycle with the chips in denominations from $100 to $25,000. He was arrested Wednesday, a day after an undercover officer bought four $25,000 chips from him, then offered an invitation — to become part of a crew that would rob casinos, including the Bellagio.

Carleo's response to officers: He'd already robbed the place.

In between the brazen heist and the arrest, as Carleo gambled and partied, the cops were hot on his tail, according to an arrest report.

Two days before Christmas, Bellagio security told police that a bell-ringer for the Salvation Army tried to cash a $25,000 chip along with a friend. The worker told police the chip was dropped into his pocket from an unknown man while he took donations from a walkway between the MGM Grand and New York-New York casinos on the Las Vegas Strip.

Police confiscated the chip.

Just after Christmas, Carleo spent time in his childhood hometown of Pueblo, Colo., buying "beer and shots for everybody," according to a friend.

"He had a lot of money on him and he told us, you know he lives in Vegas and that he had just gotten lucky gambling and that he won $80,000 gambling," Tiana Woodruff told Pueblo station KOAA-TV.

By New Year's Eve, Carleo was back at the Bellagio, losing $72,000 in one night and spending a week in January at the casino living for free on the casino's dime as a high roller.

A source told police that Carleo liked to play poker and frequented the Bellagio's no-limit Texas Hold 'em tables with $10 and $20 minimum bets.

On Jan. 4, Carleo lost an $11,000 pot, then left and came back a short time later with $5,000 in chips, the source said.

His activity at the tables didn't match what he was cashing out, and casino workers noticed.

Casino chips are like gift cards — they're extremely limited in where they can be redeemed. And the Bellagio swiftly replaced its line of $25,000 chips on the floor and announced they would no longer circulate those like the ones stolen.

That's why Carleo was trying to get rid of his them on a secondary market, and he sold stolen chips to an undercover officer twice in the days before he was arrested.

After losing big at the Bellagio, Carleo told people he knew from the poker tables he was behind the heist. A police informant told officers he'd heard about Carleo from a friend.

"The friend also told the confidential informant that Carleo had mentioned that he was hurting for money and might have to do something drastic in the next several days," the report said.

On Jan. 16, Carleo approached Brooks on Two Plus Two, a popular Web forum where the heist was a hot topic, with players discussing how the bandit might try to turn his chips into real money, Brooks said. Eventually, they talked by phone.

At first, Carleo spoke vaguely at first about the chips, Brooks said, but gradually he became more specific.

"That's when I kind of got more pointed in questions and asked specifically: 'Did you do this? Is this your deal or did you just get some of the chips and you know the guy?' And he said, 'No that's me,'" said Brooks, 29.

Carleo e-mailed several pictures to Brooks depicting two $25,000 Bellagio chips — affectionately known as "cranberries" to gamblers because of their color.

"Cranberries are good for the liver!" reads the postscript on the note in the picture.

Brooks called the FBI, local police and the casino.

Carleo was arrested Wednesday night without resisting, and admitted his involvement in the robbery, police said.

Despite the suspect's seemingly unplanned actions after the heist, his return to the Bellagio wasn't all that surprising, said Dave Schwartz, a former casino security officer in Atlantic City who now runs the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Usually, he said, casino burglars come back to the scene of the crime to cash in chips or to try to steal more.

Schwartz said the case showed how casinos and police are more measured and methodical than hasty when it comes to catching casino thieves.

"It's not like they're going to chase the guy down in a shootout or do that kind of stuff, but they are going to follow through and eventually lead people to get tripped up," Schwartz said. "You've got to wonder what you can get away with."

It was evident, Brooks said, that Carleo didn't have much of a plan.

"It was not Brad Pitt talking to me," he said, referring to one of the stars of heist film "Ocean's Eleven." "It was not George Clooney."
