Okla. woman asking to keep disabled kangaroo

Post n°17 pubblicato il 03 Aprile 2011 da tvajienhryl

An Oklahoma woman suffering from depression has found solace in the company of an unusual companion, but local city officials worry that the therapy pet — a partially paralyzed kangaroo — could become a public safety risk.

Christie Carr is seeking an exemption from the Broken Arrow City Council to keep Irwin, a 25-pound great red kangaroo that she cares for much like a child. Irwin rides in a car seat, is dressed in a shirt and pants each day and is rarely away from his doting caretaker.

At the advice of her therapist, Carr began volunteering at a local animal sanctuary, where she met Irwin, then just a baby. Less than a week later, the kangaroo named for famed Australian animal expert Steve Irwin ran into a fence, fracturing his neck and causing severe brain damage.

Carr volunteered to take the animal home and, while nursing him back to health, developed a bond. Irwin cannot stand or walk on his own, although he is slowly gaining back mobility and can hop three or four times in a row with assistance, she said.

"Irwin will not live if I have to give him up," Carr said, adding that she would rather leave town. "I can't imagine a day living without him."

Native to Australia, healthy male great red kangaroos can grow up to 7 feet tall, weigh more than 200 pounds and bound 25 feet in a single leap. But because of his accident, Irwin isn't expected to get larger than 50 pounds, his veterinarian, Dr. Lesleigh Cash Warren, wrote in a letter to the council supporting Carr's request to keep him.

Neutering has also lessened any chance he will become aggressive.

"Irwin cannot be judged as any normal kangaroo," Warren wrote. "He is a unique animal due to his disabilities and will require a lifetime of care and concern for his welfare."

Carr, who is unable to work because of her health, changes Irwin's diaper several times a day. She feeds him salad, raw veggies, kangaroo chow, popcorn and the occasional Cheez-Its or a handful of Cheetos.

The marsupial never leaves the house without first getting dressed. The clothes — a little boy's shirt cut and sewed to accommodate his neck, sometimes a tie, and jeans or slacks with a hole cut for the tail_ are necessary for therapeutic reasons and to protect him against germs, Carr said.

The 1-year-old animal never leaves Carr's side for more than an hour, often accompanying her on errands and going out to eat. He rides in a car seat before being placed in a pouch when going out in public. Carr's therapist certified the animal as a therapy pet under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Broken Arrow Mayor Mike Lester said he worries what could happen if Irwin is able to regain full mobility. The council last week delayed considering the issue until an April 19 meeting, to give City Attorney Beth Anne Wilkening and other staff time to research the issue.

"There's just a myriad of things we need to consider," Lester said.

Every exception made sets a precedent, and the council must take that into consideration, Wilkening said. The council may decide to create an exotic animal review committee that would look at each animal on a case-by-case basis, he said.

Broken Arrow Nursing Home owner Joanna Cooper said she doesn't understand why keeping Irwin has become an issue. Carr has brought Irwin to the nursing home in the past for residents to hold and pet. Several residents of the nursing home plan to attend the upcoming council meeting with signs to show their support for Carr and Irwin.

"Why are people giving her problems when people have tigers and pit bulls?" Copper said.

Pennsylvania zoo euthanizes one of country's oldest male lions

s website.

Juma had been confiscated from a private breeder in Ohio after local farmers complained to the sheriff's office about him escaping from his enclosure and eating poultry, the statement said.

During the past year, the lion had been suffering and stopped eating a week before he was euthanized.

"He had a lot of age-related illnesses and also feline dementia, which is not uncommon since he was very old," said Tracy Gray, a zoo spokeswoman.

Dr. Stephanie James, the zoo's director of animal health, said the animal "would sometimes forget where he was and look around like he was lost."

Zoo keepers tried to encourage him to eat by giving him his favorite food, ground turkey, but he consumed only a few ounces of his usual seven pounds, she said.

Shiba, a female lion who was Juma's companion, spent hours grooming and stayed close to him before he died, Kathy Suthard, lead carnivore keeper, said in a statement.

Obama to put spotlight on energy

Post n°15 pubblicato il 03 Aprile 2011 da tvajienhryl

President Barack Obama will on Wednesday seek to wrest the political debate from turmoil in the Middle East, to a related topic -- cutting America's thirst for foreign oil.

Obama will make a speech at Georgetown University in Washington to outline his plan to forge energy security for the United States, launching a string of events designed to drum up support for a key piece of his agenda.

Since his State of the Union address in January, Obama has hammered away at the themes of education and job creation, yet events in the Arab world, and after Japan's quake-tsunami tragedy, kept pulling him off topic.

"The speech will mark a transition in our public communications, and kick off a concerted effort around energy security," a senior US official said on condition of anonymity.

Obama will stress four areas where the United States needs to forge progress to reach a goal to cut the amount of oil that the country imports from overseas by a third in 10 years, another official said.

As a candidate and as president, Obama has several times laid out plans to cut US dependence on insecure foreign energy sources, and to wean itself off supplies from nations like Venezuela or regions like the Middle East.

Energy policy, especially in the area of rising gasoline prices has the capacity to be a key political issue over the next year, and into 2012 when Obama runs for a second four-year term.

Administration officials say they want to frame an energy policy that will mean the United States has to import less oil from volatile places such as the Middle East, and to be more self-sufficient in meeting its power needs.

Obama will highlight domestic oil production and argue that huge areas of available oil field leases have not been tapped by the industry.

He will emphasize that the United States also has large reserves of natural gas, which could be developed responsibly, and stress the growing importance of biofuels in feeding US energy needs.

The president will also stress efficiencies, after mandating large cuts in the amount of gas cars use in the first two years of his administration, with new targets for the years 2017 to 2025 expected in September.

Officials said Obama would not make any change to his policy on nuclear power, as debate on the power source rages in the aftermath of a crisis at an atomic plant in Japan damaged by an earthquake and tsunami disaster.

Obama says that nuclear power, given appropriate safety safeguards, is one aspect of a broad menu of energy sources that include natural gas, solar power and renewable energy.

Some analysts see the energy debate as one area in which Obama could find grounds for cooperation with his Republican foes in Congress.

However, Republicans accuse Obama of putting vast areas of potential oil exploration off limits to prospecting, for environmental reasons.

The Republican majority in the House of Representatives has put forward three bills to expand offshore energy production, which it says will create jobs, lower energy prices and lessen US dependence on foreign energy.

The top Republican in the Senate, Mitch McConnell meanwhile accused the administration Tuesday of cancelling dozens of oil and gas leases all across America and of barring projects in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska.

Toyota restricts parts orders; Honda cuts output

Post n°14 pubblicato il 01 Aprile 2011 da tvajienhryl

Shortages of auto parts from Japan are hitting North American operations at Honda and Toyota.

Toyota Motor Corp. on Tuesday said it wants its U.S. car dealers to stop ordering more than 200 replacement parts made in Japan because it's worried about running out of them. And Honda Motor Co. said it will temporarily cut production at its North American auto factories starting Wednesday due to shortages.

It's all because of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan and its huge auto industry. The quake damaged many parts supply companies that make key components for cars and trucks in the U.S. and other countries. Industry analysts expect many automakers to run into shortages until production returns to normal. No one's certain when that will be.

Already several automakers have been forced to cut production. Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Co. and others have stopped taking orders for certain paint colors because a specialized pigment factory hasn't been able to come back on line.

Toyota has restricted orders for some Japanese components made at more severely damaged plants to make sure they remain available.

It has told U.S. dealers they can't order 233 parts for Lexus, Scion and Toyota models unless they have a customer who needs one for a repair.

Dealers said the parts include brake rotors, body panels, shock absorbers and other components. They mainly are for the Prius gas-electric hybrid and hybrid versions of the Highlander SUV, and the Camry midsize sedan.

Toyota spokesman Steve Curtis said he did not know specifically which models were affected.

"We are asking the dealers to refrain from ordering parts in excess of what they need," he said.

Parts managers at some dealerships may have ordered additional parts made in Japan in anticipation of shortages, and those orders could cause Toyota to run short, said Earl Stewart, who owns a Toyota dealership in North Palm Beach, Florida.

"It's not necessarily being a bad guy. It's just doing your job," Stewart said. "If everybody decides to stock up in advance, it's kind of like hoarding and suddenly there's a shortage."

About 70 percent of Toyota cars and trucks sold in the U.S. are built in North America, but roughly one in four parts in those vehicles still come from factories in Japan.

Production of most replacement parts resumed in Japan on March 17, and Toyota began shipping them to the U.S. soon after.

Meanwhile, Honda has run short of some engine, transmission and electrical parts that come from Japan. As a result, it will cut the number of hours that some North American assembly lines operate each day. Cuts will vary by plant and model, but Honda would not say how many hours it would cut from production schedules, or what models would be affected the most.

Honda has factories in Ohio, Indiana, Alabama, Georgia and Canada.

Like Toyota, most of Honda's parts for cars build in North America come from suppliers in the region. But some are still imported.

"Our North American suppliers can pretty much supply virtually the whole car, but you've got to have every part," said Honda spokesman Ed Miller.

Employees have the option of staying at the plant and being paid during the shutdown hours, taking vacation time, or taking time off without pay.

Much of Japan's auto industry — the second largest supplier of cars in the world — remains idle weeks after the earthquake. Few plants were seriously damaged by the quake, but with supplies of water and electricity fleeting, no one can say when factories will crank up. Some analysts say it could be as late as this summer.

The uncertainly has suppliers, automakers and dealers scrambling. And it exposes the vulnerability of the world's most complex supply chain, where 3,000 parts go into single car or truck. Each one of those parts is made up of hundreds of other pieces supplied by multiple companies. All it takes is one part to go missing or arrive late, and a vehicle can't be built.

Goldman Sachs estimates the shutdowns are costing the Japan automakers $200 million a day, which adds up to $2.8 billion for just the past two weeks. Each week of continued shutdowns costs $1.4 billion. By comparison, Toyota made $2.3 billion in all of 2010, and its sudden acceleration recalls cost $2 billion.

AP Auto Writer Sharon Silke Carty contributed to this report.
