Johnson: Feingold a rubber stamp, not a 'maverick'

Republican Ron Johnson’s senatorial campaign is attacking Democrat Russ Feingold’s self-proclaimed title of “maverick,” saying the incumbent should have done more to represent Wisconsin’s interests.

A new ad released Wednesday shows Feingold calling himself a maverick, then goes on to highlight the senator’s party line votes on health care, the stimulus bill and to raise the debt limit.

“Senator Feingold claims to be a maverick, but the people of Wisconsin could have used a real maverick when he cast the deciding vote for the failed stimulus bill and the government takeover of health care,” said Johnson’s spokesperson Sara Sendek. “Wisconsinites deserve a leader who will stand with them, not the special interests and party bosses in Washington.”

The latest poll released Monday shows Johnson leading by seven points.
