Christie's expects Poussin to fetch up to $31 million

LONDON (Reuters) – Christie's expects a major work called "Ordination" by French master Nicolas Poussin to fetch 15-20 million pounds ($23-31 million) when it goes under the hammer in London on December 7.

The auctioneer will be hoping to repeat the spectacular prices for old master paintings fetched at the equivalent sale last year, when a Raphael drawing made a record $47.9 million and a Rembrandt painting sold for around $33 million.

Richard Knight, co-head of old masters and 19th century art at Christie's, called the painting "remarkable."

Ordination, painted in the 1630s, was one of the Seven Sacraments depicted by the artist for Cassiano dal Pozzo, a celebrated collector in Rome.

Of the set of seven, "Penance" was destroyed in a fire nearly 200 years ago and "Baptism" went to the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

The other five -- "Ordination," "Confirmation," "Eucharist," "Extreme Unction" and "Marriage" -- are in the possession of the Belvoir Estate, the estate of the Dukes of Rutland, and have been on loan to the National Gallery in London.

"The proceeds released from the sale of the painting will enable us to realize our core aims of securing the restoration and long-term preservation of Belvoir Castle and Estate," said a statement from the estate.

According to Christie's, the pope tried to intervene to prevent the series being sold out of Italy in the late 18th century.

But art dealer James Byres managed to arrange the sale of the pictures to Charles Manners, 4th Duke of Rutland, by having copies painted and substituted so that the originals could be smuggled out.

In 2007, the current, 11th Duke of Rutland was planning to sell all five of the family's Sacraments, estimated at that time to be worth a combined 100 million pounds, but withdrew them at the last moment, citing "family reasons."

Poussin painted another version of the Sacraments for a Parisian patron after being summoned to serve as court painter to King Louis XIII. That set is in the collection of the Dukes of Sutherland, and on loan to the National Gallery of Scotland.

White Sox walk away with 7-5 win over Red Sox

BOSTON – Gordon Beckham's bases-loaded walk with two outs pushed Chicago ahead in a four-run ninth inning that lifted the White Sox to their sixth straight win and an improbable 7-5 comeback victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.

The win completed a sweep of the three-game weekend series and came after Chicago trailed 5-3 entering the ninth inning and had two outs.

Victor Martinez had a two-run homer for the Red Sox, who lost both games of a day-night doubleheader by 3-1 scores on Saturday.

Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon (5-6) was one out away from the save, but Carlos Quentin's bloop RBI double to center cut the score to 5-4 before Ramon Castro tied it with a single.

Scott Linebrink (3-1) pitched one inning of relief for the win, and Matt Thornton got the final three outs for his sixth save.

Alex Rios walked leading off the ninth against Papelbon, stole second and scored when Quentin's bloop fell in front of diving centerfielder Ryan Kalish. Quentin was alert and went to second when it was left uncovered as the middle infielders had headed to the outfield. Castro's liner to the right-center gap also fell in front of a diving Kalish.

Papelbon walked Alexei Ramirez before Dustin Richardson relieved and walked Mark Teahen. Robert Manuel entered and issued bases-loaded walks to Beckham and Juan Pierre, making 7-5.

Manny Ramirez, who went 3 for 8 on Saturday when the White Sox swept the twinbill, was not in the starting lineup, but was hit by pitch from Papelbon on the right arm pinch hitting in the eighth inning. He left the field for a pinch runner, trotting off to a chorus of mostly boos.

Kalish broke up a possible inning-end double play on Jed Lowrie's grounder with a take-out slide on second baseman Beckham before Martinez put Boston ahead 4-3 with his homer over the Green Monster seats against starter Mark Buehrle.

Bill Hall's run-scoring ground out had made it 5-3 in the eighth.

The White Sox chased Josh Beckett in the seventh and scored two runs with only one infield hit to grab the 3-2 edge. Juan Pierre walked leading off and stole his major league leading 54th base. After Omar Vizquel popped out, Beckett fired widely into center for an error trying to pick off Pierre, who advanced to third. Alex Rios walked and Bard relieved, striking out Paul Konerko, before Rios stole second.

Quentin then hit a hard one-hop grounder off Bard's glove that caromed to the pitcher's right. He recovered in time, but short-hopped a throw to first baseman Mike Lowell that bounced away as both runners came home.

Beckett gave up three runs — one earned — on nine hits, walked two and struck out nine in 6 1-3 innings.

Buehrle gave up four runs, 10 hits, striking out six and walking one in seven innings.

The Red Sox took a 2-1 lead in the third when David Ortiz, just 3 for his last 25, lined a two-run double into the right-center field gap after Darnell McDonald and Jed Lowrie singled.

Alexei Ramirez's RBI single had given Chicago a 1-0 lead in the second.

NOTES: Boston SS Marco Scutaro was out of the lineup and will have an MRI on Tuesday on his right shoulder. ... Red Sox C Jason Varitek, on the DL since July 2 with a fractured right foot, is expected to start a rehab stint with Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday night. ... A male fan was taken from the stands by stretcher in the fourth inning. No further information was available. ... Rios stole three bases, giving him 32 and tying his career high from 2008 when was with Toronto.

Japanese-Argentine tango champs speak universal language

Post n°1 pubblicato il 05 Settembre 2010 da tvajienhryl

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) – Chizuko Kuwamoto and Diego Ortega can barely understand each other, but no words can bring them closer than the sultry language of the tango, a shared passion that got them top prize in the 2010 Mundial de Tango.

"She speaks very little Spanish. I speak very little Japanese. And we communicate by touch, sharing our feelings when we dance," 21-year-old Argentine Ortega told reporters after Tuesday's final competition.

Kuwamoto, 42, hails from Japan, where the tango has conquered many hearts in the past half century. She lives in Tokyo, where she learned musical theater and six years ago fell in love with the exacting dance born on the banks of the Rio de la Plata.

"Feel, feel, feel... no thinking," an emotional Kuwamoto explained the secret of her success after she and Ortega won the Scenery section taking first place in the tango championship held in Buenos Aires Luna Park amusement park this year.

In full tango gear -- dark-gray suit, ivory tie over white shirt and a handkerchief sticking out of the jacket chest pocket -- Ortega embodies the very essence of the 'tanguero' of the early 20th century, when the dance was most popular.

But the young man from the farming and fishing town of Colon, on the Parana River north of Buenos Aires, makes one concession to the 21st century: he wears a tiny ear ring that would have caused outrage among tango purists only 50 years ago.

"We both feel it (the tango) beyond our gaze... we feel it in the contact of our partner. It was... you know, a very moving experience," said Ortega, his hair impeccably slicked down in true tango style.

His composure was jarred somewhat late Tuesday when he heard Mundial de Tango host, Panamanian singer-composer-actor Ruben Blades announce: "and the winners of the Tango Scenery are..."

"It's impossible to explain what you feel when you hear your name, 'Diego... world champion... It's unbelievable! It's totally incredible," Ortega said.

Moments earlier, Kuwamoto held the audience spellbound in her tight, pearl blue dress with its mandatory deep side slit made so popular in the "milongas," the tango dance halls that crowded the red light districts and seedy dockside areas of Buenos Aires and other towns along the Rio de la Plata 100 years ago.

"To tell the truth, this year the level of competition was very good. Anybody could have won. But at the bottom of our heart, we felt we could make it all the way," said Ortega, who also lives in Tokyo but is not romantically involved with Kuwamoto.

Kuwamoto and Ortega left behind nearly 200 couples in the Scenery competition in the Mundial de Tango 2010 that began August 13 and also included the Salon competition, the more less spectacular, more traditional tango dance step.

Twenty-two couples reached the finals, including three from Japan, five from Colombia and one each from South Korea, Chile and Venezuela.

Last year, Kuwamoto and Ortega ended in 13th place in the Mundial de Tango held in Tokyo. They represented the Japanese capital in that competition, but this year they decided they would represent Ortega's home town of Colon

The tango in 2009 was declared part of the world's cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
