Secure the Call Announces 2011 Earth Month Cell Phone Drive Program

Post n°13 pubblicato il 01 Aprile 2011 da tvajienhryl

With Earth Day coming up in April, now is the perfect time to do something useful with those old cell phones that are just sitting in drawers,” said STC President Mike Morgan.“Not only can you do something that significantly benefitsthe environment, you give potentially life-saving assistance to at-risk seniors at the same time.“STC hopes to give a free cell phone to anyone who takes the safety refresher course and who does not have a cell phone to contact “911” in case of an emergency. The class, offered to seniors throughout the country, is a 6-hour refresher program designed to improve driver safety among seniors.

Holding a one month cell drive could not be easier.STC provides organizations with a collection barrel and everything else that they need to hold a successful drive.    Companies interested in starting a drive should sign up at .Individuals who want to donate one or more phones can also download a return label and send it to STC directly.

is a 501(c)(3) charity, organized in 2003, which collects and re-distributes thousands of unwanted cell phones annually. After donated phones have been charged and purged of all personal data they are packaged with directions and sent to one of 400 Community Partners around the country who give the phones free of charge to needy and at-risk seniors and domestic abuse victims in 47 states.

Sri Lanka rise to England challenge in W.Cup quarters

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara hopes fit-again spinner Muttiah Muralitharan rises to the challenge of a World Cup quarter-final against England on Saturday.

Sangakkara said the 38-year-old off-spinner, who will retire from international cricket after the tournament, was fully fit for the R. Premadasa stadium clash.

Muralitharan, who has a world record of 530 one-day wickets, injured his hamstring during Sri Lanka's impressive 112-run win over New Zealand last week, but has since recovered.

The wily off-spinner is the only survivor of Sri Lanka's historic five-wicket win over England in the 1996 quarter-final -- one of Sri Lanka's two wins over their opponents in eight World Cup matches.

Muralitharan took two wickets in that match in Faisalabad before Sri Lanka went on to capture their only World Cup title.

"Muralitharan is a hundred percent fit. He is a guy who rises to the occasion and we are confident about what he can do for us in this crucial match," said Sangakkara on Friday.

Sangakkara refused to believe that the pressure will only be on Sri Lanka, playing before a packed 35,000 crowd.

"I don't think the pressure will only be on us. All sides feel the intensity and pressure of a big match with the incentive of a semi-final place involved," said Sangakkara, whose team finished runners-up to Australia in 2007 World Cup held in the Caribbean.

Sangakkara said England have proven their worth in the group stages.

"England are one of the best sides and they have proven it in the tournament so expect nothing less than their best," said Sangakkara, praising England's batting and bowling.

In Jonathan Trott (336 runs) and captain Andrew Strauss (329), England have two quality batsmen but their bowling has been a weak link.

The Ashes winners, who have yet to win the World Cup, opened the tournament with a tied match against India, lost to both Ireland and Bangladesh but still beat South Africa to qualify for the last eight.

With Graeme Swann (12 wickets) and James Tredwell, who took a match-winning four wickets in the decisive Group B win over the West Indies, England have two quality spinners.

"If we do progress in this tournament, we've got to be a lot better than we have been. We're not going to hide from that," said Strauss.

England have suffered a stream of injuries in the tournament having seen ace batsman Kevin Pietersen (hernia), pacemen Stuart Broad (side strain) and Ajmal Shahzad (hamstring) forced out.

All-rounder Michael Yardy then pulled out due to depression, forcing England to bring in leg-spinner Adil Rashid, who won't make it from the Caribbean, where he has been touring with the England second-string, in time for the match.

England will also hope Tim Bresnen recovers fully from a calf niggle.

If not, medium pacer Jade Dernbach, flown in as replacement earlier this week, could get a chance.

The winner of Sri Lanka-England quarter-final will meet the winner of the South Africa-New Zealand clash in the first semi-final in Colombo on March 29.

India and Pakistan meet in the second semi-final in Mohali on March 30.

German spoiler Petkovic beats tennis ace Wozniacki

Post n°11 pubblicato il 29 Marzo 2011 da tvajienhryl

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki's dream of a coast-to-coast title double hit the wall Monday as as the top seed at the ATP and WTA Miami Masters was upset 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 by Germany's colourful Andrea Petkovic.

The winner, already an internet, YouTube and Twitter personality thanks to her prodigious use of social media, performed a snippet of her jiggy "Petkorazzi" victory dance after the upset in just under two and a half hours.

Petkovic, ranked 23rd and who made a quarter-final at the Australian Open, needed an hour to win the opening set agianst Wozniacki, who claimed the Indian Wells Masters in California eight days ago and had been bidding to repeat on the East coast in Florida.

Petkovic went up 4-2 in the third set on a break and three games later was into the quarter-finals after firing her third ace of the afternoon on match point. She faced 17 break points but saved 12 of them against the world number one Dane.

Russian 16th seed Maria Sharapova also took out a leading seed as she beat Australia's French Open finalist Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-1.

The Australian who lost the Roland Garros final last year to Francesca Schiavone suffered with five double-faults and no aces in a contest lasting 81 minutes.

US-based Russian Sharapova refused to give Stosur an early birthday present as the Australian, who turns 27 on Wednesday, was broken five times.

"I have a good record against her, but it's not something that you typically look at going into the match," said Sharapova, who missed months over the past few seasons with a shoulder injury which eventually required surgery.

"I know that she's a very tough player.

"She's number five in the world, you can't take that for granted going out on the court. Her serve is one of her biggest weapons. She has a great kick out there and gets more spin than anyone on tour.

"She'll hang in there with you and she'll be tough. She's at her spot for a reason. She's a grand slam finalist and does really well on clay, and many other surfaces, as well."

Stosur's loss left her short of her performances at the last two editions at Crandon Park, where she reached the quarter-finals.

Two-time Miami finalist Sharapova saved three of the four break points she faced as clouds gathered over the stadium prior to possible forecast rain.

Sharapova produced her best result so far this year at Indian Wells this month as she played her first semi-final since last August.

The Russian who owns three Grand Slam titles improved to 20-20 against Top five players, and broke a loss streak against the elite after going down in her last six against top players.

In another women's result, Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru bet China's Peng Shuai 6-3, 6-4.

On the men's side, seventh-seeded Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych beat Argentine Carlos Berlocq 7-6 (10/8), 7-5. Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia beat German Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 6-3 in their third-round contest.

Admissions Q&A: Cambridge

Post n°10 pubblicato il 16 Febbraio 2011 da tvajienhryl

Tag: attimo

The University of Cambridge has the distinction of being one of the oldest universities in Europe. By comparison, its Judge Business School is brand new. Cambridge entered Bloomberg Businessweek's list of top MBA programs at number 10 in 2010. The 800-year old university opened the Judge school in 1990 and offers a one-year MBA program. Judge hosts a small, distinctly international student body. About 160 applicants enter the full-time MBA program each year, compared to around 580 at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business and 400 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management.

Conrad Chua, Judge's head of MBA recruitment and admissions, notes that 94 percent of Cambridge MBA students come from outside the U.K. They speak an average of three languages, with no single nationality dominating the population, he says. Students from the U.S. and India each account for 12 percent of the MBAcandidates -- the largest concentrations. A majority of Judge graduates goes on to work in Western Europe (62 percent), followed by Asia (28 percent) and the U.S. (8 percent).

Chua spoke to Bloomberg Businessweek's Erin Zlomek about what potential students can expect from the Judge program and what they might encounter during the application process. Here are edited excerpts of their conversation:

What is unique about the Cambridge MBA program?

The people we select tend to have more work experience than those in U.S. schools. On average our students have between six and seven years of experience and the average age is 30. The academic side is much more intense because we cover everything that a two-year MBA does within one year. We feel work experience adds a different element to the learning process, and there is a lot of learning from fellow classmates.

The other thing which I think is quite different is that there is a lot ofintensive project work. Students do three projects throughout the year. Two of them are consulting projects. In the first, every student has to work with a local organization. At the end of the second term, groups of students work with global organizations for about four to five weeks. At the end of the year, there's a final project that students again have to do in groups.

Why might North Americans want to consider attending Cambridge's MBA program?

For the geographic diversity. Within a short period of time, you get to learn about global businesses and global economic development in a way that you can't get exposed to in the U.S. Or at least (not) to the same degree. If you look at how businesses and organizations in the U.S. are developing, they all want to be obal. You need to have that exposure to people of different cultures, different industries, and different backgrounds, which we can provide because of the diverse class that we have.

Whatmakes Cambridge unique from other European MBA programs?

I don't think the entrepreneurial culture is as strong in other areas of Europe as it is here. The area that we are in is kind of like Silicon Valley, where you have a huge research university but also a lot of spinouts from the university and a lot of startups. Many of our students go on to become entrepreneurs.

The quality of our students, the quality of our faculty, and the large number of practical projects in our curriculum also make us attractive.

Tell me more about the global consulting project that you mentioned, and please give some examples.

Most of the projects are done outside of the U.K. and they last about four to five weeks. The students work in groups of about four or five and they help real multinational companies and organizations solve real problems. For example in 2010 we had a group of students working with Toyota (TM.) in Los Angeles. Our business schoolorganizes most of the projects. Though if students have a certain area of interest, they can set up a project themselves. One group last year was very interested in e-commerce in China and set up a project.

As for the other projects done throughout the year, some examples would be helping a company think of how to market a new treatment for lymphoma, or how to market some sort of new application or new use for RFID technology.

How do you assist with job or internship placement?

We don't do placement for internships. Most times students find those themselves. When you have a two-year MBA, the internship is an integral part of the summer in between. Because ours is one year, students might choose to do an internship after the academic part of the program is finished. Others may use the summer to write a business plan, they might do a project with a member of faculty, or they might take another class at the university.

We do have a career services officeand there are employers that regularly reach out to us. Barclays () and Standard Chartered () are two banks that hire our students. Students have also gone on to work at the international units of Google (NasdaqGS: - ) and Amazon (NasdaqGS: - ).

What would you say is the most difficult part of the application process and what are the most common mistakes to avoid?

The interview might be the most difficult. Don't waffle on your answers. Be clear about what you want. Even if applicants are not sure about something they want, they should be clear about that as well. All our interviews are conducted by members of faculty who can see through B.S. quickly. We don't want someone who is saying what they think the interviewer wants to hear. We are looking for honest, direct answers.

What are your tips for writing the essays?

Just be truthful. For the essays, we look at an applicant'sanalytical ability. We ask what they think the main challenges are in their industry. We want to know what their recommendations are and what courses of action they suggest.

How important are GMAT scores to the application process?

The GMAT is an important prerequisite but doesn't guarantee admission. Once we see an applicant's GMAT is within a certain range, we then look at work experience, work references, and essays.

For work experience, we're looking at people that have a track record of excellence. We want to know if they work well in teams, if they work well in multinational, multicultural environments.

What makes an applicant stand out?

Someone who is intellectually strong, who has good work experience, strong leadership potential, and who has something unique that he or she would bring to the program. When I say unique, I mean there is something that the applicant feels passionate about, that they've invested a lot of timeand effort in. It could be something they've done in the workplace, something they've done in the community, or something they've done in sports. We want to know that there is something that they feel strongly about that they'd like to extend, or like to become really great at.

What do you look for in recommendation letters?

We ask for two references -- one from a supervisor and the other from a peer. The peer recommendation could come from a colleague or an ex-colleague. The best recommendations come from someone who knows the candidate well, who can write about how the candidate works in teams, and how the candidate has performed versus their peer group. We want to know if the candidate works well with people from different cultures.

What kind of financial aid is available and which students have the best shot at aid?

There are some bursary awards and some scholarships offered through the school. We don't have full-tuitionscholarships. We have some scholarships that cater to different groups. For example, there is one for North American women, there is one for people with an engineering background, there is another for people interested in the not-for-profit sector. There are also general scholarships that are need-based or merit-based.

Gbagbo lawsuit challenges W.African bloc's stance

Post n°9 pubblicato il 16 Febbraio 2011 da tvajienhryl

ABUJA (AFP) – Ivory Coast strongman Laurent Gbagbo has filed a lawsuit at a regional court challenging West African bloc ECOWAS' demand that he step down in favour of his rival, officials said on Monday.

The 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in December held two emergency summits which recognised Alassane Ouattara as Ivory Coast president and demanded Gbagbo quit office.

The bloc has also threatened force to remove him if he defies peaceful efforts to have him step down.

"We have filed an application before the ECOWAS court of justice against the authority of heads of states and governments of ECOWAS," said Mohamed Faye, a lawyer for Gbagbo. A hearing has been set for March 10.

A spokesman for Gbagbo's government confirmed the suit had been filed "in the name of the state of Ivory Coast."

"ECOWAS is an economic community which has decided to inject itself into the internal affairs of a state member, which is outside of its jurisdiction," Ahoua Don Mello told AFP.

Ivory Coast's electoral commission declared Ouattara the winner of the November ballot, a decision endorsed by the United Nations, but the country's constitutional court said Gbagbo had won.

Gbagbo has refused to step down despite global calls for him to do so.

Faye said Gbagbo was challenging ECOWAS leaders' "declaration because it violates the supremacy of the national constitutional court of Cote d'Ivoire, which is the judiciary organ in electoral matters."

"We are urging the court to hold that these pronouncements are illegal and if they are illegal, they are null and void, (and) that they should suspend any action in respect of these pronouncements," said Faye.

ECOWAS lawyer Obii Onuoha said she was unaware of the case and unprepared to respond.

A court registrar said he had served the ECOWAS commission with the court papers on February 7. ECOWAS spokesman Sunny Ugoh confirmed the commission had received the papers.

"My understanding is that we were told very late for us to respond in a coherent manner," said Ugoh.

"We are hoping with the adjournment, it will be an opportunity to do consultations and look at it properly so that we can react."

Judge Awa Nana Daboya adjourned the case to March 10, along with two other cases filed earlier by groups believed close to Gbagbo.

Three non-governmental organisations last month asked the same court to nullify the bloc's stance that Gbagbo must leave office.

In a separate case, a Nigerian lawyer, Godswill Mrakpor, also sought an order to restrain ECOWAS from using force to oust Gbagbo.
