She said the nerve problem, coupled with arthritis and feelings of inadequacy caused by her husband's frequent absences, caused her to turn to alcohol, which she increasingly combined with prescription drugs - a problem that haunted her into her through her 50s. In 1965, while fanaticizing about staging a disappearance to get attention from her family, Ford snapped back into reality and began seeing a psychiatrist.
By 1973, she and her husband were looking forward to his retirement after 25 years in Congress.
