France beat Argentina to reach Davis Cup final

Post n°6 pubblicato il 18 Settembre 2010 da trdkfmnubaq

LYON, France (Reuters) – Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clement's expertise in the doubles was too much for Argentina's Eduardo Schwank and Horacio Zeballos on Saturday when France clinched a 3-0 win to power into the Davis Cup final.

France, who got off to a perfect start on Friday with singles victories by Llodra and Gael Monfils, will face either Serbia away or Czech Republic at home in the December 3-5 final.

Although they were without their injured number one Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Guy Forget's team, who beat holders Spain in the previous round, went on the attack in all their three matches, backed by a loud Palais des Sports crowd.

"I am very proud, they're all here together, the seven of them, those who played and those who also contributed to this victory," captain Forget said in a courtside interview as Monfils, substitute Gilles Simon, Richard Gasquet, Tsonga and Julien Benneteau congratulated the day's winners.

"There is still a great tie to be played," Forget added.

Clement and Llodra, pairing up in the men's team event for the first time since 2008, quickly found their marks, bagging the opening set with a spectacular point at the net.

The pair, who won the 2007 Wimbledon title together, raced to a 2-0, 40-0 lead in the second but became over-confident and let their opponents back into the match.

But Llodra was too strong at the net, Clement too precise on his service returns, for them to be really threatened and they pocketed the second set with a decisive break in the 12th game.

GOOD WINE

Schwank and Zeballos continued to struggle at the net in the third and found themselves trailing 5-2.

Dozens of Argentina fans stood up and yelled their support to try to inspire a fightback and they held serve to reach 5-3.

However, the respite was short and a Llodra service winner clinched a deserved victory for the home side after two hours 29 minutes.

"This is fabulous. I am, with my mates, in the Davis Cup final, now with my mate Arnaud, I'm so happy," said Llodra as many of the 6,000 fans waved French flags in the same arena where France won the Davis Cup final back in 1991.

"We're like good wine, we get better with age."

The 32-year-old Clement was grateful to get the chance to play a part in the team's victory.

"I know I'm also here because others were injured. I now want everybody to be fit for the final so that Guy (Forget) can pick the best ones," he said.

Argentina captain Tito Vazquez did not expect the match to turn out the way it did.

"I could not imagine the score would be that harsh, although I knew the French were strong," he told reporters. "Things would have been different if we had been at 1-1 Friday night."

Monfils, a 6-4 2-6 6-4 6-3 winner over David Nalbandian on Friday, is due to play Juan Monaco in the reverse singles on Sunday when Llodra, who beat Monaco 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-3, is due to play Nalbandian.

Limbless Frenchman swims Channel

Post n°5 pubblicato il 18 Settembre 2010 da trdkfmnubaq

LILLE, France (AFP) – A Frenchman who lost all his limbs in an electrical accident successfully swam across the Channel on Saturday, a challenge he has been preparing for two years, his support team said.

Philippe Croizon, 42, set off from Folkestone in southern England just before 8:00 am (0600 GMT) and arrived on the French coast just before 9:30 pm (0730 GMT), propelled by his specially designed flipper-shaped prosthetic legs.

According to an official, Croizon landed on a rock at the bottom of a cliff near the Wissant coast in Calais and his support team said he immediately boarded a boat heading to Britain.

Steadying himself with the stumps of his arms, he was advancing at a constant speed in good weather, his support team said, adding that he was in good form and had been accompanied by dolphins for part of the crossing.

Croizon swims at around three kilometres (two miles) per hour, slightly slower than the four or five kilometres per hour that an able-bodied athlete might achieve.

In 1994 the metalworker was hit by a 20,000 volt charge as he attempted to remove a television aerial from a house roof and an arc of current surged through him from a nearby powerline.

Doctors were forced to amputate his limbs. As he recovered in hospital he saw a television documentary about a Channel swimmer and an ambition was born.

The father of two said he wanted to complete the dare "for myself, my family and all my fellows in misfortune who have lost their taste for life".

Croizon trained for his feat for two years and last month completed a 12-hour swim between the ports of Noirmoutier and Pornic on France's Atlantic coast.

McManus saves Scotland's blushes in stoppage time

Post n°2 pubblicato il 08 Settembre 2010 da trdkfmnubaq

GLASGOW (AFP) – A goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time from Stephen McManus saved Scotland's blushes as they struggled to a 2-1 Euro 2012 qualifier win over lowly Liechtenstein at Hampden here on Tuesday.

Liechtenstein, with a population less than the crowd packed into the national stadium, stunned their hosts when they took the lead 60 seconds after the break through captain Mario Flick.

Kenny Miller ended a 12-game goal-drought for the national side when he fired Scotland level in this Group I fixture with a superb volley in the 63rd minute.

With Scotland heading towards their most embarrassing result ever it was Middlesbrough's McManus who appeared at the back post to send a header past Peter Jehle deep into injury time, much to the angry of the Liechtenstein contingent.

"They show five minutes of additional time on the board and actually seven extra minutes were played. I can live with maybe half a minute more but not as it was," Liechtenstein manager Hans-Peter Zaugg said.

"We as such a small nation, as such minnows, played a fantastic game here." Craig Levein was relieved with the win over a side that sits 100 places below them in the world rankings.

"Obviously I'm a very happy man. The facts and the stats will show that we are top of the group with four points and that for me is the most important thing," the Scotland boss said.

"The criticism will be, and I can understand it, levelled at our performance but I'd like to make a point of complimenting Liechtenstein on the way they played."

At Hampden Levein made three changes to the side that drew with Lithuania.

Scotland made a bright start and were presented with their first chance when Alan Hutton was fouled on the right wing, earning Liechtenstein's Franz Burgmeier a yellow card.

James McFadden whipped in the resultant free-kick which was met by Lee McCulloch but he bulleted his header over.

Darren Fletcher, who was winning his 50th cap, sent a ball over the top from the half-way line which evaded the Liechtenstein defence but had too much pace for Miller.

Scotland didn't have it all their own way and Burgmeier carved out a chance for the minnows when he teed up Michele Polverino but his low drive from 25 yards went well wide.

Miller showed great skill to beat two defenders on the right wing before picking out his strike partner at the far post but Yves Oehri did enough to put Boyd off his header.

Frustrations began to show for Scotland and it was Liechtenstein who had the first shot on target in the 43rd minute when Sandro Wieser sent his effort from the edge of the box straight into the arms of Allan McGregor.

Scotland brought on James Morrison for McFadden at the break but disaster struck within 60 seconds of the restart when lowly Liechtenstein took the lead.

Captain Flick controlled David Hasler's cross in the box before bending a shot from 12 yards into the top left-hand corner of the net past the outstretched hand of McGregor.

A stunned Scotland soon had to make a change as Barry Robson replaced the injured Lee Wallace.

The hosts' first shot on target fell to captain Fletcher and his fierce side-footed half-volley drew a superb save from Jehle.

Scotland hauled themselves level with a superb strike from Miller in the 63rd minute.

Robson's cross from the left was only cleared as far as the Rangers striker who smashed an angled volley in the top right-hand corner. With the game deep in injury time McManus rose to meet Robson's corner and the defender sent his header past the despairing Jehle to seal the last gasp win for the Scots.
