US general in Afghan war to see Obama over remarks

With the ramped-up war in Afghanistan at a precarious moment, President Barack Obama prepared to hear his top war commander explain biting published complaints about the commander in chief and his aides. Even before their showdown, the White House's rebuke of Gen. Stanley McChrystal suggested it would be hard for him to save his job.

On a summons from Obama, McChrystal flew to Washington from Afghanistan to see his boss in person Wednesday, first in the Oval Office movie posters and then in the president's regular monthly war meeting, in which McChrystal usually participates by videoconference.

Two military officials said McChrystal was prepared to submit his resignation. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Obama was set to make an announcement on McChrystal's future soon after their face-to-face.

"I think sports posters it's clear that the article in which he and his team appeared ... showed poor judgment," Obama said Tuesday at the close of an unrelated Cabinet meeting. "But I also want to make sure that I talk to him directly before I make any final decisions."

Afghan President Hamid Karzai expressed his confidence in McChrystal during a video conference music posters Tuesday night with Obama, Karzai spokesman Waheed Omar said Wednesday in Kabul.

"We hope there is not a change of leadership of the international forces here in Afghanistan and that we continue to partner with Gen. McChrystal," Omar told reporters.

In a Rolling Stone magazine article, McChrystal didn't criticize Obama himself but motivational posters called the period last fall when the president was deciding whether to approve more troops "painful" and said Obama appeared ready to hand him an "unsellable" position.

McChrystal also said he was "betrayed" by Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, the man the White House chose to be his diplomatic partner in Afghanistan. He accused Eikenberry of raising doubts about the reliability of Afghan President Hamid Karzai only to give himself cover in case the U.S. effort failed. "Now, if we fail, they vintage posters can say 'I told you so,'" McChrystal told the magazine. And he was quoted mocking Vice President Joe Biden.

If not insubordination, the remarks - as well as even sharper commentary about Obama and his White House from several in McChrystal's inner circle web hosting review - were at least an indirect and extraordinary challenge and one that consumed Washington on Tuesday. Jamaica urges calm after nabbing top fugitive

Hunted by security forces across Jamaica, reputed drug baron Christopher "Dudus" Coke sought out a preacher's advice and tried to turn himself in to U.S. marshals. He was caught by police at a highway checkpoint before he could get there.

The 42-year-old Coke, who faces trial in New York on drug-trafficking and gunrunning clean registry charges, is said to fear suffering the same fate as his father, a gang leader who died in a prison fire in 1992 while awaiting extradition to the U.S. on drug charges.

Ellington said Coke was caught by police manning a vehicle checkpoint along a highway, but added that other "circumstances registry fix of (Coke's) arrest are being investigated." He said police were acting on intelligence.

The Rev. Al Miller, an influential evangelical preacher who facilitated the surrender of Coke's brother earlier this month, told The Associated Press that Coke was heading to surrender to authorities at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston when police stopped his convoy on a highway outside the capital.

"A contact was made on his behalf that he wanted to give himself in," Miller said. Miller said police took Coke to the nearby Spanish Town police headquarters, then flew him to Kingston.

A phone listed for Coke's lead attorney, Don Foote, went unanswered.
