PM should attend royal wedding, poll shows

Post n°23 pubblicato il 03 Aprile 2011 da uacopymkjhe

A majority of Canadians say Prime Minister Stephen Harper should interrupt his election campaign to attend Prince William's wedding in London, according to poll results.

The Abacus Data poll showed 59 percent of Canadians want the conservative leader to attend Britain's biggest royal wedding for 30 years, even if it's just days before the May 2 election.

Prince William, second-in-line to the throne, marries Kate Middleton on April 29 at Westminster Abbey in front of 1,900 guests.

Harper and his wife Laureen had accepted the wedding invitation but later canceled after the collapse of his minority government last Friday.

Opposition parties backed a vote of no-confidence in Harper's government, triggering Canada's fourth election in seven years.

"Unfortunately, due to the election campaign Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen are unable to attend the royal wedding," Harper spokeswoman Nina Chiarelli said in a statement to AFP.

"Both the Prime Minister and Mrs. Harper send their best wishes to the future newlyweds," the statement added.

Sixty-four percent of women surveyed said Harper should attend the wedding, compared to 55 percent of men.

Among voters under 30 years old, 67 percent support Harper attending.

Seventy-two percent of fellow conservatives said Harper should witness the historic event in London.

The poll of 1,000 people was conducted between March 24-28 and has a margin of error of 3 percent.

Canada will be represented at the wedding by Governor General David Johnston, Queen Elizabeth II's representative in Canada, and his wife Sharon.

The royal wedding is Britain's biggest since William's parents Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana married in 1981.

William and Kate are to visit Canada from June 30 to July 8 on their first official trip outside Britain as newlyweds.

In budget battle, focus shifts on what to cut

Post n°22 pubblicato il 03 Aprile 2011 da uacopymkjhe

Though lawmakers may have tentatively agreed to the largest domestic spending reduction in U.S. history, they now must delve into the details to decide which programs to cut to meet their $33 billion target.

One day after Republican and Democratic leaders agreed on the outlines of a budget deal that could avert a looming government shutdown, they jockeyed on Thursday to protect areas where they fear it will do the most harm.

"What we cut is much more important than how we cut," Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said.

Staffers met shortly after Reid spoke to fill in the blanks on the agreement, which would settle a months-long battle over government spending and provide a final funding structure for the current fiscal year, which is already halfway over.

No matter the shape of the agreement, it would represent a big victory for Republicans, who have vowed to scale back the size of government. They will get further opportunities in the coming months as Congress faces a vote to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling and begins work on a budget for the next fiscal year, which starts on October 1.

The final size of the spending cut will depend on how it takes shape, as Republicans hope to include funding restrictions that would prevent President Barack Obama from pursuing some top priorities.

"There's no agreement on numbers" yet, House Speaker John Boehner said at a news conference.

A cut of $33 billion this fiscal year could mean severe pain for many domestic agencies. But it would do little to plug a budget deficit that is projected to hit $1.4 trillion this year.

The government has been operating on a temporary extension of last year's budget for the past six months, but that arrangement expires on April 8.

The Democratic-led Senate and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives must act before then to avert a government shutdown. Boehner may encounter resistance from newly elected lawmakers affiliated with the grassroots Tea Party movement who have shown little appetite for compromise.

Boehner said he is "not very interested" in a budget deal that would abandon conservative lawmakers.

TEA PARTY RALLY

The Tea Party group plan a rally on the Capitol grounds later in the day.

Republicans have pushed for sharp spending cuts to fulfill a campaign promise and begin closing budget deficits that have hovered around 10 percent of gross domestic product in recent years. Democrats say that cutting spending too suddenly could hurt the shaky economic recovery.

Republicans have passed a spending bill out of the House that would impose immediate cuts averaging 25 percent on nearly every aspect of the government's nonmilitary operations, from food-safety inspections to tax enforcement.

It also would prevent President Barack Obama from carrying out many of his top priorities by denying funds for healthcare reform and greenhouse-gas regulation.

Many of those funding restrictions are a nonstarter for Obama and his fellow Democrats, though some of the less restrictive measures will likely make it into the final bill.

Obama wants education, scientific research and other programs that lead to long-term economic growth to be spared.

On Thursday, Reid said that programs that help children, retirees and working families should be protected. He mentioned the Head Start preschool program, which would face a 28 percent cut under the Republican plan. Advocates say that would cut off aid to 200,000 children.

"There's only so much that the middle class in this country can take," Reid said on the Senate floor.

Democrats hope to steer some cuts toward programs like crop subsidies that normally lie beyond the reach of the annual budget process. Republicans suspect those cuts may amount to budget gimmickry that will not lead to actual savings.

Senate Republicans are expected to unveil a measure that would amend the U.S. Constitution to require a balanced federal budget each year. It is not expected to become law but could provide leverage in upcoming budget fights.

Miami stars shine in win but Chalmers hurt

Post n°21 pubblicato il 30 Marzo 2011 da uacopymkjhe

Two-time reigning NBA Player of the Year LeBron James scored 33 points and Dwyane Wade added 32 as the Miami Heat never trailed in defeating the Denver Nuggets 103-98.

But Miami's joy in winning on Saturday was tempered by the loss of starting point guard Mario Chalmers, who suffered a sprained right knee in the final seconds of the first quarter and was carried off the court.

Chalmers was guarding Denver's Ty Lawson when he fell backward, tried to recover from the stumble and his right knee struck the outstretched right leg of Lawson as the Nuggets playmaker made a jump shot.

Doctors will examine Chalmers again on Sunday but if he is unable to continue his two-month run of 27 starts in a row, it would be a major setback for Miami.

"You just want to know," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "The unknown is probably worse than anything. And it was like getting hit in the face. But we gathered and I was glad to see our maturity from that point on.

"We continued to grind the game. It wasn't necessarily a pretty game going down the stretch, but we made enough plays."

The Heat, who at 48-22 rank third in the Eastern Conference, are in the fight for playoff seeding and home-field advantage despite a season of nagging pains for nearly everyone at one time or another.

"Injuries have just figured out a way to bite us, seems at the wrong times," James said. "It happened again tonight. Hopefully it's not a huge thing."

Miami's Chris Bosh added 18 points and 11 rebounds while Mike Bibby, the likely replacement for Chalmers should he be out for any length of time, contributed 14 points.

"Mike fits right in. He's a guy who's great when he gets the ball," Wade said. "He's a veteran guy who's very smart. He's going to be big for us in the playoffs."

Injury setbacks slowed the blending of James and Bosh, highly touted Miami newcomers, with Wade and the Heat holdovers, but the journey has been the destination in many ways, Bosh said.

"A lot of ups and downs, but I think it's been good for this team," Bosh said. "After the smoke cleared, I think we're better."

Denver, which fell to 41-29, was led by 27 points from J.R. Smith and 23 by Italian playmaker Danilo Gallinari, with Lawson adding 16 points, Wilson Chandler scoring 12 and Brazil's Nene contributing 10.

The Nuggets twice pulled within four points of Miami in the fourth quarter but the Heat answered with a 10-0 run to seal the victory, James contributing a dunk and two free throws and Wade sinking a 3-pointer in the spurt.

"We were trying to search for our personality rather than knowing our personality," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "When you are playing a team and their best players are having great games, you are just searching for too many answers."

Minnesota Dentists Donate $2.5 Million in Free Care to Children in Need

Post n°20 pubblicato il 30 Marzo 2011 da uacopymkjhe

Broad Based Community Effort Treated 5,678 Children

MINNEAPOLIS, March 24, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Minnesota dentists, committed to making sure all children have the dental care they need and deserve, donated a record $2.5 million dollars of free care to Minnesota children in need in February. The comprehensive free dental care from Minnesota volunteer dentists was provided to 5,678 children in just two days during theoutreach.

More than 2,600 dental professionals volunteered their time to provide completely free dental care to children whose families cannot otherwise afford the care. While some clinics treated as many as 200 children, most clinics opened their doors to one or two dozen children. Many offices will continue to see the children for free for needed follow-up care.

"Minnesota dentists know there are barriers to care that keep many children from getting needed care," said Dr. Timothy Flor, president of the Minnesota Dental Association and a practicing dentist in Waseca. "This is an amazing broadbased effort to provide direct service on a volunteer basis, while we continue work at the legislature to deliver better care to families in need." Give Kids a Smile is sponsored by the Minnesota Dental Association.

Since its inception 9 years ago, the program has served 43,678 young children and the donated services top $13.5 million dollars in value. On average, each dentist in Minnesota donates $18,000 of care annually to their communities through a variety of charity care for children, seniors, the disabled and families facing economic hardships.

Tooth decay is the single most common chronic disease of childhood in the United States according to the federal statistics. All children are urged to see a dentist before their first birthday.

The Minnesota Dental Association is the voice of dentistry in Minnesota, representing 80% of practicing dentists. It is committed to the highest standards of oral health and access to care for all Minnesotans. You can learn more at .

Apple to unveil 'future of iOS and Mac OS' at WWDC 2011 on June 6

Applethat the 2011 World Wide Developers Conference is set to kick off on June 6 at San Franciscos Moscone West convention center. During the five-day conference, Apple says it will unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS.

In addition to those two big software announcements, Apple says the conference will debut new kinds of apps that developers can build using Apples advanced frameworks, as well as more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers.

Apple says it also plans to host its Design Awards, which honor iPad, iPhone and Mac OS apps that the Cupertino, California, company believes show the best in technical excellence, innovation and outstanding design.

News of an iOS reveal at WWDC followsout this weekend that the release of iOS 5 would be pushed back to the fall, with the WWDC update to iOS bringing cloud-based functionality to Apples mobile operating system. The fall iOS 5 rumor indicated that the next full version of iOS would accompany the release of the .

Based on the products debuted at past WWDCs, it may seem assured the company will also unveil the next generation iPhone at this years conference. But according to analyst Michael Gartner who spoke with , Apple will not debut the iPhone 5 at WWDC 2011, instead opting to focus on software. (The company has unveiled its latest iPhone iteration at each WWDC since the launch of the iPhone 3G in 2008.)

You get caught up in patterns, and it holds true, until it doesnt, Gartner tells The Loop. There is no reason for Apple to follow a predictable yearly pattern, and it keeps their competition off guard a little bit.

Like every other year, Apple has billed this years WWDC as a must-attend even for iOS app developers. But some devs have complained that the price to attend , which doesnt include the cost of hotel, airfare or other travel expenses is prohibitive.

According to Apple, this years WWDC activities include:

more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers on a wide range of technology-specific topics for developing, deploying and integrating the latest iOS and Mac OS technologies; over 1,000 Apple engineers providing developers with code-level assistance, insight into optimal development techniques, and guidance on how they can make the most of iOS and Mac OS technologies in their apps; the opportunity to connect with thousands of fellow iPad, iPhone and Mac developers from around the world; and Apple Design Awards which recognize iPad, iPhone and Mac apps that demonstrate technical excellence, innovation and outstanding design.
